PhD position summary/title: Doctoral grant (Fund for Scientific Research-Flanders (FWO)) in family sociology

Population ageing has required European policy makers to gear towards a more central role of informal care in old adulthood, curbing the public expenditures on care service provisions. The presence of close relatives, such as spouses or close-living children, is known to postpone older persons’ uptake of professional care. This suggests that informal caregivers substitute, at least temporarily, for formal care alternatives. However, to date, there is limited research looking at the specific non-professional care arrangements that older persons can rely on before taking up professional care. In Europe, this is expected to depend upon the country of consideration, as the availability of public care services and cultural norms about who bears the care responsibility vary strongly. Moreover, professional and informal old age care are often combined, but there exists a lack of research on how informal care intensity evolves when taking up professional care. To address these gaps in knowledge, this project draws on the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe to pursue three aims: (1) to assess the process of informal care receiving in relation to the uptake of at-home professional old age care, (2) to examine the process of informal care receiving in relation to the entry into residential care and (3) to study how informal care receiving evolves when taking up professional old age care. All three objectives strongly focus on country differences and LTC policies.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral scholarship holders in political science

The two PhD positions are part of the DEMO-LIES project, “Deception in Democracy: Political Lying Accusations and Their Effects on Democratic Citizenship”, led by Prof. Dr. Maurits Meijers. Funded by a European Research Council Starting Grant, this five-year project (2025–2030) investigates how political elites use accusations of lying and disinformation, how citizens perceive such accusations, and what effects these dynamics have on democratic attitudes and behaviours.

DEMO-LIES addresses urgent questions about political communication and democratic integrity. It seeks to understand when and why political actors engage in disinformation accusations, how these accusations influence public perceptions, and what this means for democratic participation and trust. The project aims to generate insights that can strengthen democratic resilience in the face of manipulative political discourse.

The research employs a mixed-method approach. Elite discourse will be studied using advanced quantitative text analysis techniques, including natural language processing (NLP) and large language models (LLMs). To examine citizens’ responses, the project will combine qualitative focus groups, cross-sectional surveys, and survey experiments. This integrated design allows for a comprehensive analysis of both top-down (elite-driven) and bottom-up (citizen) dynamics of political disinformation.

(11) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral scholarship holder with a project focused on biomarker discovery in neurological disorders

Growing evidence suggests that allergic immune responses in the gut can influence the brain, but how these signals are transmitted and whether they contribute to brain disorders remains unclear. This project explores how food allergy during early life alters the gut microbiota, reprograms immune cells, and promotes their trafficking to the brain, ultimately triggering neuroinflammation. The PhD student will help uncover the molecular and cellular pathways linking the allergic gut to the inflamed brain, and how these pathways shape disease risk later in life.

The successful candidate will work closely with experts in food allergy, neuroimmunology, gut physiology, and computational biology to characterize immune cell responses, construct spatial maps of inflammation along the gut-brain axis, and identify immune-mediated drivers of brain dysfunction.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral scholarship holder in immunoparasitology and vaccine development

  • You will join a dynamic and interdisciplinary team working at the intersection of immunology, parasitology, and genetics, with a strong emphasis on vaccine development and natural transmission with insect vectors. The project focuses on human protozoan parasites Plasmodium and Leishmania that express pro-inflammatory factors, which hyperactivate the host immune system and hinder the establishment of long-term immunologic memory. Strategies such as immunoneutralization or genetic deletion of these parasitic factors have enhanced host immune memory and provided protection against severe disease and reinfection. Notably, host cells also produce pro-inflammatory factors during parasitic infection, further complicating the immune landscape. This research aims to dissect these interactions to inform the design of next-generation vaccines.
  • The successful candidate will work actively on preparing and defending a PhD thesis closely with international experts in parasitic diseases, inflammation, and public and private laboratories investigating vaccines for infectious diseases.

(17) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in the domain of Quantitative Computational Imaging (perfusion MRI)

We are seeking for a motivated and talented PhD student to develop model-based reconstruction methods for quantitative super-resolution perfusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Specifically, you will develop model-based image reconstruction methods for quantitative arterial spin labeling (ASL) MRI images. ASL is a promising, non-invasive perfusion magnetic resonance imaging technique for quantifying cerebral blood flow (CBF). Unfortunately, ASL suffers from an inherently low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and spatial resolution, undermining its potential. Increasing spatial resolution without significantly sacrificing SNR or scan time represents a critical challenge towards routine (pre)clinical use. In this PhD research, you will develop model-based super-resolution reconstruction methods for accelerated and quantitative high-resolution ASL MRI, thereby breaking the traditional SNR/resolution/scan-time trade-off. Alongside purely physics-based models, you will explore physics-informed deep learning approaches.

About University of Antwerp, Belgium –Official Website

The University of Antwerp (Dutch: Universiteit Antwerpen) is a major Belgian university located in the city of Antwerp. The official abbreviation is UAntwerp. The University of Antwerp has about 20,000 students, which makes it the third-largest university in Flanders. The University of Antwerp is characterised by its high standards in education, internationally competitive research and entrepreneurial approach. It was founded in 2003 after the merger of three smaller universities.

The university’s roots go back to Sint-Ignatius Handelshogeschool (Saint-Ignatius School for Higher Education in Commerce) founded by the Jesuits (Society of Jesus) in Antwerp in 1852. This was one of the first European business schools to offer formal university degrees. It later opened a Faculty of Literature and Philosophy (including Law) and a Faculty of Political and Social Sciences. It was renamed Universitaire Faculteiten Sint-Ignatius Antwerpen (UFSIA) in the 1960s when the Belgian government granted it university status. In the early 1970s UFSIA joined into a confederation with “Rijksuniversitair Centrum Antwerpen” (RUCA) and “Universitaire Instelling Antwerpen” (UIA), public institutions.
