The Nutrition and Lifestyle Analytics team are based between the School of Food Science and Nutrition and the interdisciplinary setting of the Leeds Institute for Data Analytics, working closely alongside the Consumer Data Research Centre (CDRC). 

A Research Fellow is required to work on a major project, funded by the IGD (Institute of Grocery Distribution) – a social impact organisation – to evaluate the impact interventions to promote healthier and more sustainable diets in food retail. The Research Fellow will analyse customer sales/loyalty card data in combination with the nutrition/health metrics and sustainability indicators. The programme works with the IGD and their 20 retailer and manufacturer working group members, who are implementing consumer behaviour change interventions. This post involves assessing the impact of war debris in urban spaces and providing solutions for remediation. The ideal candidate will be experienced in environmental engineering, experimental analyses and managing and analysing data as well as the writing of scientific/technical publications and reports. The job opportunity is to work as a Post-doctoral Research Fellow on two, related research projects: “Impacts of green growth and degrowth pathways using societal exergy analysis” and “Dynamic Modelling of the needs and potentials of the Earth’s mineral and energy resources for the period 2050”.

Meeting the 2015 Paris Agreement’s ambition relies heavily on reducing global energy use through increased energy efficiency, and also switching to renewables-based energy systems, which will require significant critical materials. At the same time mainstream models assume continued economic growth. The strong link between the economy and energy and material consumption, as well as the needed development of alternative economic (e.g. post-growth and degrowth) pathways translates to an urgent need for new modelling approaches and investigation. 

As a Research Fellow in Railway Power System Modelling, you will join an exciting consortium to accelerate the journey to transport decarbonisation by developing networked energy hubs for, potentially, as many as over 2,500 railway stations and depots across the UK, and extend the technology to road, ports and airports. You will be improving efficiency and supporting transport electrification with networked railway energy hubs, while offering greater flexibility to support both transport and grid operation. The project will explore the commercial opportunities to adopt and scale up networked energy hubs as virtual power plants to deliver creative, predictable, and cost-effective use of electric power on the transport while offering flexibility services to the power grid.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and agile post-doctoral Research Fellow to work on the Healthy Low-carbon Transport Hub, an UKRI/MRC funded initiative. The HLTH has been established to lead research into the potential to maximise the health benefits of low-carbon transport. Accelerated transport decarbonisation is essential if the UK is to meet statutory greenhouse gas (CO2e) emissions targets. Historically, CO2e emissions reduction measures have not systemically considered physical and mental health impacts, or inequalities in their distribution. The new Hub will identify barriers, incentives and accelerants to implementing healthy low-carbon transport schemes and propose and evaluate new solutions towards maximising health co-benefits and reducing health inequalities associated with low-carbon transport interventions.

We are looking to appoint a Grade 7 (Research Fellow) in Health Economics and Health Data Science to contribute to recently funded research projects in the Academic Unit of Health Economics (AUHE), Leeds Institute of Health Sciences. The post is available immediately and is for three years in the first instance. However, AUHE has an excellent track record in securing the funding required to extend research post contracts.

The Priestley Centre is the University of Leeds’ cross-institutional climate research, innovation and learning centre. Following a successful pilot, the Priestley Centre is forming an expanded Climate Evidence Unit (CEU) to provide independent, robust and timely evidence aimed at supporting and challenging decision makers in their efforts to advance rapid decarbonisation of societies and build climate resilience. The CEU is delivering both policy-facing outputs and events, and externally-funded contract work for public, private and third sector organisations, providing the functions of both a policy unit and a business unit. In doing so, the CEU draws on University of Leeds research and expertise to produce targeted and publicly available outputs in the form of rapid evidence reviews, policy analysis, scenario modelling, specialised reports and briefings that fulfil policy needs (policy unit). Alongside this, the CEU is also bidding for and delivering externally-commissioned and contracted work such as evidence synthesis reports, peer-review of products and services, expert advice, consultancy and contract research (business unit).

Geosolutions Leeds is seeking a highly motivated and experience geoscientist to assess the subsurface for potential sites for hydrogen storage in Permian salt caverns on the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS).

The role is based at Geosolutions Leeds, an exciting new strategic investment by the University of Leeds as part of its Climate Plan, supporting the refocusing of research.  Geosolutions Leeds brings together world-leading expertise in geology, engineering and social science to deliver an integrated systems approach to energy geoscience that will meet Net Zero goals.

The successful candidate will work with Dr Charlotte Botter and Dr Adam McArthur utilising a large 3D seismic dataset, well and core data from the Central and Southern North Sea offshore Yorkshire. In addition, they will test suitability of Permian salt samples to assess their rock mechanics and potential leakage risks.

This position supports the recently awarded EPSRC award titled EMBeDs: Ensuring Manufacturability of next-generation Biopharmaceuticals by Design. The project has been designed through careful collaboration between the University of Leeds and two industrial partners (Astra Zeneca and UCB) who are actively involved in developing the next generation of biopharmaceutical medicines. These are protein based, and there is a need to identify successful candidates that are both effective against the target disease but are also robust molecules that can survive the rigours of manufacturing. 

We have a long track record of developing novel devices for assessing the stability of proteins in relation to hydrodynamic forces (e.g. PNAS) – and more recently shown that the measurements are unique amongst a much broader portfolio of tests that are carried out on candidate molecules. The focus of this work strand will be to develop new approaches to stressing proteins in a controlled manner.
