(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoctoral Researcher on Causal Representation Learning (2 years)

The next decade for Representation Learning will find Causality, Interactivity, and Embodiment in the centre, given also the impressive progress in 3D simulated. However, our causal representations are not yet mature enough to compete with the likes of self-supervised learning, which however, rely purely on correlations. What is more, our causal representations are not yet mature to account for all possible fine-grained interventions and interactions that a 3D World would require. Are you passionate about bleeding edge research on Causal Representation Learning and with a knack towards Computer Vision and Embodied AI applications? Then this is the position for you! We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in Causal Representation Learning, Causality or Machine Learning to join a team of 15+ researchers (1+1 years contract); a team that is connected with the ELLIS Network of Excellence in AI; a team with consistent and strong presence in the top Machine Learning, as well as Computer Vision conferences and journals.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc on In-band Network-wide Telemetry in 6G Networks

Deep network programmability, that is the ability to program the network fabric both vertically (control and data plane) and horizontally (end to end), is expected to characterize the new generation of mobile networks (6G) towards supporting extreme performance requirements and service-specific operations. To this end, enriching next-generation mobile networks with data plane programming capabilities can bring significant benefits with regards to network monitoring and telemetry analysis. In-band network telemetry (INT) can help correlate observed application/network performance degradation with network bottlenecks, short-lived congestion events, routing misconfigurations, or highly utilized network nodes and links. The objective of the post-doc appointment is to investigate in-band network telemetry (INT) solutions for evolving 6G systems with attention to 6G-optical integration. In this context, INT should support the collection of accurate end-to-end network state and QoS/QoE parameters, to support (proactive) network adaptation and near real time control.  Thus, new approaches and technologies will be developed and demonstrated for collecting, intelligently aggregating (e.g., using including autoencoders and other ML-based techniques) and processing monitoring information originated by user equipment and terminals, programmable HW-accelerated network elements, edge computing resources, and applications. Envisioned solutions should provide high monitoring accuracy along with low and fixed transmission overhead and ensure scalability/performance.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Sociology

The Department of Sociology is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for the project “The Return of the Medici? The Global Rise of Private Museums for Contemporary Art”, which is funded by the Dutch Science Foundation (NWO) and led by Professor Olav Velthuis. The researcher will be part of programme group Cultural Sociology of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR),  and will as such be able to participate in activities of this research institute (e.g. research presentations, conferences, trainings/workshops). The project studies the global rise of private art museums, in which private collectors open up their collections to the public, in different ways. Its main interest is in the role which these museums play in translating rising economic inequality into cultural forms of inequality. Quantitatively, it studies the reasons for the spectacular rise in the 21st century as well as the impact of private museums on the value of art and artistic careers. Qualitatively, it has zoomed in on specific regions including Brazil, Germany and Turkey. Since the project started, a database of private art museums and a public report on private museums have been established (available on privatemuseumresearch.org).

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher Political Trees

This study looks at trees as political tools in the world today. Trees are “the lungs of the world” and need urgent protection in view of widespread overexploitation for food, building material and many other human needs. Their cultural and spiritual meanings are manifold, and the use and protection of trees is never a simple process. This project analyses how humans turn trees into political tools and harness ecological concerns to political goals. One form of tree-based politics is planting or uprooting trees to facilitate—practically and symbolically—the occupation and settling of land. Another is resistance to deforestation, which affects indigenous people. I call such practices arboreal nationalism.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position in Experimental Neutrino Physics

The University of Amsterdam is a partner in Nikhef, the Dutch National Institute for Subatomic Physics. The Neutrino Physics group at Nikhef takes part in the KM3NeT and DUNE experiments. The KM3NeT Collaboration is constructing a neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea. Arrays of light-sensitive elements record the Cherenkov light produced by fast travelling charged particles in the sea water, these particles could originate from interactions of neutrinos. The energy and direction of the original neutrinos can be reconstructed from the amount of Cherenkov photons and their time-of-arrival in the detectors. The densely-instrumented KM3NeT/ORCA building block will focus on the measurement of neutrino oscillations, whereas the sparsely-instrumented KM3NeT/ARCA block will measure cosmic neutrinos and search for their sources. Our group is looking for a postdoc who will join us in the KM3NeT experiment with the goal to make a world-leading measurement of atmospheric neutrino oscillations and work towards the unambiguous determination of the neutrino mass ordering. You will work with experimental and theoretical physicists in the context of the NWO programme “The Hidden Universe of Weakly Interacting Particles”.

(11) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position on Integration of Quantum and Classical Security

Are you fascinated by security in theory and/or practice? Are you willing to take on the challenge of securing the next generation of computer systems and networks? Do you like to work in a team of young researchers? Join our dynamic team as a Postdoctoral Researcher and contribute to ground-breaking research at the forefront of quantum technology! Quantum technologies are advancing at an unprecedented pace. On one hand, the progress in developing quantum computers poses a significant threat to our security infrastructure, particularly concerning public-key cryptography. On the other hand, the integration of quantum communication and quantum data into our networks presents novel opportunities that can enhance security functionalities. However, at present, quantum components predominantly exist in experimental stages, and their security requires in-depth study and assessment. Among the prominent applications of quantum networks is quantum key distribution (QKD), which theoretically offers superior security guarantees compared to classical cryptographic schemes. However, does the utilization of QKD truly provide tangible benefits over post-quantum cryptography? In the realistic context of trusted-node QKD networks, what kind of security guarantees can be proven depending on the deployed key-management system? At a broader level, this postdoc position aims to investigate the advantages of exploiting quantum effects within the domain of security and explore the integration of quantum and classical security guarantees both in theory and practice.

(12) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Researcher “Latin American popular culture and society”

Your research deals with contemporary Latin American popular culture in public and digital spaces, and its interactions with society, politics and history. You will generate new knowledge and approaches and will publish articles on how Latin American popular culture and (political) art travel through space and time, and how social and political events, collective initiatives and artists – film and theatre makers, cartoonists, painters, musicians, authors – influence one another. Your research extends disciplinary boundaries, engaging with wider (global) debates and developments regarding identity-formation, memory-making, cultural heritage, social justice, decolonization, religion and/or migration. While insight in the ways in which digital platforms, social media and other new technologies increasingly connect local and national cultural expressions to wider (transnational) audiences and users is highly relevant, you are also aware that place-based social interactions remain very influential. Your study of Latin American popular culture lends itself to trans-local theorization, not limited to a specific country or community.
