(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Radiotherapy

Applications are invited for a Research Associate in Radiotherapy-Induced Cardiovascular Toxicity to join the CRUK Manchester Radiation Research Centre of Excellence (CRUK RadNet Manchester) team to drive forward a collaborative programme of research between the Divisions of Pharmacy and Optometry, Cardiovascular Sciences and Cancer Sciences. The post will be tenable on a fixed term basis until the 31st October 2026 in the first instance, commencing 1st October 2025.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to initiate research aimed at providing mechanistic understanding of cardiovascular toxicity induced by radiotherapy. We have previously shown that in lung cancer patients, the extent of radiation dose to specific heart regions is associated with worse survival and morbidity. Using preclinical models, the post holder will investigate whether heart tolerance is influenced by predisposition to cardiovascular disease and/or pre-existing cardiovascular pathology. Understanding what governs risk of early morbidity gives the opportunity for interventions to ameliorate cardiac toxicity. This project aims to investigate the mechanistic impact of radiotherapy on cardiovascular function using a combination of in vitro and in vivo studies, using cellular and mouse models of hypertension and/or diabetes. A combination of clinically relevant non-invasive imaging approaches to monitor myocardial function and pathology will be implemented alongside ex vivo tissue analyses to decipher potential mechanisms impacting heart tolerance and potential intervention strategies.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual from a biological or medical sciences background with experience of preclinical cardiovascular research. The post holder will have the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, will have excellent communication and organisational skills and a proven track record of delivering impactful research. A publication record in peer-reviewed journals would be advantageous.

(10) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate (Gesius) (Two Posts Available)

Palimpsests have yielded spectacular new discoveries in the area of ancient texts: hitherto lost works are recovered and can be read again. The PI and his team recently identified a set of five palimpsests which will radically change the way in which we view the history of medicine in late antique Alexandria and the transmission of medical knowledge from Greek via Syriac into Arabic. These palimpsests contain Commentaries by Gesius (ca. 450–530s) in Syriac translation on two works by the famous Greek physician Galen (ca. 129–216), namely Mixtures and Natural Faculties. Gesius emerged as the most prominent of the iatrosophists or professors of medicine in late antique Alexandria, a period that had a tremendous impact on the subsequent tradition, both east and west. Mixtures and Natural Faculties belong to the so-called Sixteen Books of Galen, which formed part of the core curriculum in the amphitheatres of the iatrosophists. Moreover, the palimpsests also contain the Syriac version of Galen’s texts.

By using a mixed method approach, we propose to make the erased texts readable again, and then edit, translate and study them. Combining multispectral image capture and analysis with machine learning techniques, we will be able to transcribe these lost texts in full and, in the process, reconstruct the original manuscript. We shall study Gesius’ works in the context of medicine in late antique Alexandria and place it in a tradition where commentaries, abrigments, branch diagrams and encyclopaedias were all employed to impart medical knowledge. Finally, these Syriac translations offer us an opportunity to study how the Sixteen Books of Galen were transmitted into Syriac, and what role they played in Graeco-Arabic translations. We will thus study Gesius’ role as the chief medical authority in Alexandria and his subsequent influence, in order to judge his place in history on the basis of his own writings for the very first time.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate (PDRA) in Fungal Infection Biology

The Bertuzzi’s laboratory at the Manchester Fungal Infection is looking for two outstanding candidates be part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers, working on an Wellcome Trust funded project investigating how Mucorales fungi adapt to natural and in-host environments and how stress adaptation drives infection. The posts are available from the 5th of January 2026 on a full-time basis for 3 years, with the possibility to extend.

The candidates must have extensive expertise in fungal infection, with ideal candidates having intimate knowledge of at least two of the following: i) genetic manipulation of filamentous fungi, ii) in vitro and/or in vivo infection models, iii) confocal/microfluidic- and/or imaging flow cytometry-based experimentation, iv) fungal genomics and transcriptomic analysis.

The candidates will be expected to work alongside the PI to conceptualise and design experiments and to work towards the publication of their findings in high-impact journals. Thus, evidence of a developing research publication track record will be advantageous. Considering the interdisciplinary nature of this programme of work, the candidates will be required to engage positively with collaborators both within the institute and at external organisations. The candidates will also be expected to contribute to other projects ongoing in the laboratory, to work seamlessly as a team supporting each other’s, other PDRAs in the group, postgraduate and undergraduate trainees. (15) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Robust Feedback Control Theory

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to conduct research in fundamental robust feedback control theory via input-output methods under the supervision of Prof. Alexander Lanzon, Chair in Control Engineering at the University of Manchester and Head of Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. This PDRA post will deliver the objectives of a research grant awarded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) entitled “Input-restricted robust feedback control of nonlinear dynamical systems”.

The research involves developing fundamental robust feedback control theory for nonlinear dynamical systems using input-output operator theory and graph separation theory. Excellent knowledge of input-output dissipativity theory, input-output passivity theory, IQC theory, graph separation theory, and/or operator theory (e.g. manipulation of norms and inner-products) will be a strong asset. The recruited PDRA will have a solid understanding of feedback stability analysis and control theory using input-output approaches with strong functional analysis abilities and/or mathematical systems theory skills. You will also have demonstrable potential for performing leading-edge control theory research at an international level.

The input-output approach in control theory describes (linear and nonlinear) dynamical systems as operators mapping an input to an output. Feedback stability in this input-output framework means that endogenous signals around the feedback loop are well-behaved for all exogenous inputs – in an input space – injected into the feedback loop. Influential input-output feedback stability results which can be applied to nonlinear systems to guarantee robust feedback stability include the classical small-gain, input-output passivity, input-output dissipativity, and absolute stability criteria, as well as more modern input-output stability approaches such as the Integral Quadratic Constraint framework and dynamic dissipativity. In this project, you will create fundamental analysis and control theory for input-restricted feedback stability.
