Summary/title: Postdoctoral Position in Energy Law
The current call is part of a novel collaboration between researchers in law and earth sciences at Uppsala University. The collaboration is intended to lead to the step-by-step establishment of a multi-disciplinary research environment that can provide competence relating to the influence of law and geopolitics on energy transition in Europe. The researchers are interested in balances between, on the one hand, geological, ecological, geographical, and technical preconditions and, on the other hand, legal, political and financial restrictions. The initial attention is aimed at a series of recent and upcoming EU regulations, such as the Chips Act, the Net Zero Industry Act, the Circular Economy Act and the Critical Raw Materials Act. These all relate to the pre-existing Battery Regulation. The current call focuses on the Critical Raw Materials Act. The act seeks to ensure that EU member states have access to a sustainable supply of critical raw materials and that way safeguard their economic resilience and strategic autonomy. The overall question to be addressed by the postdoctoral researcher is how this will influence battery research and production in Sweden and Europe? The project should entail descriptive analysis of the Critical Raw Materials Act with its relevant context and an elaborate study of its implementation that includes assessment of tensions between some short-term and long-term perspectives.

Summary/title: Postdoctoral position in Machine learning for battery timeseries data
This project aims to develop unsupervised machine learning methods for extracting dynamical models of battery degradation from multimodal timeseries data, with a focus on interpretability. The underlying data comprises high-frequency acoustic emission (AE) measurements, paired with electrochemical measurements, from operating batteries. Such data are known to contain valuable information about complex electro-chemo-mechanical processes—such as particle fracture, interfacial delamination, and gas evolution—but are challenging to analyze. The project aims to move beyond black-box prediction by learning low-dimensional latent representations that capture these underlying physical processes. Examples of possible methodological components include self-supervised temporal representation learning for large volumes of unlabeled AE/electrochemical time-series data, switching state-space models that describe transitions between degradation modes, and neural ODE-based latent dynamics that connect multimodal signals sampled at different rates. Together, these tools will form an integrated framework that both extracts mechanistic insight from complex battery time series and enables interpretable battery health diagnostics and prognostics.
The exact details of the research project will be decided in a dialogue between the postdoctoral researcher and the supervisors Jens Sjölund (machine learning) and Leiting Zhang (battery sensing). The expected outcome is methodology and modelling tools for interpretable and generalizable analysis of large-scale timeseries data, applied to advance the fundamental understanding of battery aging and enable new diagnostic capabilities for real-time battery monitoring.

Summary/title: Postdoctoral position for Solid-State Nanopore Single-Molecule Sensing
Ability to study protein dynamics real-time is crucial for understanding biological processes at the molecular level, providing insights into protein function, interactions, and conformational changes essential for biological research, drug discovery, and medical diagnostics. Single-molecule detection technologies (SMDTs) have revolutionised the field by offering exceptional sensitivity and precision, as they can track individual target molecules one at a time. Nanopore technology is one of the most important SMDTs to access the conformation and dynamics of biomolecules in a label-free manner.
In this project, we will develop a novel label-free SMDT that can synergistically detect both charge and conformation of biomolecules based on nanopore and nanowire field-effect transistor (nw-FET) technologies. It will enable the access to protein conformation-charge synergetic dynamics for molecular biology research and biomedical applications. This project involves both experimental development/measurement and theoretical modelling/investigation. Therefore, it requires the candidate to have a solid background in electronics, physics, and mathematics, as well as strong practical experimental skills of nanofabrication in clean-room environment.

About Uppsala University, Sweden –Official Website
Uppsala University is a research university in Uppsala, Sweden. Founded in 1477, it is the oldest university in Sweden and all of the Nordic countries still in operation. It has ranked among the world’s 100 best universities in several high-profile international rankings during recent years. The university uses “Gratiae veritas naturae” as its motto and embraces natural sciences.
The university rose to pronounced significance during the rise of Sweden as a great power at the end of the 16th century and was then given a relative financial stability with the large donation of King Gustavus Adolphus in the early 17th century. Uppsala also has an important historical place in Swedish national culture, identity and for the Swedish establishment: in historiography, literature, politics, and music. Many aspects of Swedish academic culture in general, such as the white student cap, originated in Uppsala. It shares some peculiarities, such as the student nation system, with Lund University and the University of Helsinki.
Uppsala belongs to the Coimbra Group of European universities and to the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities. The university has nine faculties distributed over three “disciplinary domains”. It has about 44,000 registered students and 2,300 doctoral students. It has a teaching staff of roughly 1,800 (part-time and full-time) out of a total of 6,900 employees. Twenty-eight per cent of the 716 professors at the university are women. Of its turnover of SEK 6.6 billion (approx. USD 775 million) in 2016, 29% was spent on education at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, while 70% was spent on research and research programs.
Architecturally, Uppsala University has traditionally had a strong presence in Fjärdingen, the neighbourhood around the cathedral on the western side of the River Fyris. Despite some more contemporary building developments further away from the centre, Uppsala’s historic centre continues to be dominated by the presence of the university.
