Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Research Associate in Health Psychology

We wish to appoint a Research Associate with expertise in Health Psychology to join the Manchester Centre for Health Psychology. The successful applicant will work closely with Professor Chris Armitage, as well as wider project teams.

The postholder will work on a project examining take-up of Pension Credit funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). You will undertake highly relevant applied research and liaise closely with independent economic and social policy experts, plus policymakers and advisers in the Department of Health and Social Care.

A PhD in Health Psychology or related subject is essential. Candidates will need to demonstrate a track record of productivity, mixed methods research and advanced understanding of current behaviour change theories and practice.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate Stem Cell Biology

An enthusiastic and highly motivated Research Associate is required to join an ambitious new team working in the field of human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC) biology and heart development. You will lead exciting research aimed at understanding the molecular biology of human cardiac progenitors and the determinants of cardiac cell fate, to support the development of regenerative medicine and to uncover the causes of congenital heart disease (CHD). The position is funded through a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship awarded to Dr Matthew Birket: “Understanding Cardiac Progenitors to deliver Regenerative Medicine and Disease Modelling”. The work will build on data recently reported by the Birket group: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.08.15.607916v1

This next phase of the project aims to further resolve the cell fate decisions in early cardiac development and understand the regulatory mechanisms. The role of the transcription factor HAND1 will be at the centre of these investigations. The practical element of the project will be based on the in vitro culture, manipulation, differentiation and measurement of hPSCs. Our lab uses cutting-edge technologies including single cell genomics and multiomics, CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing and CRISPR library screening, combined with 2D and 3D cardiac differentiation models and lineage tracing systems. In addition to leading their own research projects, the appointed candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the projects of several PhD students in the group. The team is dynamic and ambitious as well as being welcoming and supportive.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Visual Search

We are inviting applications for a Research Associate/Fellow position on the SBE-UKRI funded project “Looked but failed to see” errors in human vision. This project is an international collaboration between Johan Hulleman (University of Manchester, Manchester, UK) and Jeremy Wolfe (Harvard University, Boston, USA). Although the initial duration is 9 months, a further extension may become available.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on a world-leading project that aims to understand the fundamental processes of visual search and the role they play in the visual search tasks of daily life.

The post-holder will have good understanding of visual search field (essential). Prior experience with eye tracking (Eyelink) and online experimentation (JavaScript) would be an advantage. Candidates should have a PhD (or equivalent) degree in a psychological, biological, or computational science.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate – Groundwater Geochemistry
Collaboration

A Research Associate position, funded by UKRI, is available for an outstanding and ambitious environmental geochemist, environmental chemist, environmental/chemical engineer (or similar) to study groundwater chemistry, (bio)geochemical processes and remediation approaches, particularly in the context of northern India and East Africa.  This project aims to create a roadmap towards improved groundwater quality management in the context of the Global South by bringing together systematic approaches to improve the understanding of dominant groundwater processes and to support evidence-based decision-making for effective groundwater remediation.  This position is part of a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship project “AQUAROAD: Advancing Groundwater Quality in the Global South: Geochemical Processes, Remediation, Optimisation & Co-Designed Decision-Making Frameworks” (see: https://www.aquaroad.org/and MR/Y016327/1).

(10) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Computational Social Science

We seek to appoint a Research Associate on a full-time appointment for 24 months to join the Computational Social Science training team of the UK Data Service (UKDS), based at the Cathie Marsh Institute. The post will start on the 1st of April 2025. Two part-time candidates working on a job share could also be considered. 

This team specialises in upskilling social scientists in computationally intensive research methods such as machine learning, text-mining, synthetic data creation and interactive visualisations. The upskilling takes place through live training sessions (online and in-person), asynchronous learning materials and other formats such as drop-in sessions, live coding demonstrations etc.  We are seeking someone with computational social science expertise to:

(1) contribute to an UKRI-funded project led by UKDS staff to upskill global data service staff in computational social science.

(2) contribute to the UKDS computational social science training programme.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Nanomedicine

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Research Associate) in Nanomedicine post within the NanoOmics Lab in the Centre for Nanotechnology in Medicine at the University of Manchester. The post is available from 1st March 2025 and will be tenable on a fixed term basis for 12 months with the possibility to extend further for five years.

You will contribute to the European Research Council Starting Grant awarded to Dr Marilena Hadjidemetriou, focusing upon utilizing nanoparticle-enabled technology to explore the link between brain pathology and the blood proteome. You will employ a combination of ex vivo blood proteomics analysis and in vivo preclinical mouse models to discover novel liquid biopsy biomarkers for glioblastoma and Alzheimer’s disease, using our in-house nanoscale blood enrichment platform. You should be a current or prior holder of a Procedure Individual License (PIL) for in vivo work.  Demonstrable previous experience in Nanomedicine or Biomarker research in addition to expertise in histology and proteomics techniques are essential.

(17) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate (Grade 6) or Research Fellow (Grade 7) in Synchrotron X-Ray Computed Tomography

Applications are invited for experts in synchrotron X-ray tomographic (CT) techniques to join ‘Manufacturing by Design’ (MbD), a 5-year, EPSRC-funded International Centre to Centre (IC2C) collaboration project which brings together the EPSRC-funded National Research Facility for Lab X-ray CT (NXCT) with the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) and several partners in academia and industry. Our aim is to shine new light on manufacturing processes and products through developing best-in class 3D imaging. Specifically we will exploit and further develop new and upgraded beamlines at the ESRF (BM18, ID15A and ID19) to achieve a step change in the 3D imaging resolution in real components, and the changes in their micro- and macro- structure with time both during their manufacture and in service.

We invite applications for a Research Fellow (Grade 7) or Research Associate (Grade 6) to join the team dependent on experience. The post will be located within the Structure of Materials group at the ESRF, France and is available as soon as possible, fixed term to 31st March 2027. The post holder will focus on helping to develop the instrumentation, as well as the integration of environmental rigs for time lapse experiments. The appointed candidate will have expertise in handling, analysing and visualising the very large 3D datasets that BM18 (large 3D volumes), ID15A (multimodal) and ID19 (time lapse sequences) will provide.
