(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoc position in Improved qubit coherence by materials modeling and process development

The reduction of quantum gate errors represents the most important problem in the development of quantum computers in any device technology. By this metric, superconducting qubits constitute a leading platform, with the best demonstrated two-qubit gate errors currently at the 0.1-0.2% level (Sung 2021, Ding 2023). Meaningful quantum computing requires that these errors be reduced to 0.01% in a scalable and reliable way across the multi-qubit chip.

These quantum gate errors are fundamentally limited by decoherence. Dielectric loss is the currently dominant decoherence mechanism in superconducting qubits (Burnett 2019). Other important contributions to decoherence originate from phonons and quasiparticles.

Here we propose a study of decoherence at the level of the physics of the constituent materials. We foresee that this effort will drastically improve our understanding of the microscopic mechanisms of decoherence and its effect on our devices, which will directly help improve the design and process development of our devices already during the project.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position on total scattering analysis in energy materials

The position is centered around characterizing novel materials for the transition to sustainable energy by total scattering methods. In the newly founded Multiscale Inorganic Energy Materials group within Chalmers’s Energy and Materials division, we synthesize materials with novel structural motifs on different length scales. These are then functionalized as catalysts towards water splitting or CO2 reduction. Many of these new materials feature local structures that deviate from the average structure probed by X-ray diffraction. Yet, it is the local structure that will dictate the reactivity of the catalytically active site. You will investigate the relationship of materials’ local structure to their functional properties via total scattering methods.

For this mission, we seek a motivated and skilled postdoc to contribute to groundbreaking research at the interface between solid state chemistry, materials science, and catalysis. You will also be involved in the synthesis of materials, either performing them yourself or in collaboration with the group’s PhD students. You will explore the variation in local structure caused by different synthetic pathways on new layered bulk and nano materials and study the relationship to their physical and catalytic properties. Catalytic properties will be studied in close collaboration with researchers from the Applied Chemistry division. The objective is to develop novel structural motifs that can enhance the conversion of renewable energy into valuable base chemicals, such as hydrogen from water electrolysis.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position on the synthesis of layered solid catalysts

The position is centered around creating and characterizing novel materials for the transition to a sustainable energy system. In the newly founded Multiscale Inorganic Energy Materials group within Chalmers’s Energy and Materials division, we aim to create materials with novel structural motifs on different length scales. These are then functionalized as catalysts towards water splitting or CO2 reduction. Within this project, you will create of novel layered materials where the A layer conducts electrons while the B layer features catalytically active edge sites for CO2 reduction. This requires the investigation of different synthesis pathways towards the target composition and elucidation of the materials structure. The structure will then be related to physical properties and catalytic performance.

For this mission, we seek a motivated and skilled postdoc to contribute to groundbreaking research at the interface between solid state chemistry, materials science, and heterogeneous catalysis. You will prepare materials by methods of solid state chemistry, characterize their structure and physical properties as well as functionalize them as catalysts towards CO2 reduction. Catalytic properties will be studied in close collaboration with researchers from the Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering division. The objective is to develop novel structural motifs that can enhance the conversion of renewable energy into valuable base chemicals, such methanol or formic acid.

(09) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position in spectroscopic characterization of nanocellulose for optoelectronics

This postdoctoral position is a full-time temporary employment opportunity for two years. The project is a part of the Wallenberg Wood Science Center (WWSC). The goal of the project is to explore and adjust the dielectric properties of nanocellulose.

Nanocellulose is used in various applications due to its impressive mechanical properties, thermal stability, and degradability. The high symmetry of nanocellulose results in the generation of high net value dipole moments of C-H and C-OH bonds.  This leads to high dielectric properties that, when interacting with electromagnetic waves impact light absorption, reflection, refraction, and transmission of the waves. The main tasks of the project will involve surface modification of nanocrystalline cellulose, creating films from it, and characterizing the dielectric properties using broadband dielectric spectroscopy and other relevant methods.

In the project nanocrystalline cellulose (CNC) will be used as the cellulose material. An initial part of the project is to characterize and surface functionalize the CNC. The surface modification is intended to promote uniform CNC aggregation during film formation. Since the alignment of crystals depends on how the film is prepared, different methodologies for film formation must be considered. The overall goal is to find correlations between dielectric properties, alignment of the crystals, and the surface properties of the crystallites in order to design films with tailor made dielectric properties. A key parameter in this process is to develop methodologies for creating interphases that provide the overall structure with flexibility, strength, and excellent optical properties such as transparency or uniform (tunable) structural color.

The Wallenberg Wood Science Center (WWSC) is a research center dedicated to achieving scientific excellence in the development of new materials from trees. The center aims to generate knowledge and build competence and expertise to drive innovative and sustainable value creation from forest resources. WWSC is a multidisciplinary collaborative effort between KTH, Chalmers, and Linköping University, made possible by a donation from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. The forest industry also supports WWSC through the national platform Treesearch.

(13) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Software Engineering – Human-AI Interaction

A key aspect of human-AI interaction, which is neglected when designing AI systems, is the human decision-makers. In essence, the human’s perception of the communication received from the AI is core to this interaction. AI systems that are developed to bridge the gap between AI and humans, where humans are the consumers of AI system predictions, are intended to improve the quality of decisions. However, humans often make less than optional decisions since they are distorted by their cognitive biases, thus AI systems can reinforce biases or improve the way humans think about a situation. Thus, we argue that it is natural to use the dual-process theory as a lens to understand human cognition when designing AI systems that are intended to augment human intelligence.

In this project we seek to augment human intelligence by not only develop effective explanation techniques, but also by identifying ways to increase humans cognitive motivation for engaging analytically with the explanations from an AI system when designing AI systems that are intended to augment human intelligence.
