(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:   Researcher in volcanology and carbonation in sedimentary basins

The VISTA Centre for CO2 Storage in Volcanic-Sedimentary Systems (VICCO) is funded by VISTA and the MN Faculty at the University of Oslo, from 2025 to 2030. The Centre will target research that will further understand carbon capture and storage in a context of climate change, and the overarching goal of VICCO is to explore the potential for large-scale permanent CO2 storage in volcanic-sedimentary systems on the Norwegian continental shelf. The Centre will specifically investigate carbonate-forming reactions – the process by which CO2 is trapped in solid minerals– in igneous rocks. Such carbonation may enhance seal integrity in the storage medium and reduce reservoir leakage risks in mixed volcanic-sedimentary systems. Carbonation processes can ensure permanent storage of CO2 by reducing the risk of reservoir leakage in the volcanic-sedimentary systems beneath the seabed.

The VICCO Centre is cross-disciplinary between geosciences and physics, and is hosted by the Department for Geosciences. The Researcher position will be part of a dynamic and inspiring team of students and researchers, where CCS is one of several core research activities.

The available Researcher position will thematically be related to further understanding the geological conditions required to carbonate volcanic rocks, with an emphasis on volcanic stratigraphy in sedimentary sequences. The project will include detailed fieldwork, core studies, and large scale synthesis of carbonate formation in relevant lithologies. VICCO has a range of international collaborators who will be part of the working group around the position.

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Researcher in Theoretical Chemistry

Applicants are invited to apply for a 2 year position as a researcher in computational chemistry. The project will be lead by Hylleraas Centre PI Erik Tellgren and contribute to the Centre’s Research Theme 3/4. The focus is quantum chemical method development for one or both of the following areas:

Chemistry in strong magnetic fields: strong magnetic fields compete with Coulomb forces in molecular systems and lead to many exotic phenomena. Rearrangement of electronic energy spectra due to the orbital and spin-Zeeman effect result in novel types of chemical bonding. Moreover, the presence of velocity-dependent forces (Lorentz forces and Berry screening forces) result in complicated dynamics, and modified rovibrational spectra. The candidate will continue to develop the functionality of our in-house program package (London) and explore strong magnetic field chemistry.

Density functional theory: The presently best prospect for more accurate densityfunctional approximations for magnetic properties is via functionals of the kinetic energy density, the current density, and related quantities. Functionals will be developed within a framework that is not specific to magnetic properties, yet naturally incorporates the current density dependence necessary for rigorous modelling of magnetic properties in a unified manner. This will be done using a combination of mathematical analysis, physical modelling, and fitting/machine learning to reference data.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Researcher in experimental mineralogy and pore-scale CO2 mineralization

We are looking for an enthusiastic and skilled experimental scientist to join our team at the Njord Centre, University of Oslo
(https://www.mn.uio.no/njord/english/about/) for a 2-years Researcher position in the VICCO project funded recently as a VISTA Centre (https://vista.no/).
The aim of the VICCO project is to understand the potential for large-scale permanent CO2 storage through carbonate mineral forming reactions and how carbonatization may reduce the risk of reservoir leakage by improved seal integrity in mixed volcanic-sedimentary systems. VICCO will use a multidisciplinary approach to target complex volcanic-sedimentary systems with highly reactive mafic and ultramafic rocks, with the ultimate goal of finding scientific solutions towards a robust technology, which may enable gigatons of CO2 storage offshore Norway.

The main goal of this Researcher position will be to provide fundamental insight into CO2 mineralization potential in volcanic-sedimentary deposits at the pore scale. You will experimentally investigate in-situ carbonatization mechanisms at the nanometer to micrometer scales using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and surface force apparatus (SFA). The experiments will investigate mechanisms of
carbonate precipitation on isolated (AFM) surfaces and in confined pore spaces (SFA), both under no-flow and flow conditions. Your specific tasks as a Researcher, preferably with a background in experimental surface science and experimental mineralogy, will mainly include performing, analyzing, and interpreting AFM and SFA experiments on in-situ CO2 mineralization using mineral surfaces relevant for the volcanic-sedimentary deposits and selected in collaboration with other VICCO team members. You will also take part in designing the experimental setups and fabricating the appropriate surfaces for the experiments. Experiments will be supported by ex-situ analyses with SEM, Xray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy. The expected outcomes of this project will be to assess the reactivity and carbonate mineralization rate of the system, depending on the mineral and fluid composition. You will scrutinize the mechanisms of carbonate precipitation, identify its preferential sites, and estimate timescales for these reactions in volcanic-sedimentary reservoirs in
collaboration with other members of the VICCO project.

VICCO brings together a world-leading interdisciplinary and international scientific team at the University of Oslo, with decades of experience in volcanicsedimentary systems. We are dedicated to finding scientific solutions towards a robust technology, which may enable gigatons of CO2 storage offshore Norway.
You will be an active member of this team and you will closely interact with the VICCO team members on a daily basis.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Theoretical Physics

The successful applicant will join the research project “A truncated particle”, financed by the Research Council of Norway (2025-2029), at the Section for Theoretical Physics, Department of Physics. It is a project in fundamental physics at the intersection of quantum field theory, quantum optics, and quantum information, focusing on the effects of localized, causal interactions on particle states.

At the heart of this research project is the following question. What happens if you truncate a photon? If the leading tail of a single photon is removed using an optical shutter, what is the resulting state? This question, despite being banal at first sight, has not been asked before in the literature. The problem is not at all simple, as the localized effect of the shutter interacts nontrivially with the quantum vacuum and creates new photons. The answer must be complicated, and the treatment has several important applications in quantum field theory and quantum optics.

The candidate will consider this question, and more generally, locally equivalent states in quantum field theory. The candidate will work towards a framework for describing experiments (for example, scattering) where the information transfer is manifestly causal. In addition to fundamental, new understanding, the work is expected to have applications in quantum information science.

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Star-Planet Interactions: Atmospheric Escape Processes

The upper atmospheres of rocky (Earth-like) planets are influenced by two key energy sources originating from their host stars: (i) the stellar photon flux in the X-ray and XUV bands, which ionizes the upper atmosphere and drives atmospheric heating, altering conductance, and increasing atmospheric escape, and (ii) the interaction between the stellar wind and the exoplanet’s intrinsic magnetic field, which transfers energy to the atmosphere via field-aligned currents and Poynting flux, leading to atmospheric inflation and an enhanced atmospheric escape rate. This project will broadly focus on the processes that lead to atmospheric escape (in the solar system and beyond) and shed light on the role of planetary magnetic fields in the different escape mechanisms.

How to increase Brain Power – Secrets of Brain Unlocked

About The University of Oslo, Norway – Official Website

The University of Oslo, until 1939 named the Royal Frederick University is the oldest university in Norway, located in the Norwegian capital of Oslo. Until 1 January 2016 it was the largest Norwegian institution of higher education in terms of size, now surpassed only by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. The Academic Ranking of World Universities has ranked it the 58th best university in the world and the third best in the Nordic countries. In 2015, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings ranked it the 135th best university in the world and the seventh best in the Nordics. While in its 2016, Top 200 Rankings of European universities, the Times Higher Education listed the University of Oslo at 63rd, making it the highest ranked Norwegian university.

The university has approximately 27,700 students and employs around 6,000 people. Its faculties include (Lutheran) theology (with the Lutheran Church of Norway having been Norway’s state church since 1536), law, medicine, humanities, mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, dentistry, and education. The university’s original neoclassical campus is located in the centre of Oslo; it is currently occupied by the Faculty of Law. Most of the university’s other faculties are located at the newer Blindern campus in the suburban West End. The Faculty of Medicine is split between several university hospitals in the Oslo area. The university also includes some formally independent, affiliated institutes such as the Centre for International Climate and Environmental Research (CICERO), NKVTS and the Frisch Centre.

The university was founded in 1811 and was modeled after the University of Copenhagen and the recently established University of Berlin. It was originally named for King Frederick VI of Denmark and Norway, and received its current name in 1939. The university is informally also known as Universitetet (“the university”), having been the only university in Norway, until 1946 and was commonly termed “The Royal Frederick’s” (Det Kgl. Frederiks), before the name change.

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded in the university’s Atrium, from 1947 to 1989 and will be so again in 2020, making it the only university in the world to be involved in awarding a Nobel Prize. Since 2003, the Abel Prize is awarded in the Atrium. Five researchers affiliated with the university have been Nobel laureates.
