Our group focuses on research and software artifacts in highly cited journals and conferences, helping to enable bleeding edge science at scale. Our research has resulted in numerous awards and software including an R&D 100 award for the Adaptable I/O System (ADIOS), and the state of the art data reduction software, MultiGrid Adaptive Reduction of Data (MGARD). We are seeking a High-Temperature Materials Processing Postdoctoral Research Associate. This position resides in the Surface Engineering and Tribology Group in the Materials Structure and Processing Section, Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Science Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

As part of our team, you will work with ORNL’s world-class experts and have access to the state-of-the-art facilities to learn, grow, and make major contributions to the exciting research activities here. You will be working with a research team led by a senior researcher to carry out the research and development of high-temperature ceramics and composites using advanced processes including but not limited to chemical vapor deposition/infiltration (CVD/CVI), polymer infiltration pyrolysis (PIP), and reactive melt infiltration. The current projects are focused on CVI/CVD and PIP of ceramic-ceramic and metal-ceramic composites. You are expected to be independently responsible to solve technical problems for technical projects and responsible for the completion of a variety of routine technical problems.  Contributions to proposal writing and collaborations with industry and other divisions at ORNL including the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) are anticipated.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Manufacturing Energy Efficiency Research & Analysis (MEERA) Group in the Manufacturing Science Division (MSD), Energy Science and Technology Directorate (ESTD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to work in the areas of life cycle energy impacts analysis, technoeconomic analysis, and industrial energy efficiency analysis research under the Strategic Analysis and Industrial Energy Efficiency Programs.

The MEERA Group conducts techno-economic, value chain, trade, patent, and global analyses relevant to advanced energy and manufacturing technologies. MEERA is currently supporting a multi-laboratory DOE Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) project to develop an independent, objective, and publicly available geothermal well life cycle assessment analysis. This project will conduct research into alternative geothermal well designs that can improve the life cycle value of geothermal wells, reduce costs, improve productivity, and mitigate risks. The project builds upon previous MEERA work focusing on casing and cementing activities that identified the cost of casing, cement and cement additives, and annulus area as key variables in reducing total drilling cost. This project expands the analysis to other aspects of geothermal well development including well completion, production, and abandonment phases.

• Develop and evaluate new approaches to non-destructively and non-invasively measure building envelope performance.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will contribute to the development of modeling framework and support process development for advanced manufacturing (AM) processes. This position resides in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division (CSED) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Chemical and Isotopic Mass Spectrometry Group in the Chemical Sciences Division (CSD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

As a Postdoctoral Research Associate, will focus on R&D in analytical chemistry to develop and advance analytical capabilities and methodologies to support the characterization of nuclear materials associated with the nuclear fuels cycle, nuclear non-proliferation and safeguards, nuclear forensics, production of isotopes, and various application spaces. The research will focus on detailed trace element and isotopic characterizations via inorganic mass spectrometry and using a variety of elemental and isotopic approaches.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on the physics of correlated and topological quantum materials. This position resides in the Quantum Heterostructures Group in the Foundational Materials Science Section, Materials Science and Technology Division, Physical Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

As part of our research team, you will work in a highly collaborative environment with a broad spectrum of expertise, including epitaxial synthesis, quantum transport, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), neutron/x-ray scattering, and spectroscopy. You will perform cutting-edge research on correlated and topological quantum materials.

The Diffraction Group in the Neutron Scattering Division (NSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral Protein Chemist or Structural Biologist to join a multi-disciplinary research team in development and application of paramagnetic labeling and proton polarization techniques for structure analysis! This project involves multi-task efforts in molecular biology, NMR, dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) and macromolecular crystallography, and collaboration with computational scientists developing ML and AI tools for molecular simulation and analysis. As an ORNL postdoctoral fellow you will have access to state-of-the-art facilities for isotopic labeling, biophysical characterization, and X-ray diffraction, as well as access to world class facilities for neutron diffraction and scattering, and molecular simulations! This position will allow the postdoctoral scientist to develop expertise, broaden experience and interact with a diverse set of scientists working at the ORNL’s neutron scattering and high-performance computing facilities.

Desirable skills include expertise in biological structure determination and in biophysical characterization using NMR/EPR or X-ray techniques. Additional experience in covalent modification of proteins with fluorophores or spin labels would be a distinct advantage. You will also have access to a suite of biophysical characterization tools, as well as external synchrotron facilities.

In this position, you will develop genetic engineering tools for non-model microbes, such as 1) anaerobic members of microbial communities to enable the engineering of microbes in the cow rumen, and 2) other non-model microbial organisms for the production of renewable fuels and chemicals from waste plastic or lignocellulosic biomass. Examples include development of transformation methods, development of gene expression “genetic parts”, and utilization of CRISPR-Cas and recombineering systems to enable multiplex, targeted manipulation of the genome. As needed, you will delete or over express genes, validate the responsible genetic changes, characterize the impact on cell physiology, and link the genotypes to specific phenotypes of interest using Next Generation Sequencing, Systems Biology, and other approaches.

As part of our team, you will investigate the atomic and electronic structures in materials and correlate them with relevant properties for energy applications. You will utilize ORNL’s new capabilities of aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). A particular focus of the research will be to understand interfacial phenomena in catalysts or solid-state battery materials.  Advanced electron microscopy capabilities, such as 4D-STEM and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) will be integrated into in situ environment/biasing experiments. You will play an integral role in electron microscopy and closely collaborate with other scientists for synthesis, theoretical calculations, and other characterization methods, across multiple divisions at ORNL

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on developing uniform, reproducible, and controlled large-scale synthesis and transfer of 2D materials, primarily transition metal dichalcogenides and various forms of boron nitrides. Our team uses bottom-up synthesis techniques, including CVD, MOCVD, and PECVD, coupled with multiple characterization techniques to control the growth environment and material consistency across the wafer targeting applications in microelectronics and quantum information science.
