PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Molecular Engineering of MOFs for Selective Methane Oxidation
Are you interested in developing new materials for cleaner chemical processes? The Reactions in Confined Space group at the University of Amsterdam, led by Assistant Professor Bettina Baumgartner, is looking for a motivated PhD candidate to work on an innovative project aimed at converting methane into methanol at room temperature.
The goal of this position is to design and study iron-based porous materials that can activate oxygen and selectively oxidize methane under mild conditions without over-oxidizing it to CO2. As part of this project, you will synthesize and characterize metal-organic frameworks, test their catalytic performance, and use spectroscopic methods to investigate the underlying mechanisms. You will work in a supportive and international research environment, and contribute to a project that combines fundamental science with practical relevance for sustainable chemistry.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position on Dynamical Models Learning for 3D Cell Imaging Data
Live-cell 3D microscopy is revealing biology at a breathtaking spatio-temporal scale, but today’s object trackers still struggle with dense scenes, extreme shape changes and hour-long recordings. Our new project brings together cutting-edge imaging at the Princess Máxima Imaging Center with state-of-the-art visual-tracking research in the Video & Image Sense Lab to solve this bottleneck.
We will develop an unsupervised or semi-supervised, end-to-end cell tracker that links every pixel belonging to the same cell across space and time, automatically adapts to complex deformations and recognises functional patterns such as T-cell serial killing in solid-tumour organoids. By delivering accurate, long-term trajectories we open the door to quantitative “cell-centric representations” that can drive both fundamental discovery and next-generation immunotherapies.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position on Causal Multimodal Foundation Models
This PhD project addresses these limitations by focusing on causal exploration, enabling agents to actively seek out informative interventions in order to learn the underlying structure of their environment. Rather than relying solely on passive data, the agent will experiment, hypothesize, and test causal relationships to construct more robust and transferable world models. This active, structured approach to learning is crucial for collecting fine-tuning data for flexible multimodal generalist foundation models (MGFMs) that can generalize to novel tasks and adapt to previously unseen settings autonomously through exploration.

PhD position summary/title: 3 PhD positions in the AI-Steel project
PhD1: Will develop models that can read, extract and acquire knowledge from legacy data, coming both in the form of text and in the form of structured data (e.g. physical measurements) to predict characteristics of new steel grades. To this end we will design agentic multi-modal models, whose components will be trained on legacy data, and which can be queried to provide a prompt-based summarization of relevant legacy data, both in the form of text and quantitative predictions.
PhD2: Will develop models for inverse design of new steel grades. The methods will combine existing models for forward simulation with new methods for inverse design, i.e. identifying design parameters that achieve desired characteristics. In the later phases of the project, the specific goal will be to explicitly leverage predictions from information extraction models to navigate the design space.
PhD3: AI-guided Experimental Identification and Validation: This is an experimental PhD candidate who will work on making new materials of desired properties. The candidate will also study the structure of these new materials by different experimental techniques and also will verify model predictions as and when they are available.
