We are looking for an outstanding, post-doctoral researcher with proven expertise and practical experience in biomaterials and bioprinting, with associated relevant experience including cell culture, organ-chip models, tissue engineering, and musculoskeletal biology. The PDRA will plan and conduct experiments, generate high-quality data, prepare publications, make presentations and help supervise associated PhD students. 

The successful candidates will join large, supportive research teams led by Profs Knight, Screen and Connelly all working collaboratively at Queen Mary. This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the largest and most successful multidisciplinary centres in this rapidly expanding area of organ-on-a-chip technology.

A Postdoctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) is sought to join the musculoskeletal organ-chip research team within Queen Mary’s Centre for Predictive in vitro Models.

This 23-month post is part of the Precision Musculoskeletal Care theme at the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre. The PDRA will help drive our activity in developing, validating, and testing a suit of new musculoskeletal organ-chip models. These include different combinations of tissues such as synovium, cartilage, bone, meniscus, blood vessels and fat, as well as conditions such as inflammation, osteoarthritis and fibrosis. The post allows for some flexibility in the specific models and related research, but with a strong emphasis on supporting further grant applications in this field.

This post is part of a dynamic collaboration between the Centre for Trauma Sciences and the Centre for Translational Bioinformatics. The Centre for Trauma Sciences, is a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, scientists, nurses and support staff, delivering a programme of research relating to traumatic injury, haemostatic resuscitation and optimisation of patient outcomes. The Centre for Translational Bioinformatics is a team of computational biologists, software engineers and data scientists located within the Digital Environment Research Institute (https://www.qmul.ac.uk/deri/) at Queen Mary University of London. Our teams also partner with a national network of researchers, clinician researchers and industry to translate biomedical data into the clinic.

The ATLAS L1Calo/Global upgrade project is primarily a firmware development based on a common multipurpose hardware module. It requires a lot of software development in a wide range of areas. You will join the ATLAS group in the Particle Physics Research Centre, working within our L1Calo team, making leading contributions to the ATLAS calorimeter trigger upgrade for the high-luminosity LHC. You will provide support to our PhD students and contribute to the broader activities of the group and the school.

Barocaloric solid-state cooling is a promising new technology that has potential to dramatically reduce the carbon cost of cooling and refrigeration. In an EPSRC-funded collaboration, Dr Anthony Phillips (School of Physical and Chemical Sciences), Dr Helen Walker (ISIS Neutron and Muon Source) and Dr Keith Butler (University College London) are assembling a team to study the atomistic origin of barocaloric materials’ thermodynamic properties, and hence to design new materials with properties that rival those of vapour-liquid refrigerants. We are looking for a researcher to develop, synthesise and characterise materials for this project.

This is an opportunity to work as part of the team and project “Shock transients in the inner heliosphere during maximum solar activity” funded by a Royal Society URF Renewal led by Dr Heli Hietala. The postdoc project involves primarily simulations informed by observations, related data analysis and theory/models, comparing various aspects of shock particle acceleration and meso-scale structures in different regions of space. The key data comes from recent missions (SolarOrbiter, ParkerSolarProbe, BepiColombo) and databases of MagnetosphericMultiScale and Messenger.

This is an opportunity to work as part of the team and project “Accelerating charged particles in space” funded by a Royal Society URF led by Dr Heli Hietala. The postdoc project involves carrying out research to evaluate the particle detector technologies currently developed at QMUL and their suitability for incorporation in space-borne applications, such as CubeSats. The project involves high level of collaboration with both the QMUL Space Plasma Group and the QMUL Detector Development Group.

A postdoctoral researcher is being recruited to work with Dr Andrew Winter, as an observational astronomer in a primarily theory-oriented group. The high-level goal is to connect protoplanetary disc properties as inferred by multi-wavelength observations to larger scale environmental conditions in the surrounding interstellar medium. As such, the successful candidate will work on both new and archival data, as well as working towards future observing proposals and strategies. Within this framework, the successful candidate will have flexibility and freedom to tailor the project to their own research interests.

This new post will be at the forefront of interdisciplinary medical research contributing to the design-led development and evaluation of patient-centred risk-communication tools for medicine use before and during pregnancy. This postholder would work primarily on a recently funded programme of work to develop a novel approach to understanding and communicating the Safety of Medicines in Pregnancy. Current risk-communication materials in maternity care are often text-heavy, numerically dense, and disconnected from the lived experiences of women and families. Building on prior epidemiological and clinical work, this post will support a design-led, experience-prototyping approach to co-design communication tools that help women, their families, and clinicians navigate complex benefit–risk decisions during the pre-conception, antenatal, and post-partum periods.

The post-holder will undertake original, practice-based design research, drawing on participatory and co-design methods, as well as qualitative approaches including semi-structured interviews with women, families, and clinicians. These interviews will inform the design process and deepen understanding of the everyday contexts and sociomaterial practices that shape decision-making around medicine use in pregnancy. The research will be informed by theoretical perspectives such as Science and Technology Studies (STS), including concepts such as the co-production of knowledge, more-than-human entanglements (e.g. mother, fetus, medicines, and data), and the situated nature of risk communication in healthcare.

The project “An Erlangen Programme for AI” (funded by the UKRI), will broadly involve applying advanced mathematical techniques for understanding training in neural networks, with potential applications in audio and music processing.

Standard neural network training practices largely follow an open-loop paradigm, where the evolving state of the model typically does not influence the training dynamics. This project seeks to establish a mathematical framework for closing this loop by quantitatively measuring and analysing the evolution of neural networks during training. We will explore and compare two distinct mathematical approaches to network metrology: Spectral analysis approach – based on network layer decomposition and spectral measures on singular values to mathematically characterise the internal dynamics of neural networks. Topological approach – based on metrics derived from topological data analysis to capture qualitative structural changes in the neural network configuration.

Both methodologies represent substantial advancements in the theoretical understanding of neural network dynamics and highlight different mathematical aspects of network “trainedness”. By rigorously comparing these approaches in terms of computational complexity, implementability, effectiveness, and interpretability, this project aims to establish solid mathematical criteria to inform novel design and architectural choices for neural networks.

We are recruiting an enthusiastic postdoctoral research associate to conduct a scientific programme of work focussed on pain mechanisms in epidermolysis bullosa, under the supervision of Professor Shafaq Sikandar, Dr Matthew Caley and Dr Emanuel Rognoni. The candidate will be based at the William Harvey Research Institute. The role will involve extensive laboratory investigations using neurophysiological and neuro-immune profiling of the impaired skin barrier and maladaptive neuronal responses underlying pain in epidermolysis bullosa.

Applicants are invited to apply for a 12-month full-time BHF-funded post-doctoral position to join Dr Manikandan Subramanian’s team investigating the macrophage mediated clearance of dead cells and extracellular DNA in the context of inflammation resolution and atherosclerosis progression.

The position is at the Centre for Biochemical Pharmacology which brings together a group of leading clinical and non-clinical scientists researching the cellular and molecular basis of inflammation, rheumatic, and cardiovascular diseases. The Centre is based within the picturesque Charterhouse Square Campus in the  City of London and within the world-renowned William Harvey Research Institute at Barts and The London School of Medicine, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL).

The appointed person will undertake research investigations under the supervision of Dr Subramanian and provide research as well as administrative support in order to realise the objectives and development of the research programme. The particular emphasis of the project will be to examine the interaction between atherosclerotic plaque macrophages and neutrophil extracellular traps and how it impacts cellular function and disease progression.
