This PhD is part of the new Research England-funded Future Biodetection Technologies Hub and offers an exciting opportunity to contribute the advancement of chemical sensors for biodetection. The project aims to adapt and optimise the handheld Crim-Track sniffer sensor, currently able to detect vapours of illicit substances, to a new detection scenario by enabling fast detection of relevant chemicals in bioaerosols with parts per trillion (ppt) sensitivity and integration of the CRIM-TRACK technology with other advanced biodetection tools to facilitate the development of reliable and easy to operate biodetection units.

Extreme weather events are becoming more common in the UK. To combat growing economic and social cost of such events, we must consider all potential solutions including gardens. This PhD is designed to investigate a lighter, next generation alternative material to reduce the weight of unloaded stainless-steel disrupters and help improve control and stability performance of the same.
This project is designed to address a key business challenge for the Industrial Partner, Richmond Defence Systems, who have world-class expertise in the design / manufacture of products / solutions for counter IED and EOD applications.
It is anticipated that the PhD would be conducted via a unique, inter-linked and exciting combination of practical experiments and simulations involving scaled firings, use of compressed gas-guns to characterise materials, computational modelling, and microstructural analysis. The impact of pollutants not only depend on the emitted quantity but also on other factors such as the proximity to sources and the dispersion conditions. The automotive sector makes a significant contribution to local air pollution and exposes the population to dangerous levels of pollutants. To reduce pollutant emissions, the automotive sector focused on reducing fuel consumption by decreasing the vehicle drag. This approach reduced pollutant emissions generated by road vehicles. However, the levels of pollutant emissions need to be further reduced.

R2T2 is an integrated doctoral programme run across eight UK universities, which seeks to provide the opportunity to pursue a PhD in space propulsion technologies. PhD position summary/title: UK Digital Ecological Landscapes – PhD
This is an exciting PhD opportunity in collaboration with the Peak District National Park, the first in the established in 1951. This research aims to automate the production of high-resolution habitat maps for diversity monitoring across UK landscapes for the first time. Accurate, scale dependant, information on habit location and condition is essential for understanding species distribution and movement, and to effectively target resources for nature recovery. This is urgent as there is a significant loss of biodiversity within the UK, with a 60% decline in the abundance of UK priority species since 1970.
The project will investigate model architectures, such as Autoencoders, Transformers and Generative Adversarial Networks, for their ability to generalise to new landscapes and the effects of error and bias on landcover predictions at scale.
It is a fully funded NERC CENTA PhD Studentship for 3.5 years. Successful home-fees-eligible candidates will receive an annual stipend of £19,237 per year (pro rata part-time), plus full university fees and a research training support grant.
