PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Experimental Physics with focus on Space Physics
Mercury is a fundamentally unique object in the solar system. It possesses a weak global magnetic field internal origin, and in consequence, a small magnetosphere much smaller than the magnetosphere of Earth. Due to the proximity of Mercury to the Sun, the magnetosphere of Mercury is subject to the most intense solar wind flux and ferocious space weather among all the planets in the solar system. Moreover, Mercury has a very large electrically conducting iron-rich core that occupies a much higher fraction of the planet’s mass and volume than do the cores of other planets in our solar system. Therefore, electromagnetic induction effects in the planetary interior play a more prominent role in the small magnetosphere of Mercury compared to any of its companions. The purpose of the PhD project is to provide a comprehensive understanding on the complex magnetosphere-interior coupling at Mercury, and to explore the dynamics of this coupled system during extreme solar events (e.g., Coronal Mass Ejections) using state-of-the-art hybrid model of plasma.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Experimental Physics with focus on Space Physics
The supersonic solar wind blows through the solar system. Earth is partly protected by the bow shock, but fast plasma flows can still penetrate the magnetosheath. Such magnetosheath jets (dynamic pressure enhancements) can impact the magnetopause and cause geoeffective disturbances due to their excess energy and momentum. However, it is not known how strong such space weather disturbances can be and if they may be harmful. To fill in the gap, in the PhD project we will determine for example the impact rates of jets, and how much energy and momentum the jets transfer.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in industrial design
In many human cultures, people use their hands to prepare food, knead dough, wipe the bowl, lick their fingers, pass ingredients, and otherwise share and consume food. This embodied engagement with the materiality of food not only nourishes our bodies, but it nurtures and transmits culture(s) and shapes who we are. It also adds taste and entangles people’s microbiomes. Such cultural practices are rich and have been part of human identity since time immemorial. However, their impact on what it might mean to be human in a time of climate instability and loss, and the great work of societal transition that stands before us, remains under explored. This PhD will undertake design-led research at the intersection of food, embodiment, design and cultures – both human and non-human. It will investigate the roles that food might play in strengthening the bonds between human cultures and the rest of nature.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in industrial design
Under the focus area of “sustainability and grassroots communities”, there are a number of emerging concerns for industrial design. In a digitalising society, networked and computational technologies are altering the ways things are made and shared, even becoming new infrastructures for design. Changes in patterns of production and consumption indicate new ways people are engaging in design and technology development, from distributed manufacturing to peer-to-peer production, extending also to platform co-ops and experiments in postcapitalist organising. In such industrial transitions, there is potential for exploring what inclusive, “just” and environmentally sustainable practices and lifeways can look like, practices that acknowledge human embeddedness in webs of life. This presents opportunities to engage in research working with practices of making and design experimentation oriented toward sustainability transformation and imaginative, hopeful diverse design futures.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in computational science and engineering (CSE) with a specialization in mathematics
The evolution of multicellular organisms has fundamentally shaped the biosphere by giving rise to complex forms of life that can operate across tremendous scales. Yet, not all forms of multicellularity are the same: some have hundreds of types of cells arranged in intricate body plans, while others are simple balls of undifferentiated cells. Though there may not be a single feature explaining such differences in complexity, one striking candidate is the presence/absence of a developmental program. Developmental programs connect the function of cells or the expression of phenotypes to information and thus enable the construction of elaborate structures from a single template. The field of evolutionary developmental biology has revealed how changes to developmental programs can produce diverse types of multicellular life, but this requires the a priori existence of some type of development program. We do not know how such multicellular developmental programs originate, and tackling this problem is the purpose of this Swedish Research Council-funded PhD position. The PhD student will address this problem using a variety of mathematical modeling techniques, including systems of differential equations and evolutionary simulations. The proposed work will feature interdisciplinary projects as part of a collaborative team.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in ecology, with focus on aquatic microbial ecology
The deoxygenation of coastal systems and estuaries has strong implications for ecosystem function by reducing suitable zones for fish nurseries and causing shifts in global carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus fluxes. While the oxygen inventory of the global ocean has declined by 2.7 % since 1960, an additional decline of up to 7 % has been projected to the end of 21st century. The aim of this project is to study the consequences of coastal deoxygenation on microbial processes and related ecosystem services. We will study how deoxygenation impacts the contribution of coastal systems to biogeochemical cycles, with a focus on anaerobic respiration and anaerobic photosynthesis including how this enhances contamination of food webs by neurotoxic methylmercury via mercury methylation.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Computing Science with focus on Sustainable Algorithmic Solutions
In this project, Roman Iakymchuk leads the work on algorithmic development and enhancements for the consortium CFD applications. Our focus is on assuring sustainability and numerical reliability in linear algebra kernels and operations occurring in the consortium codes due to the fact that these properties are either violated or simply ignored under the parallel and cross-architectural executions. Thanks to the usage of various auto-tuning and performance optimization strategies, these algorithms would guarantee high performance but also cross-architectures performance portability, which is a difficult task in HPC. This together with mixed-precision schemes, supported by arithmetic tools, would not only boost performance but also would ensure energy-efficient computing. We aim at delivering comparable accuracy of the results as in the original precision and to wisely use the resources, yielding in sustainable algorithmic solutions.
