(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoctoral position in research project on party leader explanations for electoral defeat

The position is part of the project “Justifying Defeat: Party Leader Framing of Election Losses”, a 4.5-year project funded by The Independent Research Fund Denmark (6.2 million DKR). Shaping the story of the election outcomes is of key interest to party leaders and top candidates who want to maintain power. Such stories are also crucial to democracy, as questions about the legitimacy of an election may increase political polarization and lessen trust in democracy, as suggested by the run on the US Capitol in 2020. Yet, little is known about what strategies and explanations party leaders rely on when facing electoral defeat. Some leaders may seek to attribute responsibility to others, other leaders may want to call attention to aspects of the election where they were successful, while yet others may completely deny defeat.

In the project, we aim to explore how party leaders communicate to their partisans and the public at large when their party has experienced an electoral defeat. Specifically, the project focuses on what kind of explanations for the electoral result, the party leaders make use of, and what consequences the usage of various explanations have for party leader support and democracy.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: 2-yr postdoc on Vegetation-climate interactions under rising biosphere novelty

The main aim of this postdoc project is to assess the capacity of vegetation to maintain diversity and ecological functioning (resilience) and mitigate climate change (carbon pools and accumulation) under ongoing global change, notably climate change and biotic globalization. To address, this overarching, complex question several research approaches may be used in various combinations, e.g., statistical, and process-based plant diversity and vegetation modelling, remote sensing, meta-analyses, existing paleoecological data, and field-based work in ECONOVO’s study areas in Europe and South Africa. Key topics of interest include the role played by plant diversity, megafauna-linked trophic complexity, and geodiversity. We are open to hearing the candidate’s take on this and would like the postdoc to contribute ideas and concepts to the project and lead at least three high-quality papers in this research area. We also emphasize the importance of engaging fully in the center’s outreach and educational efforts, while also supporting and encouraging collaborative work with ECONOVO colleagues, including students. This collaboration involves sharing skills and contributing to problem-solving within the postdoc’s area of expertise.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in ultrastructural examination of autophagy in health and neurodegenerative diseases

Autophagy is a catabolic process highly conserved among eukaryotes, which is involved in the degradation of long-lived proteins, aberrant complexes and aggregates, dysfunctional and superfluous organelles, and intracellular pathogens. Structures targeted to destruction, including intracellular organelles, are sequestered by double-membrane vesicles called autophagosomes and delivered to lysosomes for turnover. The key actors of autophagy are the autophagy-related (ATG) proteins. Autophagy can be highly selective and target specific unwanted structures using the so-called selective autophagy receptors (SARs) and various adaptor proteins.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Cognitive Neuroscience

The successful applicant will join the Deep Cognitive Neuroscience (DCN) lab, led by Dan Bang, at CFIN. The DCN lab applies a multi-modal, cognitive neuroscience-based approach to understanding decision-making, learning and mental representations. The DNC lab combines behavioural experiments and computational modelling with electrochemical (dopamine, serotonin, noradrenaline) and electrophysiological (spiking activity, LFPs) recordings from deep brain structures in awake neurosurgical patients. In addition, the DCN lab uses functional neuroimaging (fMRI/MEG) and online data collection in healthy participants.

The successful applicant will take a leading role in the design and execution of studies using recordings in neurosurgical patients. This work will include the development of tasks that probe decision-making, learning and mental representations; liaison with neurosurgeons, neurologists and other clinical staff; data collection in the operating room, typically in the context of the surgical implantation of deep brain stimulating (DBS) electrodes for the treatment of movement disorders (e.g., Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor); analysis and modelling of data; and the preparation of publications, conference presentations and other research outputs. The nature of the work means that travel and flexibility with working hours may occasionally be required (e.g., early start on surgery days). The successful applicant may also be involved in studies in healthy participants using cognitive neuroscience-based approaches as well as the supervision of students.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in research project on international healthcare labor, Aarhus University

The position is part of the MORE project, which is part of King Frederik Center for Public Leadership. In the 5-year project funded by the Carlsberg Foundation (9.1 million DKK), we aim to understand recruitment, selection, and retention of international healthcare staff with a focus on the European labor market. There is an immense and increasing lack of healthcare staff, which threatens public health and is one of the most pressing policy problems in Western countries. Although studies highlight the benefits of increased labor mobility, the research-based knowledge about how to ensure a successful international labor market is limited. The project aims to contribute with solid scientific evidence about effective solutions to international recruitment, personnel selection as well as onboarding improvements to prevent turnover at the earliest stages. We initiate both qualitative studies, surveys to employers and experts, and at least three large-scale field experiments in collaboration with healthcare employers in Denmark.

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Two postdoctoral positions in research project on political polarization at Aarhus University

The position is part of the project “PEERPOL”. In the 4.5-year project funded by the Danish Research Council (6.19 million DKR), we will explore how political polarization emerges and spreads through peer-to-peer communication between citizens. Whereas much is already known about elite-level causes of polarization, the project will explore its emergence through communication and opinion formation in social networks between citizens. In addition, the project designs and tests interventions against citizen-level causes of polarization.

The project develops a theoretical framework for understanding when and why citizens contribute to affective and ideological polarization through selection into social networks, biased information sharing, and interactions with in- and outgroup members. Methodologically, the project mainly relies on survey, social media, and field or natural experimental data to employ causally credible evidence. Empirically, the project will mainly study polarization in Western Europe and the United States in cross-national and single-country studies.
