Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate for the Project “Pyrogenic carbon and carbonating minerals (PyMiCCS) for enhanced plant growth and carbon capture and storage” § 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG
The BMBF-funded PyMiCCS consortium project will examine how the combined application of biochar and rock powder in soils may promote carbon dioxide removal from the atmosphere via soil carbon sequestration and enhanced weathering. The project will use an integrated approach that includes comprehensive field and laboratory experiments and also process-based numerical modelling. The candidate will investigate feedbacks between vegetation, weathering rates in the soil, and dynamics of soil organic matter in different ecosystems and under future climate change, using numerical modelling. This analysis aims to find out how multiple interacting biogeochemical soil and vegetation processes will affect the overall C-sequestration rate. The model will be developed and evaluated in cooperation with other PyMiCCS projects and then applied to derive a first global map of potential C sequestration by PyMiCCS, including scenarios for the future.

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate for the Project “Molecular adaptations of the brain of diving mammals” § 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG
A remarkable feature of many whales and seals is an extraordinary dive capacity, which allows some species to remain submerged for more than 2 h. This astonishing performance is due to a combination of various behavioural, anatomical and physiological adaptations. With this project, we want to reveal the specific molecular mechanisms that explain the unusual hypoxia tolerance in the brain of diving mammals and the task distribution between neurons and glial cells. To provide a novel understanding of the energy metabolism and stress response of the mammalian brain the applicant will generate celltype specific transcriptomes via SingleCellSequencing and LaserCaptureMicrodissection. After identifying possible candidate genes the applicant will proceed with functional analysis via neuronal and glia cell culture.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate for the Project “Evolution of globins and other gene families in lungfish and related species” § 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG
Lungfish are the closest living relatives to all land vertebrates among the “fishes”. Their phylogenetic position is crucial for the investigation of both tetrapod evolution and innovations associated with the terrestrialization of vertebrates and the required adaptations. Lungfish also show remarkable physiological adaptations, such as hypoxia tolerance, aestivation, longevity, and the ability of regeneration of entire limbs. Lungfish have the largest genomes known in the animal kingdom. The project aims to understand the genomic imprint of the transition from fish to tetrapod and the adaptations to a terrestrial environment, as well as the identification of lungfish-specific adaptations. We will use tissue-specific transcriptomes of all lungfish-species (and, when available, also the lungfish genome) to identify genes and gene families that had been crucial for these adaptation. We will start with the globin gene family, which is a model system for gene evolution and which display a remarkable diversity in lungfish.
