Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Sustainable Combustion
The postdoctoral fellowship position is a temporary position where the main goal is to qualify for work in senior academic positions. Carbon-free fuels, such as hydrogen, will play a key role in our future energy system. They serve as energy storage medium and can be produced from excess renewable energy or via carbon capture from natural gas. Large-scale power production from carbon-free fuels is, therefore, desirable, and gas turbines are a promising technology for this task. There are many challenges associated with the combustion of carbon-free fuels; in particular, the occurrence of undesirable dynamic phenomena must be prevented. The successful candidate will develop novel predictive modeling tools for this purpose in close collaboration with experimental and numerical project partners.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Novel Explainable Artificial Intelligence Methods for Multi-Hazard Mapping
Centre for Green Shift in the Built Environment (GREEN 2050) is a newly established center at NTNUs Faculty of Engineering. The center aims to be an arena of networking and collaboration between academia and the industry. A hub for accelerating existing, planned, and new projects. The goal is to transition into a carbon neutral built environment within 2050. GREEN 2050 will provide research of excellence and educate candidates with high digital- and sustainability competence ready to take on the green shift. Resilience pillar of the GREEN 2050 center examines challenging research problems related to the reduction of negative effects of climate change on the built environment. The main objective of the resilience pillar is to develop innovative solutions to mitigate the increasing risks from climate-driven natural hazards to the built environment. Natural hazards such as quick clay slides, debris flow, floods, and rockfall are a major societal risk causing fatalities, economic losses, and damages to the environment (e.g., Gjerdrum quick clay landslide). Climate change is expected to exacerbate some of the main drivers of natural hazards in most of the globe. Northern Europe, including Norway, is expected to be subjected to more intense and frequent rainfall events that result, among others, in more impactful landslide and flooding events. Current strategies for managing hazards are based on managing individual hazards without accounting for multiple, interdependent, and cascading hazards events (e.g., storm initiating erosion that undercuts a slope and triggers a landslide). This proposal aims to develop a novel approach for mapping interdependent, nonlinear, and cascading multi-hazard events based on eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI). The development of the approach will be demonstrated on a multi-hazard chain coupling meteorological, hydrological, and geological hazards that result in the initiation of quick clay slides due to erosion.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral fellow within Interfacial Mass Transfer in Turbulent Flows: The phase field method.
In this project, we aim to further develop interface resolved simulations of turbulent dispersed flow to also include the interface mass transfer phenomenon. The current in-house code considers turbulent channel flow of fluid particles that can deform, breakup and coalescence (i.e., the fluid particle size is larger than the Kolmogorov scale). The dispersed phase is modelled using the phase field method. The project bases on a close collaboration between NTNU (Prof. J. Solsvik) and TU Wien (Prof. A. Soldati) and will develop from simulation framework found in work such as, e.g., Mangani et al. (2022), Phyical Review Fluids 7, 053601: Influence of density and viscosity on deformation, breakage, and coalescence of bubbles in turbulence.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in the Area of Robustness in Predictive Systems
The position is connected to the project “RICO – Robust Intelligent Control”, funded by the Norwegian Research Council and in collaboration between NTNU, SINTEF, TrønderEnergi A/S, SolutionSeeker A/S and Ohmia Charging. The ambition of RICO is to develop new methods for improved robustness of intelligent control systems and predictive models. The successful candidate will be working with particular emphasis on robustness in predictive systems. There is a gap between the research on very advanced methods tested in a controllable and predictable environment and the industrial setting where the environment is neither completely known nor controllable and where information can be scarce, uncertain and of low quality. This gap can be closed by developing novel methods for robust intelligent control and forecasting to be tested in both controlled environments and in industrial systems, and this is exactly the aim of RICO. RICO will consider a variety of use-cases, and the work developed by the postdoctoral fellow candidate will be tested within these areas:

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Political Science
The postdoc is expected to conduct research at the intersection between political behaviour, political communication and European Union studies. EU institutions are acutely aware that their legitimacy is precarious. Many citizens are skeptical toward the EU and oppose membership. EU institutions therefore invest a lot of resources into communication. Through communicative authority exercise, they try to bolster the EU’s legitimacy in the eyes of its citizens. The EU sends out daily press releases, reports to specific sectoral stake holders, its officials travel to all member states to engage with citizens, and every major EU institution and official has their own social media accounts, to reach out to citizens directly. What is the effect of various forms of self-legitimation by the EU on citizen opinions?
