(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc or Scientist in energy systems modelling
We are looking for a motivated and experienced candidate to develop strategies and methods to design and assess multi-energy systems from the building to the national+ scale. A particular focus lies on the modelling and optimization of energy systems and the characterization and assessment of traditional and emerging energy conversion and storage technologies. Challenges encompass – among others – urban multi-energy system design and flexibility integration, regional energy storage (electric, thermal and chemical), and the electrification of the heating and mobility sector along with the expansion of renewables as well as climate change mitigation. The candidate shall translate his/her research ideas to tackle these challenges, in close collaboration with our interdisciplinary team and external scientific and industry partners. The candidate will support our PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, publish in scientific journals, and participate in conferences.
Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher in electron microscopy of catalytic systems (a)
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a doctoral degree in materials science, physics, chemistry or a related discipline with experience in analytical (scanning) transmission electron microscopy and scripting (e.g. Python). Further, you feel comfortable communicating and collaborating with your team members in a multicultural environment. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: 30 month postdoc / scientist position on CH4 clumped isotope analysis by mid-IR laser spectroscopy
The project aims at the development and application of high-precision mid-IR laser spectroscopy for the analysis of the rare doubly substituted isotopic species 13CH3D / 12CH2D2 in methane. You will leverage on our ongoing work in preconcentration / isotope analysis of CH4 to perform cutting-edge studies of process-derived and ambient methane. These developments form part of the European metrology project “isoMET” that involves twelve research groups that join forces to improve CH4 source attribution by isotope analysis.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position on electrolytes for high-voltage lithium-ion batteries
The research project focuses on developing electrolytes for high-voltage lithium-ion batteries within an InnoSuisse project in collaboration with a Swiss industrial partner. Your tasks include electrolyte formulation, characterization, and assessment in lithium-ion batteries with a special focus on solid electrolyte interphase formation on anode and cathode. Our labs are fully equipped for battery fabrication and testing. State-of-the-art facilities include synthesis labs with fume hoods, gloveboxes, various synthesis reactors and furnaces, sputtering, evaporation, and atomic layer deposition facilities, X-ray diffractometers, Raman and FTIR spectrometers, electrochemical characterization including impedance spectroscopy, mass spectrometers, gas and liquid chromatographers, thermogravimetric analyzer, various equipment for the characterization of electrolytes, etc. Access to advanced electron microscopy and X-ray facilities is also available.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doc in 3D printing of polymers
to develop new polymeric resins for both SLA and DLP 3D printing. Your responsibilities will involve developing new transparent and non-transparent polymeric formulas with long shelf life, and for improved mechanical properties including tensile strength and elongation at failure. In addition, the processing will need to be optimized to 3D print both high specification parts with micro features as well as large structures and components. You will also have hands on experience to characterize the properties of the resins, and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the printed components. For this demanding project we are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a Ph.D. in materials science, polymer science or chemistry. Experience in both polymer processing and characterization is essential. Experience in 3D printing of ceramics maybe of advantage. The candidate must have a proven track record in publishing of high quality peer reviewed articles as a first author. The candidate needs to be fluent in English (oral and written) and preferably has a basic knowledge of German.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Scientist or a PostDoc for game development (80-100%)
The Engage project, led by the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (EAWAG), aims to create a dialogue platform for a science-based discussion of complex trade-offs related to pressing societal problems amongst relevant stakeholders. Over the period of 2023 to 2025, a consortium of Swiss research institutes will develop different tools and structures to facilitate this dialogue. The open position will contribute by developing and applying a simulation game as a means of interactive stakeholder engagement in the areas of climate change, energy and biodiversity.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position on modelling the implications from a transition to net-zero on air quality
The Swiss Center of Excellence on Net-Zero Emissions (SCENE) is a joint initiative of the four research institutions Empa, PSI, WSL and EAWAG of the ETH domain, together with partners at ETH Zurich and EPFL. The initiative addresses the challenges of the transition to a net-zero society in six strategic areas, including aspects of avoiding, removing, monitoring, and assessing GHG emissions. Within this initiative, we will study the impact of a transition to net-zero on air quality levels in Europe and Switzerland using the atmospheric chemistry and transport model ICON-ART. We will develop scenarios and emission inputs for the years 2030 and 2050, consistent with Switzerland’s energy strategy and European projections. We will then study the corresponding impacts on air quality with a focus on ozone and reactive nitrogen compounds, which are expected to change significantly in response to the electrification of mobility and other mitigation measures.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: PostDoc Position in the field of thermoplastic binder development for hardmetal materials
For an industrial project, funded by a swiss agency, we are looking for a highly motivated PostDoc with a strong background in thermoplastic processing of metals, ceramics or hardmetal materials. The project focus is on the development of a special thermoplastic binder for hardmetal shaping process. In the project we focus on large complex structures. The compounding and the processing will be transferred to the industrial partner.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc (Civil engineer with in-depth knowledge of timber structures)
to work mostly on a case study of a heavy-duty road bridge, namely on measures to reduce CO2 emissions, but also on other research projects. Starting date of the position is upon agreement but preferably early in 2023.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a strong experimental background in materials chemistry, solid state physics or nanoscience who wants to pursue cutting-edge research at a world-class level. Within a large-scale project, we aim at developing carbon-based quantum materials for next-generation quantum technologies, with a strong focus on atomically precise graphene nanoribbons (GNRs). Within this project, you will work on the development of gate-tunable graphene nanoribbon devices and their characterization by Raman spectroscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning probe microscopy and spectroscopy.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Scientist or PostDoc for prospective and systemic sustainability assessment of wood and wood-based components
This research is part of a large interdisciplinary project within the ETH domain with the main goal to analyze the potential of Swiss woody biomass to contribute to reaching Net-Zero by comparing the effect of different wood use and substitution scenarios.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in data-driven control of building and district energy systems
You will lead a funded project on “Scalable deep reinforcement learning algorithms for energy and building climate control ” where learning based control as well as semantic data structures are key topics. The Empa Laboratory of Cellulose & Wood Materials invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship position on extraction and engineering of sustainable proteins from fungi. Together with our team of experienced scientists, postdocs and PhD students, you will contribute to the development of the next generation of sustainable biocomposite materials. This project bridges our activities in the fields of nanocellulose and applied fungal biotechnology. The goal of the project is to optimize and control the extraction of proteins from fungi and to understand the protein conformation and functionality for tailored biomaterial properties. We envision that the generated knowledge may be useful for materials with bioplastics, air/water filtration and biomedical applications.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: 3 – 4 year postdoc / scientist position on N2O emissions and isotopic fingerprints from agricultural soils
The project aims at the validation and implementation of cavity ring-down spectroscopy to determine N2O emissions and isotopic fingerprints from agricultural soils. Your activities will build on our previous and ongoing achievements in N2O isotope analysis to achieve outstanding accuracy, automation and high sample throughput. You will perform N2O flux and isotope observations at agricultural sites to validate biogeochemical soil models and upscale observations that can then be compared to national inventories. Your developments are key contributions to the European metrology project “quantiAGREMI” and the Horizon Europe project “PARIS”. Together with leading scientists you will create new methodologies for the attribution and quantification of emission processes.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Scientist or Postdoc position on sustainable electronic materials
Together with our team of experienced scientists and industry partners, you will develop a new generation of green and sustainable fillers and binder materials enabling a new generation of ecological printed circuit boards (eco PCBs). This project bridges our activities in the fields of biopolymers, printed electronics and composite processing and will be carried out in a framework of a large EU financed project with partners in e.g. Sweden, Austria and the Netherlands. Combining fundamental and applied science, the goal is to develop highly functional and commercially relevant material solutions. We envision that the generated knowledge will advance the use of sustainable materials for electronics in general and lead to developments that allow for the demonstration of the potential to integrate eco PCBs in real applications thereby contributing to a future green and circular electronics.
