The Virginia Household Water Quality Program (VAHWQP) is a Virginia Cooperative Extension program that is operated through the Biological Systems Engineering (BSE) department. VAHWQP provides confidential water testing and educates private water supply users (clientele) through drinking water clinics. Faculty in BSE, working with local VAHWQP-trained Virginia Cooperative Extension agents, coordinate drinking water clinics in at least 60 counties per year. The position described herein creates value by providing logistical and analytical support for VAHWQP and is critical to the day-to-day operation of VAHWQP.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Associate

A postdoctoral associate (1-1.5 years in duration) with a passion for conservation science and/or social-ecological science is sought to contribute to a social-ecological study of sea level rise and land use decisions. The postdoctoral associate will be co-mentored by Drs. Ashley Dayer (social scientist) and Elizabeth Hunter (ecologist) at Virginia Tech and be part of their dynamic labs, as well as part of a project team with a remote sensing professor and PhD student. The Vargas-Muñiz Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at Virginia Tech seeks a Postdoctoral Associate in Medical Mycology and Fungal Cell Biology. The Vargas-Muñiz Lab studies the human fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus. The Vargas-Muñiz Lab uses genetics, cell biology, microscopy, proteomics, immunological, and in vivo approaches to understand how A. fumigatus causes infection and responds to antifungals. The lab’s goal is to provide fundamental insight that could guide the development of new antifungal interventions. This position is for onsite work.

The successful candidate will have the unique opportunity to contribute to an NIAID-funded project. This project aims to understand how the fungal septin cytoskeleton contributes to the fungal response to anti-cell wall drugs. Specifically, the candidate will explore the possible interaction of the septin cytoskeleton with other stress signaling pathways.

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Associate

Looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated postdoctoral associate to join the Kehn-Hall Lab! The Kehn-Hall lab performs research on emerging viruses, including Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV), Venezuelan equine encephalitic virus (VEEV), and eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV). The candidate will be responsible for performing cutting edge research to identify FDA approved drugs that can be repurposed for viruses with pandemic potential. This includes working closely with computer scientists to utilize published “omics” datasets and machine learning approaches to identify FDA approved drugs that target key dysregulated pathways/proteins in virally infected cells. The candidate will also assist with the development of liver and/or brain organoid cultures including iPSC-based organoids. Candidate FDA approved drugs will be tested using organoid systems and animal models of infection. The initial focus will be on RVFV, but may be extended to other emerging viruses. The research project is highly collaborative and multidisciplinary involving virologists, computer scientists, and chemical engineers. The candidate, one of six new postdoctoral fellows to be hired within the newly NSF-funded COMPASS Center, will have the opportunity to collaborate with other scientists within the center to tackle complex cross-disciplinary problems in the prevention and control of emerging viruses with pandemic and epidemic potentials.

A new position for a postdoctoral research associate is available in the Center for Ecosystem Forecasting at Virginia Tech, co-supervised by Professors Quinn Thomas and Cayelan Carey. The Center is a vibrant, highly collaborative, interdisciplinary research team working on ecological forecasting at Virginia Tech. This onsite position will be at the nexus of many ongoing funded water quality forecasting projects and will provide hands-on training and many opportunities for communicating forecasts and research findings via peer-reviewed publications. Depending on the interests of the successful candidate, research activities could include: generating water quality forecasts with data from the Virginia Reservoirs LTREB (Long-Term Research in Environmental Biology; ltreb-reservoirs.org), NEON (National Ecological Observatory Network), and/or GLEON (Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network) and a suite of process and machine learning models; coupling catchment and lake models to build new forecasting workflows; integrating remote sensing data into lake and reservoir forecasts; developing software and/or cyberinfrastructure to support forecasting; and working closely to co-develop forecasts with a range of end users (including water managers, policy-makers, and community members). The position start date will be flexible, aiming for spring 2025 but later is also possible. Funding is available for at least two years, contingent upon a successful one-year review.

We anticipate opening up to two postdoctoral research positions in the Alaska Observatory funded by the Department of Defense. Each appointment will be for 2 years, with the possibility of an extension of an additional year, depending on performance. Following are some of the tasks anticipated to be undertaken by the postdoc
1. InSAR Data Processing and Analysis:
o Lead the acquisition and processing of spaceborne Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) data.
o Develop and apply advanced multitemporal InSAR techniques to monitor land subsidence and uplift with millimetric precision.
o Integrate InSAR data with Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) measurements for high-resolution deformation mapping.
2. Infrastructure and Hazard Mapping:
o Generate maps of infrastructure vulnerability and coastal inundation risks using InSAR-derived subsidence data.
o Assist in creating infrastructure damage exposure models, particularly focusing on permafrost degradation and its impact on DoD assets.
3. Coastal Inundation Risk Projection:
o Perform inundation modeling using coastal subsidence rates, sea-level rise projections, and high-resolution LiDAR topographic data.
4. Groundwater Storage and flow modeling:
o Use InSAR and hydrogeological data in combination with poromechanical models to estimate groundwater storage and flow changes.
5. Data Validation and Benchmarking:
o Validate subsidence models using independent GNSS observations and assess the accuracy of deformation maps.
6. Dissemination of Results:
o Prepare publications and presentations for national and international conferences.
o Collaborate with DoD personnel and stakeholders to ensure the effective application of the developed tools and data.
