The goal of the first project is to investigate how youth and caregivers engage in engineering while at home. The goal of the second project is to support museum educators while they engage in professional development related to how youth deal with struggle and failure during maker programming. For both projects, the primary work will involve analysis of video data collected during the projects. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Appointee in Epigenetics and Metabolism
A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Nuria Morral, in the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics, and Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases, Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis. The successful candidate will join a NIH-funded research group studying epigenetic mechanisms of transcription regulation. The lab is studying how nutrients influence chromatin dynamics and key stages of the transcription cycle. These mechanisms are disrupted under conditions of overnutrition, contributing to insulin resistance and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The selected candidate will join a team working with mouse models of NAFLD and type 2 diabetes, using a variety of biochemical and molecular biology assays (immunoblots, qPCR, primary cell culture, cloning, virus-mediated gene transfer, high-throughput sequencing, etc).

The IU experimental nuclear physics group has an active and diverse program addressing fundamental questions in nuclear physics, particle physics, and astrophysics/cosmology. Group members are leaders in a wide range of experiments, including: investigations of the flavor and spin structure of the nucleon using the STAR detector at RHIC and Belle II at KEK; studies of parity and time reversal violation between nucleons at NIST, SNS, LANSCE, JPARC, and FRM, measurements of neutrino properties at Fermilab, SNS, SURF, and LNGS, neutron decay and neutron interferometry at NIST, LANSCE, SNS, ISIS, and ILL and searches for possible exotic spin-dependent interactions. The group is a part of the Center for the Exploration of Energy and Matter (CEEM) at IU which includes research in experimental condensed matter and theoretical nuclear physics. Group members include professional staff in electronics, mechanical engineering, cryogenic design, and machinists, as well as graduate and undergraduate students. Local facilities include a low-energy neutron source (LENS) available for neutron detector development and testing, high-bay facilities for large-scale fabrication, professional and student machine shops, a polarized 3He lab, a dilution refrigerator, and a vibration isolated lab for weak force measurement. The laboratory of Dr. Burcin Ekser, MD, PhD within the Division of Transplant Surgery and the Department of Surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine, is seeking a highly motivated and independent postdoctoral fellow to study xenotransplantation with a focus on NK cell biology, xenoimmunology, xeno-antigens, and antibodies. The Xenotransplantation Research laboratory has a great success on CRISPR-based genetic engineering of cells and pigs, such as Gal-knockout, Gal and CMAH double knockout, and Gal, CMAH, and Sda (B4GalNT2) triple knockout cell lines. More recently, the laboratory has created 5-gene knockout cells, including swine leukocyte antigen (SLA) class I. The project focuses on the identification of several signaling pathways between NK cell and its ligands and interspecies compatibility between humans and pigs. This project is supported by internal grant funding, and a NIH grant.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow – (Liver Research) Transplant Immunology Lab
The laboratory of Dr. Burcin Ekser, MD, PhD within the Division of Transplant Surgery and the Department of Surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine, is seeking a highly motivated and independent postdoctoral fellow to study liver cell biology, such as hepatocytes, liver endothelial cells, hepatic stellate cells, Kupffer cells, and cholangiocytes. The laboratory has a great success on advanced 3D liver organoids from normal and diseased livers, including all above-mentioned liver cells as primary cells. Diseased liver models include nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), alcoholic liver disease (ALD), and other rare liver diseases. Dr. Ekser’s Lab collaborates very closely with the Indiana Center of Liver Research and its world-renowned investigators Drs. Gianfranco Alpini, PhD and Heather Francis, PhD on several projects, including NASH, PSC, PBC, ALD, and hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma. The project(s) focus on the identification of several signaling pathways in the normal and abovementioned liver diseases using advanced 3D liver organoids and/or small animal-based methodologies. This project is supported by internal grant funding, foundation grants, and several NIH grants.
