In this exciting role, you will work on computational analysis, data integration and machine learning among other methods directed towards innovative approaches to decode immune responses, among other biological processes. In this exciting role, you will work with a world-class team from industry, academia, and national laboratories to understand, characterize and optimize structure-processing-function relationships of a broad class of ion-exchange membranes and interfaces as part of the Hydrogen and Fuel-cell program at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. This will include advanced electrochemical diagnostics of the polymeric separators, solid-polymer electrolytes, and thin-films as well as their in-situ and operando structural characterization to ascertain the relevant multiscale properties, establish structure-property maps and provide guidance and concepts to mitigate any observed bottlenecks by means of materials design or device straggles. Such analyses may include modeling of the polymer properties and various physics occurring in these material systems. You will interact with the Energy Conversion Group, focused on understanding various phenomena in fuel-cells and electrolyzers with a particular emphasis on underlying fundamental processes occurring in ionomers and interfaces in a wide range of energy and environmental applications, as well as will complement the existing strengths in the hydrogen and fuel cell program in advanced material-level diagnostics, characterization, and analysis.

(10) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow (New Systems Biology & Microbiome Project)
In this exciting role, you will have the opportunity to develop new genetic tools for non-model bacteria, including those from the plant rhizosphere and field soil and apply these tools to characterize microbial gene function on a massive scale. The research will focus on the use of methanotrophic bacteria in reducing methane emissions in rice fields and wetlands. A recent example of tools developed by the team includes random barcode transposon site sequencing (RB-TnSeq; PMID 2596844), dual barcoded shotgun expression library screening (Dub-seq; PMID 30659179), and magic pools for parallel testing of genetic systems in bacteria (PMID 29359196).
This position will have the opportunity to work on novel microbial isolates from rice fields and be responsible for the establishment of methodologies that will enable the genome engineering using RB-TnSeq to generate gene mutant libraries, sequencing, and computational analysis of mutant libraries in plant-microbe experiments in a high-throughput manner. You will perform plant-microbe bioassays, analyze microbiome sequencing data, and present your findings in conferences and peer-reviewed journals. In addition, you will have the opportunity to work with a diverse team of LBNL-based and external collaborators, including those in the ENIGMA and m-CAFEs Scientific Focus Areas (SFAs).

The Electricity Markets & Policy (EMP) Department informs public and private decision making through technical, economic, and policy analysis of energy-related topics. Staff at EMP employ a range of interdisciplinary methods and tools appropriate to the topic at hand, including primary data, economic, and statistical analyses; modeling; and survey and interview-based research. We are conducting cost-effectiveness analysis and modeling to understand the potential growth in non-CO2 GHGs and climate super pollutants.
The current initiative seeks to 1) conduct deeper techno-economic analysis of methane and other non-CO2 GHG mitigation measures and evaluate their cost-effectiveness under China-specific context, 2) develop a deep mitigation and policy constraints scenario to understand the potential and benefits for additional reductions beyond current mitigation measures, and 3) develop a roadmap in reducing methane emissions in China before 2030.

In this exciting role, you will apply mechanistic and machine learning models to study observed effects of warming on soil and ecosystem carbon cycling and the mechanisms shaping the soil response, and to estimate potential soil carbon feedbacks with climate. The project encourages collaboration with a wide range of scientists, from graduate students to senior researchers, studying soil biogeochemistry under warming, how to best represent these processes in models, and how to use the models to extrapolate in space and time.
