Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in Energy and Macroeconomics
Would you like to further your career by applying your quantitative energy and economic skills at one of the UK’s leading research-intensive Universities? Do you have an ability to find new insights to urgent global issues, such as the economic implications of reducing energy use, the material requirements of the global energy transition, or the links between economic growth and energy efficiency? If so, this could be the opportunity for you.
The job opportunity is to work as a Post-doctoral Research Fellow on two, related research projects: “Impacts of green growth and degrowth pathways using societal exergy analysis” and “Dynamic Modelling of the needs and potentials of the Earth’s mineral and energy resources for the period 2050”.
Meeting the 2015 Paris Agreement’s ambition relies heavily on reducing global energy use through increased energy efficiency, and also switching to renewables-based energy systems, which will require significant critical materials. At the same time mainstream models assume continued economic growth. The strong link between the economy and energy and material consumption, as well as the needed development of alternative economic (e.g. post-growth and degrowth) pathways translates to an urgent need for new modelling approaches and investigation.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in Transport and Health Economics
We are looking for an enthusiastic and agile post-doctoral Research Fellow to work on the Healthy Low-carbon Transport Hub, an UKRI/MRC funded initiative. The HLTH has been established to lead research into the potential to maximise the health benefits of low-carbon transport. Accelerated transport decarbonisation is essential if the UK is to meet statutory greenhouse gas (CO2e) emissions targets. Historically, CO2e emissions reduction measures have not systemically considered physical and mental health impacts, or inequalities in their distribution. The new Hub will identify barriers, incentives and accelerants to implementing healthy low-carbon transport schemes and propose and evaluate new solutions towards maximising health co-benefits and reducing health inequalities associated with low-carbon transport interventions.

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have an established background in hydrology, hydraulics and climate modelling? Do you want to work in a trans-disciplinary research group incorporating expertise in biology, animal physiology and physical geography?
Based in the School of Geography, you will contribute to the research project ‘Sink or Swim- threats to earthworm diversity due to flooding’ funded by the Leverhulme Trust. The project seeks to determine the impact of increased soil water content and decreased oxygen levels due to flooding on earthworm behaviour and survival, and the implications of increased flooding frequency on earthworm communities. In collaboration with specialists in biology and animal physiology, the project will determine whether there is a significant threat to future earthworm communities, and by extension- healthy soils, owing to climate change related increases in flood extent frequency and duration.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in Impact of Fluid-Induced Forces on Protein Stability
Do you have experience of developing and quantifying small-scale fluid-based devices? Do you want to use your experience to support developing the next generation of protein-based medicines? Do you want to further your career by working on a multidisciplinary project spanning engineering and biology in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive universities?
This position supports the recently awarded EPSRC award titled EMBeDs: Ensuring Manufacturability of next-generation Biopharmaceuticals by Design. The project has been designed through careful collaboration between the University of Leeds and two industrial partners (Astra Zeneca and UCB) who are actively involved in developing the next generation of biopharmaceutical medicines. These are protein based, and there is a need to identify successful candidates that are both effective against the target disease but are also robust molecules that can survive the rigours of manufacturing.
We have a long track record of developing novel devices for assessing the stability of proteins in relation to hydrodynamic forces (e.g. PNAS) – and more recently shown that the measurements are unique amongst a much broader portfolio of tests that are carried out on candidate molecules. The focus of this work strand will be to develop new approaches to stressing proteins in a controlled manner.
