PhD position summary/title: Next-Generation CFD modelling of High-Pressure Turbine cooling
You will work within a vibrant, multi-disciplinary team in the Aerospace Research Centre within the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. There will be opportunities to engage with internationally leading academics and industrial partners such as Rolls-Royce.
Within aircraft jet engines, high-pressure turbine (HPT) blades are exposed to combustion gases. The continual trend of increasing turbine inlet temperatures leads to higher efficiency and lower emissions, yet gas temperatures far exceed metal melting points, requiring complex internal and external cooling strategies. Adequate performance prediction of HPT cooling design is thus critical, to ensure real-life performance and expected maintenance schedules are met. To predict true surface temperatures, heat transfer within both the blade material and the external gas stream must be modelled together. Within this ambitious project, next-generation Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solvers using Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) and associated numerical methods and AI, will be used with High Performance Computing (HPC) to improve understanding of key flow physics and inform future HPT design.

PhD position summary/title: Development of waste-derived adsorbents for CO2 capture from humid gas
Carbon (CO2) emission is the key contributor to climate change. The UK’s ambitious national plans to meet net-zero targets place the country at the forefront of research and engineering for the development of viable industrial technologies to cut carbon emissions across various industries. Therefore, removal/capture of CO2 from the air/emission points is vital to meet emission targets inter(nationally). Adsorption-based carbon capture is the 2nd-generation of carbon capture technologies to be significantly developed within this decade. However, there are current challenges with the industrial deployment of the technology, including the high cost of adsorbents, competitive adsorption of water from gas mixtures, and poor mechanical stability of adsorbents. This project aims to address the aforementioned challenges via the valorisation of suitable waste as the precursor to prepare cost-effective yet efficient adsorbents for CO2 capture from humid gas mixtures.

PhD position summary/title: Developing a Digital Twin for enhancing resilience of critical coastal infrastructure to compound, multi-hazard and cascading risks
Compound, multi-hazard, and cascading (CMC) risks present significant and escalating challenges for critical coastal infrastructure (CCI), such as ports, energy facilities, and transport networks, both in the UK and elsewhere in the world. CMC risks interact in complex, non-linear ways, triggering cascading failures and amplifying direct and indirect impacts across interconnected complex CCI systems, which are fundamental for societal well-being and smooth functioning of important sectors of a nation’s economy and the surrounding and supporting environment. Climate change and extreme weather events (e.g., flooding, heatwaves/drought, coastal erosion) coupled with rapid urbanisation and population growth, will exacerbate these risks.
This project aims to: i) develop a dynamic, data-driven Intelligent Digital Twin modelling platform that integrates real-time monitoring, predictive risk analytics, and scenario simulations; ii) assess the complex multi-hazard interactions and their cascading impacts on CCI networks, and iii) provide decision-support framework to optimise climate adaptation and coastal resilience planning and inform resource allocation and emergency (including infrastructure restoration) response strategies under uncertainty. The project will employ an interdisciplinary approach, combining concepts of flood and coastal engineering, climate change adaptation, infrastructure resilience and sustainability, multi-hazard risk assessment and management frameworks, and leveraging applications of emerging digital technologies (i.e., physics-informed Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence approaches) and big-geospatial-data analytics, modelling, visualisation capabilities.

PhD position summary/title: Investigating an AI-based framework for digital twins in manufacturing
A digital twin is a virtual model of a real-world object, system, or process that is connected to its real-world counterpart through a two-way flow of real-time data. A digital twin of a manufacturing process enables real-time control with possible cost savings and process improvements. There have been many developments in AI since digital twins first appeared on the scene. However, there is little evidence of these impacting digital twin practice, despite potential benefits. This research presents the opportunity to develop a framework to show how AI can advance the state-of-the-art of digital twins in manufacturing – there are many different possibilities in this research that are being pioneered by Brunel such as automatic factory design and model creation, machine learning to develop better statistical distributions, AI-based optimisation and experimentation, perpetual simulation, etc. This project will develop a framework and develop a small-scale demonstrator to show how aspects of an AI-based digital twin can benefit manufacturing. Metrics to evaluate this will also be developed and both artifacts will be evaluated in this and other manufacturing system settings. It is anticipated that this work will be conducted by a large manufacturer (e.g., the Ford Motor Company) and will offer a real-world setting in which a doctoral researcher can study and gain experience from industrial placements at the company.

PhD position summary/title: Regularity and Optimality Conditions for Equilibrium Constraint Programs
Optimisation models arise in almost every area of human activities such as in transport, manufacturing and economic planning. Frequently, in an increasingly complicated world constraints of an optimisation problem may involve variational inequalities and complementary conditions, and the underlying problem is called an equilibrium constrained problem or a mathematical program with equilibrium constraints (MPEC). MPEC models have received much attention due to their natural applications in practice. The aims of this project are to investigate regularity conditions and develop optimality criteria for a class of MPEC problems that may involve data uncertainties, and undertake selected applications such as financial derivative pricing evaluations using advanced modelling techniques.

PhD position summary/title: Developing net-zero power technologies for future marine application
The global shift towards decarbonization has positioned ammonia as a highly attractive green fuel for transportation, power generation, and marine applications. Its advantages include a mature production process, ease of storage, and high energy density (nearly twice that of liquid hydrogen). However, ammonia presents challenges due to its slow burning rate, low efficiency, and high ignition energy requirement. To overcome these limitations, a carbon-neutral fuel, methanol, will be used as an additive to improve the efficiency and emissions of carbon-free ammonia. More importantly, a hybrid system will be designed using digital twins to further ensure the optimum operation of the engine and the best utilisation of the power generated on a ship. The project proposed aims to develop a net-zero hybrid power solution for marine transport by integrating dual-fuel ammonia/methanol combustion with advanced energy management strategies.

PhD position summary/title: Enhancing CO2 injection well integrity with novel cements and predictive damage models
Storage of captured CO2 in deep subsurface reservoirs is being pursued to mitigate emissions from power plants and cement, steel and chemicals manufacture during the energy transition. The ability of these reservoirs to securely store CO2 depends on the well casing, cement sheath and cap rock providing an effective barrier to upward leakage. To ensure storage security, there is a need to better understand and improve wellbore performance, especially for cold CO2 injection.
Responding to this challenge, this project will explore the performance of novel cement formulations with optimisation of thermo-mechanical properties including strength, stiffness, thermal conductivity, thermal expansivity, and heat capacity. Self-expanding cements will also be studied with the aim of developing compressive prestress in the cement sheath after curing. Alongside the laboratory work, the research will develop and apply a coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) numerical model to simulate wellbore damage under a wide range of site conditions.

PhD position summary/title: Creative wellbeing for South Asian Muslim children and their families in Bradford: exploring the role of performing arts – ESRC Grand Union DTP CDA 2025
Performing arts such as dance and physical theatre can make significant contributions to wellbeing across the lifecourse, not only through movement, but through cognitive, social, aesthetic, artistic and creative mechanisms. South Asian Muslim families negotiate and overcome various socio-structural barriers to engage in performing arts, linked to marginalising aspects of their identity including gender, ethnicity, religion and/or deprivation. Cultural dance forms, and relatable leaders may provide ‘representations of the possible’ by challenging stereotypes and providing opportunities for enhancing wellbeing through the reaffirmation, development and sharing of cultural heritage in diverse societies. Despite this, research on developing culturally informed performing arts interventions and evaluating their wellbeing impact is limited. There is an urgent need for building knowledge about the role of arts and culture in promoting wellbeing amongst South Asian Muslim families.
