(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral Scholar: Quantifying and informing management of coastal squeeze

The University of Washington is seeking a full-time (100% FTE) postdoctoral research scholar to join the 2025-2027 Future of Species Range Shifts cohort as part of the Climate Adaptation Postdoctoral (CAP) Fellows Program, hosted by the U.S. Geological Survey Climate Adaptation Science Centers. The successful applicant will conduct research related to the impact of human and natural barriers on inland range shifts of coastal species and ecosystems in response to sea-level rise (i.e., coastal squeeze). They will also join eight other postdocs from around the country to conduct a national synthesis project related to species range shifts.

The successful candidate will be based at the UW School of Environmental and Forest Sciences and will work closely with partners at the Northwest Climate Adaptation Science Center, Oregon State University and a transdisciplinary team of scientists and coastal managers from Washington and Oregon. This position will be a 12-month appointment, with renewal for an additional 12 months based on performance for a total of two years. The preferred start is sometime in the summer of 2025.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Scholar – Imaging and Pain Research, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine

The University of Washington’s Department of Rehabilitation Medicine is seeking one Postdoctoral Scholar interested in imaging research. This position will be full-time and while this is designed to be a multi-year fellowship, the initial appointment will be for one year, with reappointment for a second year based on satisfactory progress in the first year. Reappointments may be possible up to 5 years total, inclusive of all postdoctoral experience at other institutions. Anticipated start date is February 1, 2025, but later dates may be considered.

This position will be co-mentored by Dr. Mark Jensen and Dr. Melissa Day, and work closely with a wider interdisciplinary team to work on a recently awarded NIA R01 clinical trial investigating fMRI and EEG assessed mechanisms of behavioural interventions for chronic pain in older adults. This research has been accompanied by a consistent presence of postdoctoral fellowships that have prepared multiple individuals for independent professional careers at academic positions within major academic institutions. The Theoretical Nuclear Physics Group (NTG) consists of three faculty members, S.R. Beane, A. Bulgac, and G.A. Miller, postdoctoral scholars and graduate students. Current NTG research interests include quantum many-body theory and effective field theory methods with applications in nuclear and atomic theory, nuclear reactions at high and low energies, and aspects of nuclear theory relevant for neutron star physics and multi-messenger astrophysics. Group members are also interested in aspects of quantum information science (QIS) and Machine Learning (ML) with applications in the physics of QCD and other fundamental systems. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Position in Extragalactic Astronomy

The Department of Astronomy at the University of Washington is seeking applications for a postdoctoral research position in high-redshift extragalactic astronomy. The successful candidate will join the research group led by Prof. Arianna Long, using multiwavelength observations to study the formation and evolution of massive galaxies in the early cosmos. Successful applicants may work on a variety of different projects and datasets, including data from the JWST COSMOS-Web Treasury Program, the ALMA 2mm Ex-MORA Program, and the CHAMPS 1mm Program. Candidates with expertise in JWST and/or ALMA image manipulation, spectral energy distribution fitting, hot/warm/cold dust in distant galaxies, and/or measuring spatially resolved galaxy properties are especially encouraged to apply, though consideration will be given to a wide range of specialties. (09) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Scholar in Coastal Flood Modeling

The University of Washington and the U.S. Geological Survey have initiated a cooperative agreement focused on increasing coastal resiliency amongst communities in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. We are seeking an enthusiastic Postdoctoral Scholar to participate in this convergent coastal hazards research project to evaluate compound flood hazards and climate adaptation solutions through modeling and field-based studies. The Postdoctoral Scholar in Coastal Flood Modeling will assist, under the direction of their mentors, with the following activities:

  1. Develop, calibrate, and refine high resolution coastal flood models for coastal communities and ecosystems, and use current and predicted future conditions to determine flood hazards for estuarine and open coast settings, in particular using the Coastal Storm Modeling System (CoSMoS: www.usgs.gov/cosmos). 
  2. Evaluate the probabilities and relative impacts of coastal, river, and compound flooding in selected communities under current and predicted future conditions. 

  3. Assess the efficacy of a range of coastal adaptation solutions (especially habitat restoration) to minimize the future risk of sea level rise on coastal communities.

  4. Develop visualizations of model output to communicate results to a diverse array of coastal stakeholders. 

  5. It is expected that this research will lead to one or more published peer reviewed journal articles that will be co-authored by the postdoctoral scholar and mentors. Other products are also expected as outcomes of this work (e.g., visualizations, presentations).

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Scholar – Statistical Modeling, NWFSC eDNA & Survey Data

Researchers at the University of Washington and collaborators at the NOAA Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC) in Seattle seek a post-doctoral researcher to help with the development and/or application of statistical methods for using environmental DNA (eDNA) data for quantitative conservation and fisheries applications.

The PIs have access to a large number of eDNA samples collected from nearshore open ocean habitats along the US west coast that are relevant to a wide range of both fish and marine mammal species and are seeking a researcher interested in using these samples to understand the distribution and abundance of marine resources.

Past research has focused on applying eDNA data to inform management-relevant questions. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Scholar – ATLAS and PIONEER (working with Q. Buat)

The Department of Physics at the University of Washington invites applications for a post-doctoral position. The successful candidate will work on the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and the PIONEER experiment in Prof. Quentin Buat’s group. The anticipated start is February 2025.

The University of Washington Experimental Particle Physics group (EPE) carries out a diverse physics program. We are interested in exploring electroweak symmetry breaking and the search for exotic decays of the Higgs, particularly with searches for Long Lived Particles. Prof Buat’s group leads searches and measurements with tau leptons in the electroweak sector and develop the reconstruction of hadronic decays of the tau lepton for the upcoming HL-LHC run. The successful candidate will be expected to lead a unique physics program at ATLAS and make significant contributions to the experiment.

Prof. Buat’s group is also developing the PIONEER experiment, a next generation rare pion decays spectrometer which aims to test flavor universality up to the PeV scale. PIONEER employs HEP detector technology (LGADs) and fast electronics. The successful candidate may also contribute to this effort, with potential opportunities from the experiment’s construction to operation and analysis of first data.

The Radionuclide Production and Molecular Radiotherapy Research Laboratories in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Washington (Seattle, WA) is seeking candidates for a full time Postdoctoral Scholar research position in radionuclide production for molecular radiotherapy. Our research group develops and evaluates radiochemistry methods that can be applied to produce and purify therapeutic and theranostic radionuclides, as well as development of radiolabeling reagents/chelators used for attaching radionuclides to biological targeting molecules, such as monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) for cancer therapy.  Preclinical research in astatine-211-labeled MAbs conducted by our group has been translated to the clinic and is presently being evaluated in multiple human trials. This position will assist in developing new cancer therapies, commit to laboratory safety, and work independently. The incumbent will learn about radiochemical methods and work with radionuclides in the development of production methods and new radiopharmaceuticals. Our research is a team effort, and the candidate will be required to participate in a number of aspects of the research as desired and needed.
