(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Research Fellowship linked to the project “The Democracy of Silence”

The Democracy of Silence investigates silence as an integral dimension of democratic culture, challenging the assumption that participation must always be vocal or visible. The project explores how silence shapes democratic life, citizenship, and participation in both digital and offline contexts. We ask, how can we reimagine the democratic potentials of silence in a society that hinges on vocal ideals of citizenship? And, what kind of politics emerges when we embrace silence as a democratic value, rather than view it as a threat?

Our research group is interdisciplinary, bringing together expertise from media and communication, informatics, participatory design, musicology, cultural theory, theology, and beyond. As such, the project is inspired by and seeks to advance discussions in democratic theory (Habermas, 1996; Dahl, 1998), political philosophy (Vieira, 2020; Gray, 2021), aesthetics and cultural studies (Sontag, 1969; Blanchot, 1955; Yao, 2021), as well as recent work on digital societies and datafication (Bucher, 2020; Hesselberth & de Bloois, 2020). We welcome PhD projects from a wide range of disciplines, and media is understood here in its broadest sense, encompassing digital infrastructures, music/sound, AI, visuals, and more. The group’s work is organized through thematic collaboratories that address topics such as silent AI, embodied knowledge, political disaffection, the right to silence in contexts of free speech, and the design of information systems attentive to silence.

(06) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD fellowship in Criminology and/or Sociology of Law, Digitizing Sexual Violence

One PhD fellowship is available at the Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law to undertake research as part of the project Digitizing Sexual Violence: The role of technology in creating and regulating sexual harms. The project is funded by the Norwegian Research Council. The candidate will be able to work on cutting-edge research topics and get access to an international and interdisciplinary network of high expertise with possibilities of research stays abroad. The candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary project group where close collaboration across academic disciplines and scientific methods is expected.

Digitizing Sexual Violence takes as a starting point that new technologies, such as smart phones and social media platforms, have become vital to social connections; moreover, they have reshaped sexual violence in two distinct ways. First, technology is being increasingly incorporated into traditional forms of sexual violence, such as when perpetrators take pictures of their victims while assaulting them. Second, technology has contributed to the creation of new forms of sexual harm, such as image-based abuse and deepfake technology. The implications of these developments are twofold. First, the use of technologies as part of harmful sexual conduct offers new possibilities to investigate and prosecute sex crimes in general due to an increased amount of technological evidence. Second, the role of technology in both traditional sexual violence and new forms of sexual harm have instigated a need for legal regulations of these practices. The objective of Digitizing Sexual Violence is to conceptualize an emerging scientific field at the intersection of law and technology: the technologization of the legal processing of sexual violence and the criminalization of technology-facilitated sexual harms.

The study will focus on three changes organized in separate work packages. Changes in 1) legislation and case law regarding technology-facilitated sexual harms; 2) the investigation and prosecution of sexual violence; 3) peopleʼs knowledge, attitudes and conceptualizations of the use of law in relation to technology-facilitated sexual harms. The advertised position is part of work package 3. Applicants do not need to have prior in-depth knowledge of sexual violence but should have relevant methodological and theoretical expertise from the social sciences and an interest in the topic. Applicants should develop an independent research project within the framework outlined in this work package.

(07) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Research Fellow in Education focusing on Collaborative Learning

Applications are invited for a four-year position as PhD Research Fellow affiliated to the Department of Education, Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Oslo. The position will be connected to the research environment for studies in higher education and work, currently named HEDWORK. The area of research for the PhD is collaborative learning in higher education or work.

Collaboration in educational and work contexts holds immense potential for learning. Collaboration is generally seen as a meaningful form of activity, which often combines the learning of new knowledge and development of competences with problem solving, project-based work, or creative tasks in authentic contexts. Collaborative learning can take many forms; from short-term interactions during structured discussions, team-based simulation sessions or problem-solving tasks to long-term collaborative work on open-ended projects. Often, collaborative work or tasks are supported or mediated by digital tools, which partake into complex collaboration ecologies. The rise of intelligent technologies, such as generative AI tools, has placed the spotlight on new forms of collaboration, between human and non-human agents. There is an urgent need for research on how collaborative practices evolve with these powerful tools, and support learning in disciplinary or interdisciplinary contexts. In addition, the nature of the interaction between human and machine triggers new questions about the locus of agency and learning these emergent collaboration ecologies. Such examinations may require in-depth qualitative analyses but also mixed-methods approaches, possibly enabled by emerging AI-enhanced techniques.

The PhD project should overall contribute to a better understanding collaborative learning in higher education work context.  The candidate is expected to conduct empirical studies and analyses of rich datasets, and in particular, interaction data, with a focus on examination of collaborative learning processes and practices. The PhD position can be connected to ongoing projects with a focus on collaborative learning and practice (especially, TeamLearn or CORPUS), and make use of projects’ datasets. The project description is expected to elaborate on the research problem of the prospective PhD project, how it is embedded in the research literature and which theoretical perspectives as well as methodologies are considered. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact the listed contact persons for further information.

How to increase Brain Power – Secrets of Brain Unlocked

About The University of Oslo, Norway – Official Website

The University of Oslo, until 1939 named the Royal Frederick University is the oldest university in Norway, located in the Norwegian capital of Oslo. Until 1 January 2016 it was the largest Norwegian institution of higher education in terms of size, now surpassed only by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. The Academic Ranking of World Universities has ranked it the 58th best university in the world and the third best in the Nordic countries. In 2015, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings ranked it the 135th best university in the world and the seventh best in the Nordics. While in its 2016, Top 200 Rankings of European universities, the Times Higher Education listed the University of Oslo at 63rd, making it the highest ranked Norwegian university.

The university has approximately 27,700 students and employs around 6,000 people. Its faculties include (Lutheran) theology (with the Lutheran Church of Norway having been Norway’s state church since 1536), law, medicine, humanities, mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, dentistry, and education. The university’s original neoclassical campus is located in the centre of Oslo; it is currently occupied by the Faculty of Law. Most of the university’s other faculties are located at the newer Blindern campus in the suburban West End. The Faculty of Medicine is split between several university hospitals in the Oslo area. The university also includes some formally independent, affiliated institutes such as the Centre for International Climate and Environmental Research (CICERO), NKVTS and the Frisch Centre.

The university was founded in 1811 and was modeled after the University of Copenhagen and the recently established University of Berlin. It was originally named for King Frederick VI of Denmark and Norway, and received its current name in 1939. The university is informally also known as Universitetet (“the university”), having been the only university in Norway, until 1946 and was commonly termed “The Royal Frederick’s” (Det Kgl. Frederiks), before the name change.

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded in the university’s Atrium, from 1947 to 1989 and will be so again in 2020, making it the only university in the world to be involved in awarding a Nobel Prize. Since 2003, the Abel Prize is awarded in the Atrium. Five researchers affiliated with the university have been Nobel laureates.
