(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Sorghum Genetics

This is an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to focus their efforts on developing their expertise and emerging research profile in their discipline. At this level it is expected that the incumbent will contribute to service and engagement roles and activities. The selected applicant will work as part of a large multi-party research project focused on reducing lodging risk in sorghum, funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation in partnership with Advanta Seeds and the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. This project will use multi-disciplinary approaches to increase stalk strength and reduce lodging in sorghum. This project will combine physiological trait dissection, high throughput phenotypic screening, genome wide association mapping and genomic prediction, and will make use of a suite of existing large-scale genetic and genomics resources developed for sorghum. The project aims to apply new methods of genomic selection to generate a range of applied outcomes which will result in reduced losses and increased genetic gain for yield for farmers. In addition, there will be ample opportunity for publication and student supervision.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will assist in implementing an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project – Reducing global tourism carbon emissions, with a focus on applying economic and environmental modelling and optimisation analysis to construct a global tourism carbon emissions database. The Research Fellow will carry out a significant role in (1) estimating tourism carbon emissions for 160 countries using the input-output model, and (2) identifying major drivers, trade-offs, and environmental costs for tourism development in individual countries based on the decomposition analysis.
