(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Labor Economics and the Economics of Crime

The research project is entitled, “Breaking the Inequality-Crime Cycle: Biases in Police Decisions, ‘What Works’ in Prison, and Firm Demand for Workers with Criminal Records”. The project is funded by the European Research Council with Prof. Randi Hjalmarsson (Gothenburg University) as the PI and Prof. Matthew Lindquist as the local research coordinataor at SOFI, Stockholm University.

Economic inequality and segregation imply vastly unequal opportunities in many dimensions – the labor market, healthcare, informal networks, exposure to police – that can impact the chances of ending up in trouble with the law. Once caught in the justice system, it can be hard to break free, especially if a criminal record increases the barriers to employment. This cycle of crime and economic inequality can even be perpetuated across generations, if the impacts of a criminal record spill-over to an offender’s family members.

Deadline :  1 February 2024.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Neutrino Astroparticle Physics at the IceCube Observatory

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole, Antarctica, is the world’s largest neutrino telescope, operated by an international collaboration of about 350 scientists in 14 countries. IceCube pursues a broad array of science objectives from particle physics to astronomy. Chief among these is using the weakly-interacting neutrino particle to explore extreme astrophysical environments, complementing observations made with photons. Having first discovered the high-energy astrophysical neutrino flux in 2013, IceCube has now started to associate some of these neutrinos with supermassive black holes in nearby active galaxies, and has made the first observations of the Milky Way galaxy using neutrinos, rather than light. These breakthroughs, together with the first detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo detectors, signal that we are entering the era Multi-Messenger Astronomy.

Stockholm University has played a leading role in neutrino astronomy beginning thirty years ago with the AMANDA neutrino telescope at the South Pole. Today the IceCube group is also part of the Oskar Klein Centre for Cosmoparticle Physics, a rich scientific environment that comprises over a hundred researchers working in theory and experiment in the fields of astronomy, astrophysics and particle physics at both Stockholm University and the KTH Royal Institute for Technology.

(14) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow on Advanced Solid-State NMR Experimentation on Borosilicate Glasses

Despite that borosilicate glasses (BS) are exploited in numerous applications from everyday products to nuclear waste encapsulation and biomedical implants, the understanding of their sub-nanometer structure remains limited. In particular, some “exotic” structural motifs, such as directly interlinked BO4 groups (B[4]-O-B[4] linkages) and non-bridging O (NBO) species at BO4 groups (B[4]-NBO bonds) are either considered absent or remains largely ignored in current BS glass-structure models. Yet, we have recently shown that B[4]-O-B[4] linkages are both inherent and abundant structrual motifs in BS glasses [1,3]. The present postdoctoral project is an extension of our recent research on structure and properties of BS glasses [1-3], where magic-angle-spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy will be utilized for unravelling the borosilicate glass structure across a sub-nanometer scale. Those results will then be analysed in conjunction with measured mechanical and elastic properties of the glasses to establish composition-structure-property relationships. One part of the project also involves the development of new NMR experimental techniques for an improved probing of 11B-17O connectivities in borate-based glasses.

(16) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Deep Convective Storm Systems

Aerosol particles affect Earth’s climate directly by scattering and absorbing radiation and indirectly by affecting cloud microphysical processes. Currently, rapid changes in anthropogenic aerosol emissions are taking place all over the world, which may influence the micro- and macro-scale characteristics of thunderstorms and extreme rain events in highly uncertain ways. This project aims to improve our understanding of aerosol effects on deep convective storm systems by performing convection-resolving model simulations and comparing the simulations with novel in-situ and remote sensing data.

The position will be part of the new Horizon Europe project CleanCloud, which aims to understand interactions between clouds and aerosols in various geographic and climatic regions and to improve their representation in numerical climate and weather models to quantify their impact on climate, weather, and society. As a part of CleanCloud, the successful candidate will join a broad international research community consisting of 14 international research teams at the forefront of global climate research.

(17) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Human-Computer Interaction

The postdoctoral position is within Sustainable Human-Computer Interaction (SHCI), with a focus on design and the regulatory aspects that shape digital innovation for environmental care, more specifically waste management.

The successful candidate will work on a three-year project with Associate Professor Chiara Rossitto (Stockholm University, DSV), Associate Professor Rob Comber (Royal Institute of Technology – KTH), and Associate Professor Stanley Greenstein (Stockholm University, Department of Law).

The project draws on a view of design as socially, contextually, and politically produced. Within the case of waste management, the goal is to develop design methods and toolkits to explore the relations between values mandated by the law, specific design features, and multi-stakeholders’ perspectives. Connecting to contemporary societal and research challenges – e.g., the ethics of AI, the digitalization of essential urban services, or tensions between regulation and digital innovation – the project will examine design for environmental sustainability, taking into account regulatory frameworks for environmental protection. The position involves the development of new design methods, practical expertise, and scientific knowledge to include regulatory aspects early on, when digital technologies are designed.
