PhD position summary/title: PhD in Tribological properties of dispersed and multi-component food systems
The quality and sensory perception of foods is determined by the structure and physicochemical properties of the specific food structure. Simple sensory attributes can often be directly linked to rheological characteristics. However, for more complete attributes, also lubrication (frictional) aspects are important. These lubrication aspects are very much related to the properties of the continuous phase, the type of dispersed phase, and the interactions between the different ingredients. This specific project aims to understand the link between lubrication aspects and the structural organization of a variety of dispersed and multi-component systems, and gaining insights into the physical phenomenon driving lubrication, such as wetting behavior, adsorption properties, droplet stability, jamming events, etc. Parameters that will be systematically varied are particle size, hydrophobicity, shape, volume fraction, crystallization behavior, etc. The structural organization will be examined by a variety of techniques, including microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, rheology, etc.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Exploring the Impact of Green Infrastructure on Health and Biodiversity
Are you passionate about the potential of landscape design to improve public health and biodiversity? Would you like to contribute to emerging methodological developments for the implementation of green infrastructure integrating human and ecological well-being? Then you could be the ideal PhD candidate to join our team!
Peri-urban landscapes – the transitional zones where city and countryside meet – present unique opportunities and challenges. These zones can become “ecotones” – transitional areas between ecological communities where humans and wildlife must cohabit. Green infrastructure (GI) in these areas has been recognized for its potential to enhance quality of life for both humans and wildlife, but designing it involves complex trade-offs. Green spaces promote physical activity, mental restoration, and reduce heat stress for nearby populations, while providing wildlife with attractive habitats for foraging and breeding, which can, in turn, also be attractive to predators. Conversely, wildlife is less likely to make proper use of space where human presence is important. Therefore, there is still much to learn about how different GI designs affect specific health and biodiversity outcomes. Our research seeks to bridge this knowledge gap by using Agent-Based Modelling (ABM) to simulate and evaluate the impact of various green infrastructure design scenarios in peri-urban areas.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position: Sweet or sour – how the nectar microbiome shapes the pollinator community in brassicaceous plants
We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate in the field of insect-flower-microbe interactions who would like to unravel the effect of nectar microbes on flower visiting insects.
Pollination by insects is rewarded with floral nectar. However, as a nutrient-rich and well-protected environment, flower nectar also supports a diverse community of beneficial, commensal, and antagonistic microbes. These microorganisms influence the interaction between the plant and its pollinators, but also with nectar robbers and flower-feeding herbivores by altering the nutritional value and the chemical composition of the nectar. Despite the importance of pollination for seed production of many brassicaceous crops, little is known on the role of the nectar microbiome for plant fitness and seed set in these plants. Besides plant fitness, nectar microbes also impact pollinator health and thereby strongly influence the pollinator community beyond individual plant-pollinator interactions.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position Farmer Perceptions & Decision Making towards Functional AgroBiodiversity for Sustainable Pest Management
We are looking for an enthusiastic PhD researcher to conduct cutting-edge research at the interface of behavioral science, cultural geography, biodiversity and agriculture, combining behavioral, perceptual, socioeconomic, and systemic perspectives.
Agriculture is a key economic sector and important for food security. However, decline of biodiversity is a threat to agricultural practices (e.g. lack of pollinators), and at the same time agriculture contributes to this decline (e.g. by dominant monoculture production systems). It is therefore urgent to redesign and diversify agricultural practices in order to enhance biodiversity.
Functional agrobiodiversity (FAB) to support natural control of pests of arable crops may offer an alternative to conventional pest control. Although adoption of FAB practices has the potential to lead to lower use of pesticides in farming and can contribute to improved biodiversity in and around agricultural fields, the adoption of FAB (and with those alternative agricultural practices) is critically dependent on place specific on-farm decision making.

The position focuses on understanding how AI can support the development of an Allergen Early Warning System (EWS) for novel foods, ensuring high-quality and safe food products. The research will investigate how AI models can predict allergenic risks by analyzing diverse data sources related to food composition, processing, and consumer responses. The AI system developed will utilize advanced techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, and predictive modeling to detect potential allergens and provide early warnings, enhancing food safety and decision-making in novel food production.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position Area-based processes in Dutch rural regions
Would you like to know more about area-based processes and conduct thorough research on this together with social partners within a PhD trajectory? Then we are looking for you!
In recent years, area-based processes have been seen as a promising means of tackling problems in rural areas. Think of nitrogen, biodiversity crisis or achieving climate goals. As a result, a series of projects and processes have been started in the Netherlands, with more or less good results. The question arises as to what the critical success and failure factors in area processes are.
The role of trust, or the lack thereof, is seen as essential in many area processes. We therefore ask ourselves the question: What is the role of trust in the success or failure of area-based processes in rural areas? The aim of this project is to gain more overview and insight into this and to provide tools for initiators and participants of area processes. This project is a collaboration between Wageningen University, Stichting Stimuland and the Province of Overijssel.
