A position is available at the University of Calgary for a postdoctoral researcher to join an interdisciplinary team developing a novel way to develop and synthesis battery materials and processes. The work will involve in-depth electrochemistry, material science, and electrical analysis.  This project could be a part of MITACS Accelerate/Elevate project (a higher salary may be provided). The postdoctoral researcher may be required to closely collaborate with the sponsor and will be expected to work at the company.  In addition, the researcher would mentor other team members. 

This position will report directly to the Principal Investigator, afaculty member at the Department of Chemical & Petroleum Engineering and director of EERG at the University of Calgary. It involves a wide range of work focused on research projects in carbon capture and utilization (CCU). This position is located at the University of Calgary main campus. This position is a Fixed-Term, FullTime Employment for the duration of one year commencing from December 2022 with the possibility of extension based on the performance and fund availability.

The focus of the project is on prion diseases, fatal and infectious neurodegenerative disorders of man and animals. Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is an expanding prion disease of deer and elk in Northern America and Scandinavia. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing a NIH-funded project to characterize the zoonotic potential of CWD. The group has provided evidence by transmission experiments to different transgenic mouse and rodent models that Cynomolgus macaques inoculated via different routes with CWD-positive cervid tissues produce infectious prions. The proposed studies will unravel the properties of these prions, how they will adapt to humans and which pathways are activated in brain cells and associated with clinical disease. Results from these studies will uncover the potential manifestation of CWD in humans, which is highly relevant for human health. Experimental models and techniques used will include transgenic mice, bank voles, primary cells, gene-edited cells, protein/immunoblot analysis, prion conversion and conformational assays, IHC, and single-cell RNASeq. 

The candidate will work with Dr. Faizal Careem in the study entitled “environmental monitoring of HPAIV in Alberta with a focus on transmission to commercial poultry operations. The sequencing to characterise HPAIV will be done in collaboration with Dr. Yohannes Berhane of the National Centre for Foreign Animal Disease (Winnipeg Laboratory – Arlington). The candidate is required to work at two locations (Calgary and Winnipeg) and under containment level 2 and 3 environments. Prior to working at Winnipeg laboratory, the candidate needs security clearance.

Seeking an exceptional, hard-working and outcomes-oriented postdoctoral scholar to advance two related grant projects on food marketing, policy and children’s health. Reporting to the PI, the PDS will develop a monitoring protocol for tracking child-targeted foods, execute and coordinate data collection, engage in data cleaning, and develop manuscripts of the data. The successful applicant will also conduct relevant literature reviews and engage in grant preparation/writing related to the project.

A postdoctoral fellow position is available at the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI) in the Departments of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Pediatrics for a highly qualified and motivated individual to support our basic laboratory projects focused on role of the gut-brain-microbiota axis in neurodevelopmental disorders.  The successful candidate should have a strong background in animal models, molecular biology, neuroscience, metabolomics, microbiota and metabolism. A background in bioinformatics (sequencing data, machine learning) would be considered an asset.

Dr. Giesbrecht is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics who studies stress and child development. Dr. Lebel is an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology who studies brain development. They co-lead the Pregnancy during the Pandemic (PdP) study, which is studying the impact of maternal prenatal stress during the COVID-19 pandemic on children’s development. The PdP study collected physical and mental health information, as well as life changes in response to COVID-19 in >9000 pregnant individuals across Canada. We continue to follow the children born to these individuals, measuring their development through surveys, biosamples, and neuroimaging. The postdoctoral scholar will work with Drs. Giesbrecht and Lebel to study links between prenatal maternal stress, children’s epigenetic profiles and brain imaging (structural and/or functional MRI). 

This is a posting for a post-doctoral fellow to pursue scientific goals associated with infectious diseases diagnostics research. Activities include supporting clinical sample biobanking initiatives, ethics applications, and laboratory wet bench experiments with molecular techniques such as DNA extraction and amplification from clinical samples, protein work, gene cloning, and next generation DNA/RNA sequencing. Opportunities exist for future work branching into implementation and commercialization of point-of-care nucleic acid diagnostics in LMICs. A major focus is ensuring accurate data quality, data storage, data analysis, and curating sample inventories. Support with technical advice and scientific decision-making will also be required.

Successful candidates will be recent PhD graduates who are interested in making fundamental discoveries in tumor evolution and immune response that can lead to translational impact in aggressive and largely incurable cancers. Research approaches in our team include computational analyses of tumor multi-omic profiles at bulk and single cell level, with spatial and temporal resolution within patient samples. We are interested in how tumor cells cooperate with non-neoplastic cells of the microenvironment to respond to selective pressures in general, and in particular to standard therapy regimes.  The focus of the candidate will be on establishing methods to integrate long-read sequencing data into our current workflows for genome and transcriptome analyses. Key goals include identification of novel biomarkers and targets for therapy that can be further pursued within a fully operational preclinical pipeline toward clinical translation.

The postdoctoral fellow will focus on studies in the analysis of real-world data for cancer outcomes and methods for precision health analytics under the supervision of Drs. Winson Cheung, Professor and Lead for Health Services Research for Oncology in Alberta and Darren Brenner, Associate Professor and Armstrong Investigator in Molecular Cancer Epidemiology at the University of Calgary. Drs Cheung and Brenner are conducting studies focused on the application of novel methods to large datasets and electronic health records in cancer. Priority projects include the development and application of machine learning algorithms, natural language processing, development of risk prediction models and clinical decision support algorithms. Numerous opportunities exist for the successful candidate to contribute to multiple on-going and planned research studies, to develop their own area of research expertise, to publish and present scholarly work, and to obtain additional specialized training. 

A post-doctoral scientist position is available as part of a large youth mental health research program under the co-supervision of Drs. Gina Dimitropoulos and Scott Patten at the University of Calgary. Focusing on child and adolescent eating disorders, our program of research spans multiple areas including treatment development, validating existing evidence-based treatments, the epidemiology and health outcomes of individuals with eating disorders, as well as the neurobiological impacts of restrictive eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa. Since its inception in 2017, our research program has grown to over 15 studies with a focus on growing the evidence base on eating disorders at the national and international levels. Our program is also built on the collaboration of local, national, and international researchers, clinicians, healthcare decision-makers, and policy makers with the aim of developing and strengthening existing treatments and services to better support people with eating disorders and their families. For a prospective post-doctoral associate, there is the opportunity to be involved in numerous research activities including working with large administrative health datasets, conducting systematic reviews, facilitating knowledge translation activities, and implementing individual and family engagement strategies.

The postdoctoral scholar will use mixed methods research (quantitative and qualitative) to evaluate health outcomes of cancer survivors using administrative health data, conduct patient-oriented research focused on pancreatic cancer, and evaluate decision making along the cancer trajectory using scoping reviews and/or surveys and focus groups. The postdoctoral scholar will work under the supervision of Dr. Colleen Cuthbert, assistant professor in the Faculty of Nursing, Canada Research Chair in Patient and Family Centered Cancer Survivorship, and Dr. Winson Cheung, Professor and Lead for Health Services Research for Oncology in Alberta. Drs Cuthbert and Cheung are health services researchers conducting studies focused broadly on health outcomes in cancer patients.
