PhD position summary/title: PhD Student in Data-Driven Policy Optimization for Transportation and Energy

Our energy and transportation systems are rapidly transforming in the fight against climate change. Policymakers need new tools to help balance the transition’s big-picture objectives with the systems’ impacts on people and communities.

This project will contribute new tools and insights for the optimal design of policies that affect electric vehicle (EV) charging and the electricity system. The PhD student will contribute to the development of exciting new methods that integrate machine learning with energy system optimization to make such policy optimization possible.

The analysis will include policies for EV adoption, EV charging infrastructure, and electricity pricing, considering both system-level impacts on cost and CO2 emissions and community-level impacts like improvements in air pollution.

PhD position summary/title: PhD positions in global biodiversity policy and planning

Achieving global biodiversity targets will require not only sound ecological knowledge but also an understanding how political, institutional, and socioeconomic structures and dynamics shape conservation and restoration actions and outcomes. These PhD projects will address two complementary research areas critical to designing effective, durable, and just strategies for biodiversity action:

PhD Position 1 will focus on the political drivers of durable biodiversity policy. The project aims to understand how governance structures, policy stability, and geopolitical risk influence the implementation and persistence of biodiversity commitments. This work will involve the analysis of global political and environmental data and will include engagement with ongoing international biodiversity policy processes to connect empirical findings with current governance challenges.

PhD Position 2 will focus on strategic spatial planning for biodiversity under uncertainty, with particular attention to how conservation and restoration efforts can be integrated into landscapes also used for agriculture, forestry, and climate change mitigation. The research will develop and apply computational approaches to identify policy strategies that are politically feasible and compatible with changing land-use demands, while also considering the distributional impacts of conservation decisions and their implications for environmental justice.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Water Disinfection Chemistry

Applications are invited for a PhD position on Water Disinfection Chemistry in the Environmental Chemistry group at ETH Zurich. The project focuses on the recent discovery of chloronitramide, a disinfection byproduct formed during the decomposition of chloramines and will be supervised by Dr. Juliana Laszakovits in the group of Prof. Kristopher McNeill.

Chloronitramide was recently reported by our group to be a novel disinfection byproduct. It is formed through the autodecomposition of chloramine, a widely used drinking water disinfectant and was found in all tested chloraminated drinking water samples at levels between 1 and 180 ppb. There are no previous reports of chloronitramide and accordingly nothing is known about its toxicity or occurrence.

The overarching goals of this project are (1) to improve monitoring efforts by developing widely accessible analytical approaches to quantify chloronitramide and (2) to investigate the impact of common water quality parameters on chloronitramide formation mechanisms during drinking water treatment. The results of this work are expected to inform risk assessment and regulation of chloronitramide and to guide water treatment utilities in managing its formation.

PhD position summary/title: PHD Position in Planning Transport Systems under Uncertain Futures through Agent-Based Simulations and Reinforcement learning

This doctorate aims to advance the state-of-the-art of model-based planning support for transport and urban systems under uncertainty. The doctorate will develop new tools and methods that integrate large-scale agent-based modelling, surrogate modelling, scenario planning, and sequential decision analytics. The research conducted during the doctorate will improve the long-term planning of urban and transport systems in Switzerland in close collaboration with the Center for Sustainable Future Mobility (CSFM) and the Chair of Risk, Safety and Uncertainty Quantification at ETH Zürich. The main contributions of this research will be: 1) integrate both qualitative foresight scenario planning and quantitative scenario simulation workflows; 2) develop new spatially explicit surrogate models that enable the use of large-scale agent-based models for the simulation of a wide range of future scenarios, and 3) advance the use of sequential decision analytics (e.g., reinforcement learning or stochastic optimisation) for the identification of optimal adaptive plans.

The case study to be used in the research is the transport system of Switzerland, where detailed MATSim agent-based models exist at the regional (e.g., Zurich, Lausanne, Geneva) and national levels. Potential interventions to be evaluated include, but are not limited to, the expansion or repurposing of road, rail, and cycling infrastructure, mobility on-demand services, mobility hubs, and pricing schemes. The project will help tackle pressing questions such as how emerging transport modes, spatial development, and evolving travel behaviour might shape Switzerland’s mobility system by 2060. These methods will allow key actors in Switzerland to identify critical risks, uncover novel opportunities, and co-create strategies that remain effective under uncertain future conditions.

PhD position summary/title: Ph.D. position in atmospheric biogeochemical modeling

We are seeking a highly motivated and curious Ph.D. student to join the Inorganic Environmental Geochemistry group at ETH Zurich and Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, an interdisciplinary team of researchers studying biogeochemical cycles of trace elements across different environmental compartments. Our mission is to understand and predict environmental distributions of health-impacting trace elements to prevent health hazards, today and in the future. The position is offered in the framework of a recently funded SNSF project with the goal to improve our understanding of the atmospheric cycling of the essential micronutrient selenium (Se) by integrating measurements and a computational atmospheric Se model. Knowing the chemical forms (speciation) of Se in atmospheric wet and dry deposition fluxes is essential because it determines its fate in surface environments, i.e., its mobility, bioavailability for plant uptake and, ultimately, its health impact. This knowledge is key for developing sustainable management strategies to ensure adequate and safe levels of Se, in agricultural systems as well as in other ecosystems.

PhD position summary/title: Ph.D. positions in ocean ecological/biogeochemical modeling

Ph.D. position 1:

The first of the two doctoral students will work primarily on the marine nitrogen cycle and how it is affected by extreme conditions. The focus will be on the production, consumption and outgassing of nitrous oxide (N2O), a very potent greenhouse gas. But we will be looking also at several other processes governing the marine nitrogen cycle, including N2-fixation, denitrification, and anammox, and how they respond to extremes associated with heat (marine heatwaves), low oxygen and/or high acidity. The work, involving models and observations, will start in the oxygen deficient waters of the eastern tropical Pacific, where a large portion of the marine N2O is emitted into the atmosphere, but we plan to extend this also to other regions of the world.

Ph.D. position 2:

The second doctoral student will work on the improvement of zooplankton processes in our models, focusing on their role in structuring the phytoplankton community and in governing the efficiency of the biological carbon pump. The student will further study food-web interactions and transfer of matter across trophic levels. An essential component will be the assessment of the model results with observations, as well the use of the models to design improved observational strategies. The work will focus on the Southern Ocean, but with an eye toward the application of this improved model across the global ocean.
