We are looking for a global mental health researcher interested in developing a psychological support program and evaluation for a partner organisation in Sri Lanka. This post will provide the opportunity to contribute to a global mental health study in Sri Lanka working with an established and experienced team. The post holder will contribute to the design and evaluation of a support program as well as identify new areas of research related to supporting the needs of staff in research. The work will involve some fieldwork and require the candidate to be able to spend a significant amount of time in Sri Lanka (up to 2 months). (02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc summary/title: Research Associate in Machine Learning: Planning and Reinforcement Learning for Long Horizons
Real world planning is a complex process that needs to account for many stages that might be needed to execute a plan, significant uncertainties in the states that result from actions in a plan, and diverse sources of knowledge that contribute information relevant for plan formulation. Plan’s are made and changed dynamically. Furthermore it is not usually possible to interact with the environment extensively enough to learn a value function associated with state-actions.
Most reinforcement learning (RL) systems break in these circumstances. Yet humans are very able to make such plans. This project will attempt to move to these more realistic planning scenarios, by integrating systemic knowledge encoded in knowledge graphs, large language models for re-representing and formulating that knowledge, and world-modelling through forecasting to understand the scenario options. This will then prove a model-based environment as well as surrogate reward functions. These can be used via RL-like methodology to enable us to learn appropriate planners for particular scenarios. We will look at trip planning and load allocation as two example applications.
This project is funded by Huawei UK is led by Amos Storkey along with Jeff Pan. The successful candidate will be based in the Informatics Forum, in central Edinburgh, and will work with colleagues in the Bayesian and Neural Systems Group and in collaboration with colleagues in Huawei Technologies Research & Development (UK) in Edinburgh.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Advanced Imaging Diagnostics Applied to Solid-Liquid Interfaces and Condensation Phase-Change
This Research Associate (RA) position will contribute to the research project with title Total Internal Reflection for Condensation Phase-Change TIR4CPC within the Institute for Multiscale Thermofluids at the University of Edinburgh, which is funded by the Office of Naval Research ONR and in collaboration with colleagues within the Institute for Multiscale Thermofluids at the University of Edinburgh.
The project focuses on exploring different bespoke imaging approaches, in particular making use of laser and optical techniques enabling unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution imaging of water and refrigerants direct interactions on solid surfaces at the solid-liquid interface at small scales during condensation phase-change. Sample Phase Detection high speed imaging, Total Internal Reflection, and/or Laser Induced Fluorescence coupled to optical microscopy will be applied to resolve the solid-liquid interactions at the micro-/nano-scale. In addition, Total Internal Reflection allows for the elucidation of the distance between the solid-gas and the liquid-gas interface of paramount importance during condensation and evaporation phase-change phenomena. Advanced techniques will be coupled with traditional shadowgraphy imaging and other surface characterisation techniques. These techniques will be applied to a variety of structured surfaces and functionalisation techniques. Findings will inform theoretical models of static and dynamic wetting, adhesion, friction, as well as phase change including both heat and mass transfer considerations of relevance to a wide range of applications including thermal management and/or refrigeration, microfluidics, biomedical, etc.
We are hiring a Research Associate with expertise in optical imaging techniques including laser diagnostics. Candidates with experience using the different relevant optical imaging techniques, combined with experimental fluid mechanics and phase-change will be considered. Strong candidates will exhibit the ability to learn new diagnostics and image processing methods and apply them to small scales. We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on a NERC-funded project on the interactions of host and microbiomes during population declines as seen through the lens of genomics. The post-holder’s main task is to conduct research on host-microbiome interactions during population declines by bioinformatically analysing host genomic and metagenomic data from museum specimens of several mammalian species. You will contribute to sampling of museum-preserved specimens of mammalian hosts and associated oral microbiomes (dental calculus) in natural history collections, and will have the opportunity to process in the samples in the ancient DNA lab. The applicant should have a PhD in population genomics, evolutionary genomics, metagenomics, or a related subject. The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated and proactive individual with strong skills in bioinformatics and experience working with low-quality genomics data. Expertise in ancient DNA analyses would also be useful. The applicant will complete high quality original research and will disseminate the data in refereed papers, conference presentations and seminars. The main task of the job is to coordinate and run the stakeholder engagement with future Atlas stakeholders partner institutions (see below) and to lead the co-design focus groups. The goal is to a) better understand the needs for communicating co-benefits data and b) to design respective visualisation and user interface designs for the atlas. The ideal candidate has experience in user-centered and co-design as well as visualization design, both through practice and an academic work. The UK Co-Benefits Atlas project is a new project by researchers from Design Informatics/VisHub lab, the School of Informatics, the University of St. Andrews and the Edinburgh Climate Change Institute.
Current research from the Edinburgh Climate Change Institute (ECCI), using a model developed for the UK Climate Change Committee (CCC), finds that for every 1£ spent on climate change mitigation in the UK there are as much as 14£ of social benefits in the form of improved public health, better urban connectivity, and increased productivity. Here, we ask the question, How can we communicate these findings to inform and accelerate climate action?
To address this question, this project we will co-create an interactive web-based data interface—the UK Co-Benefits Atlas (UKCBA). UKCBA will make co-benefits data and analyses more accessible, understandable, and useful for businesses, investors, researchers, third sector organisations and policymakers across Scotland and the wider UK. Compared to traditional static reports and research papers, visualization atlases are a novel and comprehensive means that provide interactive visualisations, in-depth analyses, and contextual explanations to explore data in a structured and accessible way; for examples, see https://vis-atlas.github.io].
The ECCI modelling team, which is part of our project core-team (Dr. Andrew Sudmant), provides 17 co-benefits for >1000 possible climate interventions in 57,000 UK ‘datazones’ (lower-layer super output areas, LSOAs) across the UK. This project will enable us to co-create an interactive visualization atlas with its future users and stakeholders; for this project we already have strong commitment from 9 Scottish partners across academia, business, and the public sector (see below), stating the need of such an atlas and which are highly invested in supporting the project through attending workshops and helping with its co-design. The result will be a collaboratively created, cutting-edge, and first-of-its-kind platform capable of facilitating interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral collaborations and decision making between diverse stakeholders around the complex socio-economic benefits of climate interventions.
The project envisions facilitation and co-design of an interactive web-based data interface, the UK Co-benefits Atlas, to visualise emission reduction co-benefits on, e.g., health, energy bills and other measures, across the entire UK [1]. Inspired by our previous analysis of visualization atlases [2], this project will co-design and deploy a first version of the atlas, informed by extensive engagement with future atlas stakeholders such as the Scottish Research Alliance for Energy Homes and Livelihoods, PWC Sustainability, and Department of Energy Security and Net Zero. By the open data and analyses published through our atlas, we aim to inform decision making by businesses seeking commercial net zero opportunities, communities and policy makers with net zero mandates, researchers and analysts examining the socio-economic co-benefits of net zero interventions.

The laboratory investigates fundamental mechanisms of the microtubule cytoskeleton in cell organization in different cell types, and in cell division and disease at the molecular and cellular level. In human cells, there are multiple a-tubulin isotypes and b-tubulin isotypes distributed in different cell types. Many pathogenic tubulin mutations are dominant negative and associated with tubulinopathies and cancer, yet the pathogenic mechanism is unclear.
The project will involve using cell biology and biochemical and structural approaches to 1) understand how the isotype-composition and properties of microtubule tracks control motor-cargo complexes and cellular architecture to modulate cell function and properties 2) discover the mechanism underlying pathogenic tubulin mutations.
We are now looking for an enthusiastic and talented researcher to join our team investigating the molecular diversity and function of tubulin isotypes and the mechanisms that underlie tubulin-isotype-specific diseases. You will play a major role in the design and conduct of the research project and be trained in the relevant techniques. You should have, or will shortly obtain, a PhD in a relevant subject area and will have experience in structural biology and biochemistry or/and advanced imaging and image analysis.
