(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoctoral position – Microfluidic-based Sample Introduction for Analysis of Single Cells and Single Nano/Micro Materials using ICP-TOFMS

The two year project will focus on the development of an online cell sorting sample introduction system for quantitative element analysis of single cells using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The major goal is the development and characterization of an novel approach combining online cell sorting at high throughput and a unique downwards pointing inductively coupled time of flight plasma mass spectrometer.

The researcher will have access to State of the Art ICP and unique ICP-TOF mass spectrometers. Furthermore, collaboration with colleagues from different Departments at ETH will provide access to cell cultures and cell cultivation facilities to prepare proof-of-concept samples for testing the instrument development progress.

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoc in Satellite Gravimetry

The selected candidate will be responsible for shaping the gravity-related research conducted at the Chair of Space Geodesy and building a compelling line of research that incorporates aspects of machine learning. Ideally, the position will concentrate on the application of deep learning to satellite gravimetry data from the GRACE and GRACE-FO missions to address key issues such as the detection of hydroclimatic extreme events, enhancing the spatial and/or temporal resolution of GRACE(-FO) products, reconstructing past and/or predicting future hydrological conditions, separation of water storage components, or fusing gravity measurements with GNSS, InSAR, satellite altimetry, or hydrological/environmental models. A focus will be on the development of machine learning-based strategies and algorithms for such purposes, utilizing concepts from probabilistic, explainable or physics-informed machine learning. In this framework, the postdoc will conduct original research, with the specific topic being flexible and ideally benefitting from the applicant’s previous experience. While the focus of the position is on research, the postdoc will also be involved in teaching activities related to physical geodesy, the supervision of student works and the guidance of doctoral students.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Position in Climate Dynamics

The ideal candidate has a strong background in physics, math, and/or statistics, some specialized knowledge in one or more components of the coupled climate system (especially the atmosphere and/or ocean), and an intellectual curiosity about the many interdisciplinary aspects of climate science.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral or Senior Researcher in Innovation and Diffusion of Carbon Dioxide Removal

You are expected to conduct research toward a net-zero economy, focusing on the innovation, scale-up, and diffusion of carbon dioxide removal (CDR). While your work includes understanding technological advancements, your research should address broader organizational, institutional, or technological questions to comprehensively tackle climate challenges, for example:

  • How can we build innovation ecosystems that facilitate the development of CDR technologies?
  • Which policy designs enhance – or hinder – the adoption of CDR?
  • What are effective governance structures for carbon markets to support CDR?
  • How can entrepreneurship & finance contribute to scaling CDR technologies?
  • Which role could CDR play in companies’ climate strategies?

Your profile fits particularly well with our ongoing research if you have worked on novel CDR methods with a technology aspect such as direct air carbon capture and storage (DACCS) or bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS).

Your work is scientifically rigorous and at the same time relevant to industry and policymakers. An integral part of your work consists of advising PhD and master students. By supporting some of the group’s diverse teaching activities, you are directly contributing to SusTec’s innovative approach to sustainability and helping bridge research and learning. Further, you will have the opportunity to contribute to shaping the group’s strategy, involve yourself in crafting funding proposals and gain experience in leading research projects and teams.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Position in Machine Learning for Chemical Reaction Prediction

We are seeking a highly motivated and technically skilled candidate with the following qualifications:

  • A PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, computational science, physics, or related fields, or the expectation of obtaining such a degree before Q1 2025.
  • Fluency in Python and proficiency with cheminformatics tools such as RDKit and OpenBabel.
  • Experience in designing and developing deep learning models in PyTorch, demonstrated through at least one public GitHub repository and related first author publication.
  • A strong understanding of chemical reactions and synthesis.
  • Familiarity with chemical databases and molecular modeling.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position: Electrochemical Cooling and Heating

The project adopts a comprehensive experimental perspective on the early-stage development of electrochemical technologies in the sustainable heating and cooling industry. In your work, you are expected to lead the experimental activities to assess the behavior of electrochemical heating or cooling reaction pairs, previously identified as promising candidates, by:

  • testing half-reactions in isolation, through various techniques (e.g., linear sweep voltammetry, cyclic voltammetry, and chronoamperometry), aiming at quantifying the voltage-current relations, reversibility and selectivity of the reactions.
  • Testing full reactions in prototype electrochemical cooling and heating cells.

You are also expected to lead the modeling activities needed to gain insight into the studied systems and steer their design through, e.g., the development of 1D models able to predict the voltage-current characteristics measured by cyclic voltammetry.

The work will deepen your understanding of the potential of electrochemical cooling and heating technologies. You work on fundamentals and their translation into practice. Collaboration with partners from industry and academia will be crucial for success.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Post-Doctoral Researcher – Evaluating Global Food Systems Sustainability

We are looking for a candidate who is highly motivated to work in this project within a team that aims to assess the current status and future scenarios of global food system sustainability through nutrition, environmental, economic, and social dimensions.

The candidate should have excellent academic qualifications, writing skills, strong self-motivation and the ability to work in fast-paced interdisciplinary environment. Strong statistical, computer programming, and big data analysis skills are necessary qualifications for the position. Experience in quantitative sustainability assessment (e.g., life cycle assessment) and mathematical modelling of environmental systems will be considered a plus.

The successful candidate must have a Master and Dr./Ph.D. degree (or equivalent) in Sustainability Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Data Sciences, Bioscience Engineering or a closely-related area.

A three-page research proposal outlining the current issues, important literature, and possible approaches to tackle food sustainability challenges is required to consider the application.

(10) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate – Neutrino Physics

The selected candidates are expected to significantly contribute to the physics analysis at the upgraded T2K near detector (ND280) using deep learning methods that the group is currently developing. They will also be involved in the simulation and performance studies of the Hyper-K magnetised near detector as well as detector R&D, studying the impact of future possible upgrades. In addition, they will have the opportunity to be involved in the Hyper-K experiment by also joining the upcoming activities at CERN related to the assembly and testing of the underwater vessel equipment. These roles necessitate a readiness for international travel and the flexibility to attend meetings outside of regular working hours, including online engagements.

The selected candidate will also engage in weekly teaching activities within the bachelor’s and master’s programs at ETH Zurich.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc or Senior Researcher Position in hydromechanical modeling and hazard/risk analysis for CO2 storage

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with a strong interest in numerical modeling of coupled fluid flow and geomechanics: 

  1. A PhD in Geophysics, Geology, Physics, Engineering, Statistics, or equivalent.
  2. A proven record of excellence and innovation in a relevant domain of geomechanics and/or fluid flow in fractured and porous media, and the interest to work in a highly collaborative and team-oriented environment. 
  3. Experience with numerical modeling and high-level programming (e.g. Fortran/C++). 
  4. Abilities in use of data processing software such as Matlab or Python are required.
  5. Basic understanding of hazard and risk for CO2 storage.
  6. The researcher will be required to work in and coordinate the activities of a small, interactive team.
