Automated medical image processing and analysis using machine learning techniques is a rapidly expanding area of research. The NIDUS (Northern Institute for Deep Learning in Ultrasound) laboratory undertakes a wide breadth of research and academic activities in this area. Reporting to the Dept. of Radiology & Diagnostic Imaging AI research chair (currently Jacob Jaremko, a Canada CIFAR AI Chair), the Research Associate plays an integral role in implementing and overseeing the full scope of research and academic activities carried out by NIDUS, at a high level as the trusted delegate and representative.

This person is required to apply extensive knowledge of research techniques in the fields of artificial intelligence and medical imaging to lead high-level, complex research activities, including the independent design of research plans and experimental approaches, and coordinating the activities of a diverse team of researchers, learners, clinicians and other stakeholders.

Reporting to Dr. Andrea Haqq, Principal Investigator, the main focus of the Post-Doctoral Fellow position will be to complete a pilot single-arm trial with the aim to explore the effect of semaglutide on energy metabolism in adults with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The specific objectives of the study are (1) describe the effects of semaglutide on total and individual energy expenditure (EE) components (i.e. basal, resting, exercise, thermic effect of food, sleeping, and macronutrient oxidation rates) in individuals with obesity and T2DM; (2) assess determinants of metabolic adaptation, including body composition and metabolomics, and if EE predicts weight-loss responders.; and (3) utilize machine learning approaches will be explored to predict expected changes in EE to evaluate intervention-induced metabolic adaptation.

The successful candidate will work with Dr. Christopher Herd to investigate the best ways to preserve samples returned from future space missions (astromaterials), especially as related to samples from Mars, using the University of Alberta Subzero Facility for Curation of Astromaterials. The successful candidate will be put forward for Collaborator membership status on the science team for the NASA Mars 2020 Perseverance rover mission and would participate in operational roles for the mission.

The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar position specializing in behavior change and digital health technologies. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary research team led by Dr. Puneeta Tandon and Dr. Ashley Hyde, with expertise in patient-informed wellness interventions in chronic disease and aging using digital health platforms. The team focuses on designing interventions to improve user engagement with digital health platforms, particularly among older adults and underserved populations. They have multiple active digital health trials in adults with chronic conditions, with a recent digital health mental health RCT (EMPOWER) completed in 825 participants.

The selected candidate will contribute significantly to advancing farm ventilation technologies, dedicating 80% of their time to innovative research, including modelling, simulation, testing HVAC systems, and draft papers. A further 10% will involve mentoring graduate and intern students and providing technical guidance under the Principal Investigator’s supervision. The remaining 10% will focus on self-directed research initiatives and the development of funding proposals.

Dr. Osmar Zaiane, professor in the Department of Computing Science and Fellow at the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii), has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral fellow to work on the research project “Machine Malfunction Prediction and Machine Adaptation using Machine Learning”. This project investigates effective means to automatically predict machine failures and strategies to adapt a malfunctioning machine to continue its mission before maintenance can be performed. The project also relates to machine adaptation to environment dynamics and human collaborators. The research applies Machine learning and Data Mining and focuses on Reinforcement Learning techniques to achieve these goals. Amii is one of three centers of excellence in the Pan-Canadian AI strategy, and is a world-renowned leader in artificial intelligence research, advancing the field of AI through ground-breaking discoveries and transformative technologies.

We are seeking applications for multiple Senior Researcher positions, available immediately for exceptionally motivated Postdoctoral Fellows or PhD students. These positions are for a 1 year term with the possibility of renewal for up to 3 years. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a pioneering project applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to the development of RNA vaccines against emerging viral threats such as Influenza, Lassa, and Orthopox viruses. 

Project Overview: This ambitious project utilizes self-amplifying RNA (saRNA) technology, which offers the potential for more potent immune responses at lower doses compared to traditional mRNA vaccines. Our approach focuses on the use of structural RNA bioinformatics to design vaccine candidates and predict the effects of viral mutations, enhancing our ability to respond rapidly to evolving pandemic threats. 

Applications are invited for appointment as a Post-doctoral Fellow in the Department of Pediatrics, to commence as soon as possible for one year, with the possibility of renewal. The appointee will have the opportunity to work with both local and national multi-disciplinary teams to enhance the healthcare outcomes of at-risk infants. The appointee will be involved in the research activities related to the Canadian Neonatal Network, Evidence-based Practice Quality Improvement, and other provincial, national and local databases. These studies are currently funded through a CIHR grant and other provincial/ local research funding. The Foundations of Robust and Trustworthy Machine Learning (FORT) lab led by Prof Nidhi Hegde has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral researcher. The FORT lab focuses on a fundamental approach to developing robust and trustworthy algorithms for machine learning. This largely applies to notions of privacy and fairness, but also to more general concepts of robustness and stability. Applications range from supervised learning to bandits to language models to image segmentation. The current open position is for a project on Distributionally Robust Optimization as applied to these themes. 

The selected candidate will be hosted in the FORT lab, in the Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta and the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii). A background in rehabilitation sciences, neuroscience, or developmental psychology is preferred.
