In the group of Physics and Physical Chemistry of Foods, we are looking for an enthusiastic candidate for a four-year PhD trajectory on a project on cheese alternatives, and understanding how ingredients can alter the structure and different textural properties. The development for cheese alternatives is relevant to boost the transition to a more plant-based diet. Mimicking the divers properties of cheese is not straightforward, due to the unique and versatile structure of casein present in cheese. To mimic these properties, new strategies are needed to control the structure of gels prepared from plant-base alternatives, and more understanding how specific structural features link to textural characteristics, such as fracture properties, melting and stretching.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Agrivoltaics crop production
As a PhD candidate, you will contribute to the design of efficient and practical agrivoltaic systems. To this end, you will quantify the performance of a range of plant species across a number of different agrivoltaic setups available within the project. You will determine growth, development, yield and underlying performance traits such as photosynthesis and evapotranspiration of the plants, and the heterogeneity in these traits in relation to solar panel setup and characteristics. You will also observe disease pressure and a range of soil parameters. To understand plant functioning, you will additionally quantify microclimatic variables related to light and humidity within the agrivoltaic setups. You will use this information to analyse how agrivoltaic systems could be tuned and optimized.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position: Sweet or sour – how the nectar microbiome shapes the pollinator community in brassicaceous plants
We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate in the field of insect-flower-microbe interactions who would like to unravel the effect of nectar microbes on flower visiting insects.
Pollination by insects is rewarded with floral nectar. However, as a nutrient-rich and well-protected environment, flower nectar also supports a diverse community of beneficial, commensal, and antagonistic microbes. These microorganisms influence the interaction between the plant and its pollinators, but also with nectar robbers and flower-feeding herbivores by altering the nutritional value and the chemical composition of the nectar. Despite the importance of pollination for seed production of many brassicaceous crops, little is known on the role of the nectar microbiome for plant fitness and seed set in these plants. Besides plant fitness, nectar microbes also impact pollinator health and thereby strongly influence the pollinator community beyond individual plant-pollinator interactions.

You will study rhizobacteria for their stress-protective properties against drought and aphids in brassicaceous plants with the aim to identify beneficial bacteria, the molecular mechanisms and signaling pathways underlying these interactions. PhD position summary/title: PhD student herbivorous insect-plant-microbiome interactions
We are looking for talented PhD candidates in the field of insect-plant-microbiome interactions who want to unravel how beneficial microbes can reduce insect herbivory. This vacancy involves two positions: One PhD position on root fly-cabbage-microbiome interactions, and one PhD position on aphid-pepper-microbiome interactions.
Cabbage root flies and aphids are major agricultural pests that are still largely controlled with insecticides. Alternative, more sustainable methods to combat these pest are desperately needed. Plants harbour diverse and dynamic microbial communities in and around their roots and shoots. Some of these microbes help the plant in suppressing insect herbivory directly, by reducing insect fitness, or indirectly by inducing plant defense. Many facets of these insect-plant-microbiome interactions are still largely unknown. In this project, you will explore the role of microbes in the rhizo- and/or phyllospere in protecting plants against insects. You will study plant-soil feedback mechanisms, make microbial isolates and test inoculants for their effect on insect and plant performance. You will perform physiological and molecular studies to understand the underlying mechanisms of microbe-induced plant resistance. With this, you will unravel the role of beneficial microbes and the processes that are crucial for plants to maximize profitable functions from their microbiome when attacked by insects.

This PhD project will explore the dynamic interactions between human and non-human agents and green infrastructure within peri-urban landscapes. This first requires the development of a comprehensive ABM framework able to capture these complex interactions, and, in a second phase, the application of this model to simulate the effects of different GI designs (e.g., parks, green corridors, urban forests) on outcomes such as physical activity, mental health, and species richness. This model should allow the exploration of the synergies and trade-offs between human well-being and ecological benefits offered by different site-specific design solutions. Working within a landscape architecture research group, you will both contribute to the development of new modeling tools and translate the resulting simulations into practical design insights and potential policy recommendations. PhD position summary/title: PhD in Tribological properties of dispersed and multi-component food systems
The quality and sensory perception of foods is determined by the structure and physicochemical properties of the specific food structure. Simple sensory attributes can often be directly linked to rheological characteristics. However, for more complete attributes, also lubrication (frictional) aspects are important. These lubrication aspects are very much related to the properties of the continuous phase, the type of dispersed phase, and the interactions between the different ingredients. This specific project aims to understand the link between lubrication aspects and the structural organization of a variety of dispersed and multi-component systems, and gaining insights into the physical phenomenon driving lubrication, such as wetting behavior, adsorption properties, droplet stability, jamming events, etc. Parameters that will be systematically varied are particle size, hydrophobicity, shape, volume fraction, crystallization behavior, etc. The structural organization will be examined by a variety of techniques, including microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, rheology, etc.

Besides the nucleus, plastids and mitochondria also contain genetic materials (known as cytoplasmic genomes) essential for key cellular processes including photosynthesis, respiration, and metabolism. Since these organelles cannot form de novo, they must be inherited from one generation to the next.
What makes this inheritance process unique? Unlike nuclear DNA, which comes from both parents, plastid and mitochondrial genomes are inherited exclusively from the mother. Despite being known for decades, the molecular mechanisms underlying maternal inheritance remain largely unknown.
Recent breakthroughs in cytoplasmic genetics have offered powerful new tools that now allow us to investigate this long-standing mystery. Leveraging these cutting-edge techniques, our research aims to uncover the underlying mechanisms governing plastid and mitochondrial inheritance. Gaining insight into this fundamental biological process holds great potential for innovative applications in agriculture and plant breeding.
