(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral reasearch fellow (3 years) in systems or computer science (SEFAS)
At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care, a full-time (100 %) position as postdoctoral research fellow is available for a period of three (3) years. The position is part of the groundbreaking ERC Consolidator project ”Decoding Death and Dying in People with Dementia by Digital thanotyping (5-D)”, financed by the European Research Council (ERC).
The 5-D project will develop methods and digital tools to identify that a person with dementia is at the end of life, aimed to understand underlying pain and distressing symptoms in people who are no longer able to explain their suffering. The project will combine traditional assessment scales with sensor-based measurements, with novel analyses based on signal processing and artificial intelligence.
5-D is part of an innovative, active, and multidisciplinary research group: The Centre for Elderly and Nursing Home Medicine (SEFAS), which has several ongoing studies in which sensor data from wearables and radar installation are used to monitor symptoms, intervention effects, and disease course in older adults and people with neurological diseases such as dementia and Parkinson’s disease. Professor Bettina S. Husebø is the head of SEFAS. The centre has approximately 15 employees, and a large network both nationally and internationally. SEFAS is a partner for the Alrek Health Cluster, Årstadveien, Bergen, and is supported by the Trond Mohn Foundation related to Complex Conditions and Ageing (CC.AGE).

The candidate will work at MediaFutures at MediaCity Bergen in Work Package 4 (WP4) on Media Content Interaction and Accessibility. The candidate will collaborate closely both with researchers and partners in this work package, including, Schibsted, TV2, VizRT etc., and with relevant researchers and partners in other work packages as well. This is a 2-year research position, starting fall 2024. The position will be hosted by the Department of Information Science and Media Studies at the University of Bergen. The research will be conducted in close collaboration with a MediaFutures industry partner. The research will target long-term industry challenges and publish results in leading conferences and journals for the HCI and media research (ACM or IEEE). The researcher will be expected to work within the premises of the industry partner (secondment) for parts of the project and produce research results which can be verified within the context of production systems or products belonging to the industry partner. Research output may for instance include technical prototypes integrated into an existing production flow, or demonstrations of new standalone tools or products. At the same time, these prototypes will provide input to systematic user studies and publications. Valued competencies and skills may include some of the following: programming, statistics, machine learning, data analysis, and/or UI design.
The Work Package 4 (WP4) on Media Content Interaction and Accessibility aims to develop methods and technologies supporting adapted media experiences for all types of users, regardless of their technical aptitude and personal needs. Our focus is to overcome barriers to engagement, understanding, and participation. Such barriers can be related to language, culture, age, knowledge level, or associated with disabilities. Simultaneously, we strive to support media experiences that cater to individual demands, such as the desire for specialised narratives, multi-device and/or multi-modal interaction, advanced graphics, and social integration. Key industry partners involved in WP4 include Schibsted, TV2, and VizRT
This research position will explore one or more research questions concerning the use of AI in media production and user experiences. For example, how can AI be exploited to produce new media products, fostering more adapted and accessible user experiences while also limiting production costs? How can additional layers of statistics, visualisations, or individual highlights be automatically generated based on user preferences, and incorporated seamlessly into the user experience? How can consumers be allowed to speak directly with an ongoing media experience, for instance to engage with a larger context behind it, including active datasets or narratives, possibly spanning multiple seasons of a series or news articles over an extended time-period.

The Norwegian Offshore Directorate has for the last 15 years collaborated with Center for Deep Sea Research at the University of Bergen with mapping and exploration of the deep sea within Norwegian jurisdiction.
This collaboration is now extended with the employment of a temporary researcher. It is expected that the researcher focuses on research related to geological processes in the deep sea, and research questions of relevance for the Norwegian Offshore Directorate. The researcher shall participate with scientific understanding of the development of the Norwegian Sea based on newly collected 2D seismic data. Further, the researcher will be involved in the geological work at the Norwegian Offshore Directorate, and it is expected that the researcher works from the directorate’s office when relevant. The researcher is expected to participate in the planning and execution of research cruises led by the Center for Deep Sea Research or the Norwegian Offshore Directorate. The directorate need archiving of manganese crusts collected on joint cruises in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022. Center for Deep Sea research has a large collection of rocks, maps and ROV-video. The researcher should have an overview of the data and contribute to the make these data available.

- The main objective of the TMS Brain Research Initiative is to identify core principles of plasticity and neural circuit dynamics in the brain.
- The project is hosted by the University of Bergen (UiB) at the Mohn Research Centre for the Brain and organized as a consortium collaboration between the Department of Biomedicine at UiB and the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
- The consortium project is organized into five interactive work packages, based on multidisciplinary collaborations between the UiB and NTNU partners. Through the centre’s activities, the Postdoc will interact with a multidisciplinary team covering broad areas of neuroscience and gain experience in scientific presentation and discussion.
- The Postdoc will work on a project studying the neuromodulation of retinal microcircuits for vision in starlight, twilight, and daylight.
- The Postdoc will join an active neuroscience research group with two principal investigators, prof. Espen Hartveit and prof. Meg Veruki. The project focuses on investigating plasticity of neuronal microcircuits involving amacrine cells in the mammalian retina, including functions of ion channels and chemical and electrical synapses. Primary methods include patch-clamp electrophysiology, two-photon microscopy, two-photon uncaging, and two-photon FLIM-FRET of intracellular signaling. The experimental work will be performed with the mammalian retina as the model system.
- The laboratory has modern setups for in vitro electrophysiology combined with two-photon microscopy, including uncaging and FLIM-FRET.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow position within Paleo and Present-day Isotope-Enabled Climate Modelling
The postdoctoral research fellow will be responsible for developing the isotope-enabled regional climate model capabilities at the Geophysical Institute and Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research. Specific focus will be on comparing observations and model simulations of the water stable isotopic composition in the hydrological cycle over the North Atlantic, Greenland, Antarctica, and the Tibetan Plateau. The research fellow will be utilizing a growing set of water vapor and precipitation isotope observations from year-round tower measurements, isotope-flux measurements, and vertical profiles obtained from drones and balloons. The research fellow will as part of the work utilize field observations of snow-air exchange processes obtained from campaigns in Greenland and Antarctica. The target of the research will be directed at understanding past and present-day drivers of the atmospheric hydrological cycle and the research fellow will therefore work closely with the paleoclimate community at the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research and become a key resource for the Bjerknes community. Using a suit of proxy models, regional climate modelling, and global Earth System Models the research fellow will deploy paleo-data assimilation as an integrative tool of the research portfolio of the fellow. The research fellow will work in a highly international group and bridge both the observational and modelling community and will therefore be expected to have good collaborative skills.
The work of the research fellow will be aligned with ongoing CORDEX (Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment) initiatives such as CPTP and RCN project iTRANSFER, and also future EU-funded projects as well as recently ended projects such as ERC project SNOWISO.
