Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoctoral Researcher in Nanophotonics with 2D Quantum Materials

Are you a highly motivated physicist interested in a postdoctoral research position at the intersection between nanophotonics and 2D material science? The 2D Nanophotonics group within the Institute of Physics has an open position for the project “Excitonic 2D metasurfaces for active multifunctional flat optics”. The aim is to employ exciton resonances in monolayer 2D semiconductors to actively tune the optical response of metasurfaces. Optical metasurfaces offer ultra-flat and compact alternatives to conventional bulky optical elements like mirrors, lenses, and prisms. By accurate engineering of the resonant light-matter interaction of arrays of nanostructures, light can be scattered in a controlled fashion to perform an optical function. While such optical metasurfaces are nowadays highly efficient and well established, their optical function is typically static. In this (3 year-) project you will study the strong light-matter interactions of stable excitons in monolayer 2D semiconductor material and couple these materials to resonant metasurfaces. Using their combination, you will investigate the unique properties of these 2D quantum materials and use them to develop multifunctional and atomically thin optical elements with an electrically tunable optical function.

Postdoc summary/title: Two Postdocs on Digital Twin-oriented Virtual Research Environments and Infrastructure Services

We are looking for two researchers on the subject of ‘digital twins-oriented virtual research environment and infrastructure services’. The positions will be funded by the NWO project LTER-LIFE. LTER-LIFE is a large-scale research infrastructure in the making; it aims to provide a state-of-the-art e-infrastructure to study and predict how changes in climate and other human-induced pressures affect ecosystems and biodiversity. One of the grand challenges in ecology is to understand and predict how ecosystems are impacted by changes in environmental conditions, and external pressures. Predicting how complex ecosystems will behave under different scenarios requires combining empirical and observational data. To truly predict how ecosystems and landscapes will respond to current and future global change, we need to increase the availability of existing environmental long-term datasets, integrate disparate types of ecological data, and create a user-friendly and secure cloud-based digital modelling and simulation platform that can be used to link data to models and scenarios. This can be done by creating Digital Twins of entire ecosystems. A Digital Twin is “a digital replica of a living or non-living physical entity”. Building Digital Twins of ecosystems has only recently become possible as Big Data, artificial intelligence (AI) applications and analytics, advanced computing infrastructure, and the FAIR principles have been developed and made available for ecology, ecosystem restoration, and biodiversity science. This approach brings together data scientists, informaticians, and ecologists in research communities around ecosystems. Detailed information on the LTER-LIFE project can be found here.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Two Postdoctoral Researchers on AI & Politics

We are seeking for two ambitious postdoctoral researchers for the new, interdisciplinary Research Priority Area AI & Politics. As artificial intelligence (AI) diffuses through our lives, it reconfigures central aspects of politics and society as we know it. It affects political deliberation as well as how and to whom public services are delivered. It also transforms political issues into technical problems to be solved through private means, thus replacing or  democratic institutions with private interests. Fuelled by rapidly expanding automated data collection, AI is an influential tool in the hands of the powerful, while also opening novel avenues for resistance. The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences launches a Research Priority Area in ‘AI & Politics’ that will stimulate the interdisciplinary research in this field for a period of five years. The leading question for this RPA is: how does AI change contemporary politics, broadly conceived, and how is AI development and application itself shaped by political dynamics? The core team of the RPA currently consists of Claes de Vreese, Daniel Mügge, Hilde Voorveld, Theo Araujo, Petter Törnberg, and Marie Rosenkrantz Lindegaard. The postdoctoral researchers will be part of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) or the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR), depending on the profile of the candidate.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Inclusive Climate Actions in European Cities

The University of Amsterdam’s Urban Planning research group is looking for a postdoctoral researcher (3 years) to contribute to the new project “Growing Effective & Equitable Nature-based Solutions through Inclusive Climate Actions” (GREEN-INC).To enhance the transition towards climate-proof and climate-zero cities, cities have to address existing and future urban inequalities  and injustices when creating Nature-based Solutions. Both theory and practice have turned to Inclusive Climate Actions that could tackle climate change and inequalities simultaneously in cities. Yet, so far, a systematic evaluation of Inclusive Climate Actions is lacking. By comparing and contrasting cities that face different climate change impacts and patterns of urban inequalities, GREEN-INC aims to define institutional conditions under which Inclusive Climate Actions can flourish to develop just Nature-based Solutions. The candidate will assess the performance of Inclusive Climate Actions in three European cities in order to create more climate-just and climate-effective cities. To this end, the candidate will conduct empirical comparative research to examine Inclusive Climate Actions in the cities of Amsterdam, Brussels and Bucharest. In addition, the candidate will combine critical and conceptual thinking on urban environmental justice and nature-based solutions with meaningful advice for policymakers and communities. The postdoctoral researcher will be working directly with Dr Jannes Willems (GREEN-INC’s Principal Investigator), Prof Maria Kaika and Dr Mendel Giezen. The candidate will also become part of GREEN-INC’s consortium, which includes leading universities in Europe. The candidate will be embedded in the Urban Planning research group, in the Department of Geography, Planning and International Development Studies (GPIO) at the University of Amsterdam. The postdoc will become part of the Amsterdam Institute of Social Science Research (AISSR) and the Centre for Urban Studies (CUS).

(12) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Conflicted Streets in the 15 Minute City

While of critical importance to facilitate a transition to climate-neutral cities, the 15mC concept is vague and complex. To realize the potential of the 15mC concept to bring about change, there are many potential conflicts between stakeholders representing different interests and perspectives. Essentially, the 15mC concept highlights conflicts between spaces of mobility (enabling local and regional mobility, but also including space currently used for parked vehicles), and spaces of place (emphasising urban qualities that make people want to live in such places). Therefore, conflict over the use of space is a key issue that has to be addressed in planning for the 15mC. In many cases, such conflicts cannot be solved in consensus-oriented approaches to planning and decision-making. A key goal for this project is to learn and build knowledge on planning practices and processes acknowledging the political and contested nature of such processes of change. This proposal is an important step in building knowledge about what generates conflicts in plans for the 15-minute city, and developing guidance on how to deal with such conflicts. The candidate will develop a theoretical framework for the research in the consortium and aid in the mapping and analysis of conflicts in the participating cities. Next to this the candidate will participate in tactical urbanism projects that focus on new implementations of the 15mC concept in the case studies. A key role for the UvA and the candidate is also in the final synthesis and dissemination work.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc on In-band Network-wide Telemetry in 6G Networks

Deep network programmability, that is the ability to program the network fabric both vertically (control and data plane) and horizontally (end to end), is expected to characterize the new generation of mobile networks (6G) towards supporting extreme performance requirements and service-specific operations. To this end, enriching next-generation mobile networks with data plane programming capabilities can bring significant benefits with regards to network monitoring and telemetry analysis. In-band network telemetry (INT) can help correlate observed application/network performance degradation with network bottlenecks, short-lived congestion events, routing misconfigurations, or highly utilized network nodes and links. The objective of the post-doc appointment is to investigate in-band network telemetry (INT) solutions for evolving 6G systems with attention to 6G-optical integration. In this context, INT should support the collection of accurate end-to-end network state and QoS/QoE parameters, to support (proactive) network adaptation and near real time control.  Thus, new approaches and technologies will be developed and demonstrated for collecting, intelligently aggregating (e.g., using including autoencoders and other ML-based techniques) and processing monitoring information originated by user equipment and terminals, programmable HW-accelerated network elements, edge computing resources, and applications. Envisioned solutions should provide high monitoring accuracy along with low and fixed transmission overhead and ensure scalability/performance. This research will be carried out as part of longstanding collaboration with CIENA, and it will result in joint demonstrators, proof-of-concepts and articles at suitable international conferences, such as Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibition (OFC), ACM SIGCOMM, SuperComputing (SC), and in high impact journals. Testbeds available for this work are FABRIC, CENI (Ciena environment for network innovation) and BRIDGES, which all have an international node located at the premises of the University of Amsterdam.  Additional facilities will be provided as part of the UvA participation in the SLICES-RI initiative.
