Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in Biochemistry/Biophysics
We are looking for an outstanding postdoctoral research fellow to join our interdisciplinary team that is investigating how proteins aggregate into amyloid fibrils, including the link between disease-relevant mutations and post-translational modifications and fibril structure. Funded by Wellcome, you will use a wide range of biochemical and biophysical methods to map the early protein-protein interactions in amyloid formation and to discover new routes to prevent or control these interactions. In addition, you will create and characterise amyloid fibrils formed in vitro under different conditions and purify amyloid from patient samples and, working alongside members of the group with expertise in cryoEM, solve their structures in atomic detail, so as to better understand the origins of fibril polymorphism and its role in disease.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in Cell Biology/Biochemistry
We are looking for a research fellow to join our well-established interdisciplinary team that is investigating how proteins aggregate into amyloid fibrils and cause disease. This Royal Society-funded post-doctoral fellowship aims to determine the mechanisms of amyloid formation in vitro and its effect on cellular homoestasis. You will focus on a range of contrasting proteins, one involved in neurodegeneration (a-synuclein (aSyn) associated with Parkinson’s disease), a functional amyloid (CPEB/Orb2, involved in the formation and storage of long-term memories), and a protein involved in systemic amyloid disease (IAPP, associated with type II diabetes). Specifically, you will use biochemical approaches to modify the structures of the protein aggregates and determine their effect on cellular function, using primary cells, cell lines and relevant tissues. In addition, you will investigate how small molecule modulators of amyloid formation that we have recently discovered affect the cellular consequences of amyloid formation. The outcome will be a transformation in our understanding of how amyloid fibrils create or destroy memory, and new opportunities to target the dynamic interactome of amyloid fibril assemblies for human benefit.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in Machine Learning-enabled Optimisation of Cryogenic Machining Processes
Currently the dominant approach for cooling and lubricating machining processes, such as drilling, milling and turning, is to use emulsion-based coolants (otherwise known as metalworking fluids) at high flow rates. There are many serious environmental, financial and health and safety reasons for reducing industry’s reliance on emulsion coolants. These issues have motivated extensive research efforts to identify more sustainable machining processes. There is growing and compelling evidence from preliminary studies that cryogenic machining with supercritical CO2 (scCO2) with small amounts of lubricant (Minimum Quantity Lubrication, MQL, referred to as scCO2+MQL machining) can provide a high-performing and more sustainable alternative. Current knowledge gaps in the relationships between key input and output variables, the reasons for variations in performance and concerns over the release of CO2, are preventing a major uptake of this technology by UK manufacturers.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow/Co-Curator of AntibioticDB
Applications are invited for a highly-motivated researcher to act as Co-Curator of AntibioticDB, a freely-accessible online database that was established in 2017 to capture detailed information regarding chemical compounds that have (or may possess) potential for use in antibacterial chemotherapy. An underpinning aim of AntibioticDB is to offer a mechanism by which discontinued compounds (i.e. those that failed to reach the clinic) might be re-investigated and potentially ‘rehabilitated’ to deliver new drug candidates into the ailing antibacterial development pipeline. This is a tantalising yet realistic prospect – the field has witnessed a number of instances where antibacterial compounds were initially discarded, but which were subsequently revisited and developed into successful antibacterial drugs (e.g. daptomycin, fidaxomicin).

The research assistant will focus on the post-1259 manuscript of the Kirkstead Abbey Cartulary (BL Cotton Vesp. E. xviii). They will produce a diplomatic transcription of the whole manuscript. The research assistant will have also an opportunity to contribute to the wider aims of the project, in particular through investigation of the archival memory of Kirkstead Abbey and its relationship to the surrounding communities. The research assistant will also work closely with archaeologists in providing landscape-relevant information from the cartulary.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in Computational and Molecular Virology
Enteroviruses cause a range of diseases and emerging enteroviruses are of global concern. The applicant will be joining our NIH-funded research project to investigate the molecular mechanism of enterovirus (EV) VP0 cleavage. We will apply a combination of bioinformatic, structural and evolutionary approaches to clarify the molecular mechanism of EV maturation. This project will involve a combination of in silico, evolutionary, and structural approaches to determine the functional role of critical residues and capsid reorganisation in the cleavage event. Specifically, the successful candidate will generate a comprehensive EV sequence library and use existing and develop novel bioinformatic techniques to identify structural sites of pan-EV conservation. These findings will inform the generation of mutant EVs to interrogate the evolutionary, biochemical and structural basis of the viral maturation process.
