(14) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate for the Project “Capitalizing on Cold Pool Observations (HErZ4 – OceanWeather)” as PhD student of the Hans-Ertel-Centre. § 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG
We offer an PhD position to illuminate the life cycle of cold pools over land in the mid latitude. We will capitalize on the pioneering observational campaigns FESST@HH and FESSTVaL (www.fesstval.de), providing the first spatial measurements of near-surface cold pool evolution using dense station networks. Taking these detailed observations as starting point, we will develop multivariate cold pool detection schemes that can also be applied to less dense operational networks. This broader perspective will allow us to study the full life cycle of cold pools. Own targeted experimental activities, in particular to observe the vertical structure of cold pools, will complement the observational data set. We will derive statistics, including controlling factors, to describe and explain key cold pool features like the speed of cold pool fronts, the strength of temperature and pressure gradient or the decay rate. These statistical relations will be used jointly with German Meteorological Service (DWD) to verify and optimize the cold pool representation in the ICON model at convection resolving resolution. We intend to render the density current of cold pools to a test-bed to optimize parametrization of land-surface exchange with a special focus on momentum transport. The successful candidate will strongly benefit from the vibrant research environment at Hamburg. The PhD student will join IMPRS or SICCS PhD school and will closely collaborate with the neighboring Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology and the German Climate Computing Center in terms of cold pool simulations. The project is part of OceanWeather project of the Hans-Ertel-Center for Weather Research (HErZ). HErZ funds six universities to pursue fundamental research on upcoming research topics of DWD. Intense collaboration with DWD and the university partners as well as access to DWD infrastructures ensures a stimulating, top-level research environment.
