(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position for blood-based detection of Alzheimer’s Disease using nanoscale imaging and chemical spectroscopy
Presymptomatic blood-based diagnosis is critical for slowing Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Aggregated forms of amyloid beta (Aβ) and tau proteins are well known biomarkers in AD diagnosis. Our goal is to resolve, identify and classify these pathological proteins in blood from patients at various stages of decline in memory and cognition using label-free nanoscale imaging and chemical spectroscopy. Blood from age-matched healthy controls will also be analysed. The classified Aβ and tau protein aggregates ranging from single oligomers, protofibrils to mature fibrils in blood will be correlated in a patient-specific manner with clinical results to build a predictive model for identifying people at risk of developing AD and evaluating treatment efficiency.
Postdoc summary/title: Postdoc in Borehole Thermal Energy Storage Control
You will join the funded GOES (1) project on “Geothermal based Optimized Energy Systems” where model and controller synthesis of a campus energy system with integrated borehole thermal energy storage (BTES) field, as well as abstraction of models/controllers to various settings, are key topics. This project is embedded in a larger international project under GEOTHERMICA and JPP Smart Energy (2).
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position on Regional inverse modelling of non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions and data management
The European Commission has funded three HORIZON projects aiming at the estimation of national greenhouse gas emissions through the use of atmospheric observations and inverse modelling. The project PARIS (https://horizoneurope-paris.eu/), which brings together a high-level consortium of 17 European partner organizations under the lead of the University of Utrecht, focuses on the interface between bottom-up and top-down approaches and aims to strengthen the collaboration between atmospheric scientists and national inventory teams for the evaluation and development of national inventories. As a key partner of PARIS contributing to the development of national scale solutions, we are looking for a highly motivated postdoc experienced in atmospheric transport and inverse modelling.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Scientist or Postdoc in control engineering
in the field of modeling and control of combustion-based energy converters for renewable fuels. Since energy converters have to react on fuels and new fuels give challenges to the system such as air demand, load control and combustion the systems have to become as flexible as possible. The focus of the projects is the flexibilization and the optimal control of such systems.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Scientist or Postdoc position on alternative leather materials
Together with our team of experienced scientists and industry partners, you will synthetize polymers from biorefinery building blocks and prepare composites and fibers for the textile industry. This project brings together a new generation of green and sustainable fillers and polymers for the preparation of leather alternatives with higher durability and mechanical properties than the commercially available synthetic leathers. The project is financed by Innosuisse and brings together Empa, a start-up and a large Swiss Industrial textile company. Combining fundamental and applied science, the goal is to develop high functional and commercially relevant material solutions. We envisage that the generated knowledge will advance the use of sustainable resources for the production of leather alternatives. We also foresee that the developments will demonstrate the potential to reduce carbon emission and water consumption compared to “natural leather” production and contribute to substitute the fossil-based polymer composites with bio-based sustainable alternatives.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in building energy systems control
You will join a funded project on “dynamic grid tariffs for demand side management and electrical grid support” where building control synthesis, network security and evaluation of different dynamic tariffs to optimally distribute the demand side flexibility among several stakeholders are key topics. You will develop control methods and pipelines for several archetypical building and districts, as well as specific demonstration buildings for real life validation. You will have the freedom to develop and execute your research ideas in close collaboration with our team and our external scientific and industry partners.

We are looking for a highly motivated postdoc with a strong experimental background in materials and chemistry to develop high-efficiency flexible all-perovskite tandem solar cells and mini-modules using slot-die coating. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc or Scientist on Human-centred design of climate neutral buildings
We are looking for a motivated and experienced candidate to develop strategies and methods to make buildings climate neutral while balancing personal well-being. A particular focus lies on the modelling of buildings, its materials, occupant behaviour and the energy systems with the goal to identify suitable climate-neutral transformation measures for buildings. The candidate will work in close collaboration with an interdisciplinary research team and industrial partners to translate his/her research ideas into practice. The candidate will support our PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, publish in scientific journals, and participate in national and international conferences.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: PostDoc position in data science for open and reproducible materials research
This project will use data from simulations and experiments to design, develop, stress test, and benchmark ORD practices that support and enable combined experimental and computational research in materials science. Our developments will enable general interoperability between experimental Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELN), Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), and Workflow Management System software for managing reusable simulation workflows (WFMS). We will use openBIS as ELN-LIMS and AiiDA as WFMS. Through practical examples, we will show how their implementation can enable novel approaches to conducting research, understanding the results, and ultimately accelerating the discovery and characterization of materials.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position in Advanced Laser Optics
The laboratory is looking for a highly creative postdoctoral candidate to carry out research in the field of laser development and implementation within an EU/SBFI granted project. You will be involved in the development of a plasma laser in the X-ray to be utilized as a tabletop alternative to beamlines. Magnetic multilayer systems with interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction offer an additional degree of freedom for tuning the domain wall energy and stabilizing nanoscale maze domains and skyrmions. For our DACH project entitled “Binary information represented by chiral spin textures” we are looking for a Postdoctoral researcher focusing on the development of magnetic multilayer systems and fabrication of devices supporting 3D magnetic structures that can serve as information carriers.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: a Scientist or a PostDoc (Project ORDZeroPM)
OpenChemUses belongs to the Open Research Data initiative, with the aim to enable and engage the wide scientific and regulatory communities to work towards open FAIR data on the uses of chemicals and materials by developing and disseminating a “big-data” toolbox that address both existing and future use reporting. The ZeroPM project will establish an evidence-based multilevel framework to guide policy, technological innovation, and market incentives to minimize use, emissions and pollution of persistent and mobile substances to the environment. The overall goal of the work performed at Empa is to build databases of chemicals and materials on the global market towards better understanding of their uses and fate in the technosphere. The project implementation will be achieved in close collaboration with the project partners, including IBM Research Europe, the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute and the University of Luxembourg.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher in electron microscopy of catalytic systems (a)
Funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, the primary goal of this project is to investigate real-world catalytic systems by analytical transmission electron microscopy. You will be responsible for innovative, experimental studies, including in-situ investigations of catalytic materials, comprising development and implementation of new experimental approaches and/or methods for data analysis. You will also coordinate collaborations with internal and external research groups. Simulations can be part of the research work.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: 30 month postdoc / scientist position on CH4 clumped isotope analysis by mid-IR laser spectroscopy
The project aims at the development and application of high-precision mid-IR laser spectroscopy for the analysis of the rare doubly substituted isotopic species 13CH3D / 12CH2D2 in methane. You will leverage on our ongoing work in preconcentration / isotope analysis of CH4 to perform cutting-edge studies of process-derived and ambient methane. These developments form part of the European metrology project “isoMET” that involves twelve research groups that join forces to improve CH4 source attribution by isotope analysis.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position on electrolytes for high-voltage lithium-ion batteries
The research project focuses on developing electrolytes for high-voltage lithium-ion batteries within an InnoSuisse project in collaboration with a Swiss industrial partner. Your tasks include electrolyte formulation, characterization, and assessment in lithium-ion batteries with a special focus on solid electrolyte interphase formation on anode and cathode. Our labs are fully equipped for battery fabrication and testing. State-of-the-art facilities include synthesis labs with fume hoods, gloveboxes, various synthesis reactors and furnaces, sputtering, evaporation, and atomic layer deposition facilities, X-ray diffractometers, Raman and FTIR spectrometers, electrochemical characterization including impedance spectroscopy, mass spectrometers, gas and liquid chromatographers, thermogravimetric analyzer, various equipment for the characterization of electrolytes, etc. Access to advanced electron microscopy and X-ray facilities is also available.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position on liquid electrolytes for high-voltage lithium-ion batteries
Your task is to develop high-voltage electrolytes for next-generation lithium-ion batteries based on silicon-graphite anodes and high-voltage spinel cathodes. A state-of-the-art automated electrolyte mixing and cell assembly system will assist you in the development process. Interface/interphase studies using techniques such as impedance spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy will be an important aspect of your work to understand how selected electrolyte components interact with the electrodes to improve cycling stability.
