PhD position summary/title: PhD position in ecology with focus on interactions between terrestrial plants and water chemistry in boreal streams
Aquatic ecosystems are fueled by terrestrial organic matter in the form of riparian plant litter and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) inputs. In the boreal region, intensive forest management with focus on coniferous monocultures is altering riparian plant species composition and productivity. In addition, the boreal region is already experiencing higher temperatures and altered patterns in precipitation and terrestrial runoff due to climate change. This inevitably leads to changes in quantity and quality of terrestrial organic matter input to streams. As these changes are projected to continue, there is a need to understand how they will interact to influence the role of terrestrial organic matter in aquatic systems and, thus, the ecosystem functions that these systems provide. The aim of this project is therefore to study and quantify how the riparian plant community composition influences carbon uptake by microbes in streams and how this, in turn, may be influenced by the quantity and quality of DOC. This project will thereby advance our understanding of how land use and climate change impact the ecological functioning of boreal streams.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Mathematical Statistics
What are the effects of climate change on the diversity of land birds? How many fur seals remain in Antarctica after breeding season? Do flies transmit the ‘bee’ parasite on flowers during defecation? Statistics is there to answer these big-scale and small-scale questions and to understand the world around us, each other and ourselves. When analyzing the relationships between a response and predictors, it might be natural to assume that some relationships obey certain shape constraints, such as monotonicity and convexity.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Computing Science with focus on Interaction with Autonomous Systems
Knowing when full autonomy will fail and collaboration with others is needed to successfully execute a task, is a fundamental ability for humans to ensure efficiency, safety, and even survival. This ability is equally important for autonomous systems, such as robots or self-driving vehicles. Such systems operate in our public or private spaces. There, they will often be faced with ill-defined or ambiguous human requests, in particular if the human interaction partner is naïve with respect to the system’s capabilities and inner workings. The systems’ success will depend as much on users’ trust and willingness to cooperate as it will on the systems’ technological and engineering capabilities. A crucial part of this will be the systems’ ability to cope with misunderstandings, ambiguity, and errors in perception of the environment around them, in reasoning about a given situation, and in interaction with human users. The aim of this project is to develop mechanisms that allow for automatically identifying such conflicts and to devise strategies that allow for resolving them. These strategies are then to be evaluated in human-subject studies.

PhD position summary/title: The PhD position in Energy Technology – Solar thermal energy production
Solar energy is an important renewable energy resource that can be used for different thermal applications such as space and water heating in residential buildings. To integrate solar energy in district heating systems (DHSs) medium-high temperatures are needed that could be achieved with a concentrating solar thermal collector even in high latitude regions such as the Nordic countries. Such integration could contribute to decarbonizing our society by replacing biomass- and fossil-based energy resources in the Swedish DHS and to enhance energy security. The scope of this call for new PhD students is to use system approach to investigate the environmental effects and the economic effects of integrated solar thermal in the Swedish DHSs.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Applied Physics with focus on vibrational spectroscopic imaging of cells
The Applied Optics group (https://www.umu.se/en/research/groups/als/) at Umeå University is looking for an outstanding PhD candidate interested in developing mid-infrared photothermal microscopy for fast chemical imaging of fatty acids in living cells.
Fatty acids are a group of lipids with important cellular functions, including energy production, energy storage and signalling, to control cell proliferation and metabolism. Inside cells, fatty acids can form lipid droplets, whose size, number and dynamics are related to the cell state. Uptake and metabolism of fatty acids occur fast and are tightly regulated in healthy cells. If deregulated, lipid signalling contributes to inflammation, cancer and metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. Exactly how fatty acids enter cells and form lipid droplets is still poorly understood, mainly due to the lack of non-invasive imaging techniques that simultaneously provide high speed, sensitivity and spatial resolution.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Experimental Physics with focus on Space Physics
The ‘Space Plasma Physics’ group at Umeå University is looking for a brilliant PhD candidate interested in performing research on 3D magnetosheath jet properties. The PhD project combines the analysis of data from state-of-the art plasma simulations with the analysis of data from state-of-the art satellites orbiting Earth.
The supersonic solar wind blows through the solar system. Earth is partly protected by the bow shock, but fast plasma flows can still penetrate the magnetosheath. Such magnetosheath jets (dynamic pressure enhancements) can impact the magnetopause and cause geoeffective disturbances due to their excess energy and momentum. However, it is not known how strong such space weather disturbances can be and if they may be harmful. To fill in the gap, in the PhD project we will determine for example the impact rates of jets, and how much energy and momentum the jets transfer.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in industrial design
The PhD student will join a vibrant educational environment, characterised by combinations of collaborative and individual research and a supervisory team supporting them throughout the program.
In many human cultures, people use their hands to prepare food, knead dough, wipe the bowl, lick their fingers, pass ingredients, and otherwise share and consume food. This embodied engagement with the materiality of food not only nourishes our bodies, but it nurtures and transmits culture(s) and shapes who we are. It also adds taste and entangles people’s microbiomes. Such cultural practices are rich and have been part of human identity since time immemorial. However, their impact on what it might mean to be human in a time of climate instability and loss, and the great work of societal transition that stands before us, remains under explored. This PhD will undertake design-led research at the intersection of food, embodiment, design and cultures – both human and non-human. It will investigate the roles that food might play in strengthening the bonds between human cultures and the rest of nature.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in industrial design
Under the focus area of “sustainability and grassroots communities”, there are a number of emerging concerns for industrial design. In a digitalising society, networked and computational technologies are altering the ways things are made and shared, even becoming new infrastructures for design. Changes in patterns of production and consumption indicate new ways people are engaging in design and technology development, from distributed manufacturing to peer-to-peer production, extending also to platform co-ops and experiments in postcapitalist organising. In such industrial transitions, there is potential for exploring what inclusive, “just” and environmentally sustainable practices and lifeways can look like, practices that acknowledge human embeddedness in webs of life. This presents opportunities to engage in research working with practices of making and design experimentation oriented toward sustainability transformation and imaginative, hopeful diverse design futures.
