We are seeking a High-Temperature Materials Processing Postdoctoral Research Associate. This position resides in the Surface Engineering and Tribology Group in the Materials Structure and Processing Section, Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Science Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
As part of our team, you will work with ORNL’s world-class experts and have access to the state-of-the-art facilities to learn, grow, and make major contributions to the exciting research activities here. You will be working with a research team led by a senior researcher to carry out the research and development of high-temperature ceramics and composites using advanced processes including but not limited to chemical vapor deposition/infiltration (CVD/CVI), polymer infiltration pyrolysis (PIP), and reactive melt infiltration. The current projects are focused on CVI/CVD and PIP of ceramic-ceramic and metal-ceramic composites. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate – Geothermal Energy Techno-Economic Analysis for Roadmap Extension
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Manufacturing Energy Efficiency Research & Analysis (MEERA) Group in the Manufacturing Science Division (MSD), Energy Science and Technology Directorate (ESTD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to work in the areas of life cycle energy impacts analysis, technoeconomic analysis, and industrial energy efficiency analysis research under the Strategic Analysis and Industrial Energy Efficiency Programs.
The MEERA Group conducts techno-economic, value chain, trade, patent, and global analyses relevant to advanced energy and manufacturing technologies. MEERA is currently supporting a multi-laboratory DOE Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) project to develop an independent, objective, and publicly available geothermal well life cycle assessment analysis. This project will conduct research into alternative geothermal well designs that can improve the life cycle value of geothermal wells, reduce costs, improve productivity, and mitigate risks. The project builds upon previous MEERA work focusing on casing and cementing activities that identified the cost of casing, cement and cement additives, and annulus area as key variables in reducing total drilling cost. This project expands the analysis to other aspects of geothermal well development including well completion, production, and abandonment phases.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate – Structural Biology, Biochemistry and Biophysics
The Diffraction Group in the Neutron Scattering Division (NSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral Protein Chemist or Structural Biologist to join a multi-disciplinary research team in development and application of paramagnetic labeling and proton polarization techniques for structure analysis! This project involves multi-task efforts in molecular biology, NMR, dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) and macromolecular crystallography, and collaboration with computational scientists developing ML and AI tools for molecular simulation and analysis. As an ORNL postdoctoral fellow you will have access to state-of-the-art facilities for isotopic labeling, biophysical characterization, and X-ray diffraction, as well as access to world class facilities for neutron diffraction and scattering, and molecular simulations! This position will allow the postdoctoral scientist to develop expertise, broaden experience and interact with a diverse set of scientists working at the ORNL’s neutron scattering and high-performance computing facilities.
Desirable skills include expertise in biological structure determination and in biophysical characterization using NMR/EPR or X-ray techniques. Additional experience in covalent modification of proteins with fluorophores or spin labels would be a distinct advantage. You will also have access to a suite of biophysical characterization tools, as well as external synchrotron facilities.

(12) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate- Microbial Synthetic
In this position, you will develop genetic engineering tools for non-model microbes, such as 1) anaerobic members of microbial communities to enable the engineering of microbes in the cow rumen, and 2) other non-model microbial organisms for the production of renewable fuels and chemicals from waste plastic or lignocellulosic biomass. Examples include development of transformation methods, development of gene expression “genetic parts”, and utilization of CRISPR-Cas and recombineering systems to enable multiplex, targeted manipulation of the genome. This project will use the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) Beam Test Facility, a front-end replica with advanced diagnostics.
