PhD position summary/title: 2 PhD student positions AI-based maintenance planning for wind farms
The objective of IntelliWind is to train the next generation of multidisciplinary researchers who will develop
intelligent systems that support autonomous wind power plant operations. The IntelliWind Doctoral Network funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2023 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action (MSCA) consists of leading academic institutions and leading industry partners from 8 different countries (Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Portugal, France, and Switzerland).
We offer two PhD positions, funded for 3 three years by MSCA scholarships with competitive conditions.
PhD position 1 (DC9) is on Optimal maintenance decision processes with transfer learning. The project develops a data-driven framework to optimize maintenance actions directly from records of monitoring data and past maintenance activities at the wind farm level, leveraging recent developments in reinforcement learning in partially observable environments. The project will employ real-life data from wind farms. This PhD student will have secondments at Frauenhofer IWES (DE) and ETH Zürich (CH) with Prof. Eleni Chatzi.
PhD position 2 (DC11) is on Robust predictive maintenance planning under imperfect deterioration models: The project develops and investigates strategies for handling the sim2reality gap, i.e., the bias between state-of-the-art models and the real world. You will explore algorithms that apply self-learning and can correct biases as data becomes available and develop robust approaches to sequential decision-making under the sim2reality gap. This PhD student will have secondments at Ramboll (DK) and TU Delft (NL) with Prof. Dimitrios Zarouchas.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position (67% TV-L E13) for Ambient Pressure Scanning Tunneling Microscopy Investigations of Dynamic Catalysts
Size-dependent structural and electronic effects make sub-nm clusters extremely interesting for highly selective, mild, sustainable catalysis. We investigate model catalysts of clusters, produced with atomic size selection, in reactive gas environments using a sophisticated near-ambient pressure scanning tunneling microscope (NAP-STM). By recording videos, we can follow catalyst restructuring in situ upon heating, due to adsorbates, or dur-ing a reaction, obtaining unique insight into the elusive dynamics of a working catalysts. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) complements microscopy with information on the chemical composition and oxidation state of the system. These measurements are performed both at synchrotrons and with our on-site lab-based instrument.
As the successful candidate, you will prepare the samples, perform and analyze NAP-STM experiments and maintain the UHV apparatus. In addition, you will occasionally perform NAP-XPS experiments, both at synchro-trons (e.g. Lund, Barcelona, Berkeley) and on-site using a new lab-based system. You will benefit from mem-bership at the TUM Graduate School and an active international scientific network within the Cluster of Excel-lence e-conversion and a DFG Collaborative Research Center. You will participate in meetings with international collaborators, present your results at national and international conferences, and write publications for interna-tionally renowned journals.

PhD position summary/title: PhD (f/m/d) in Electrochemistry / Automation
We test novel catalysts for sustainable energy conversion processes such as polymer electrolyte fuel cells or electrolyzers, H2O2 production, or electrochemical CO2 reduction. To do so, the stability of newly developed catalysts is of pressing concern. You will continue our research line around stability assessment of novel catalysts by electrochemical flow cell measurements that will be coupled to on-line analytics (c.f. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41563-019-0555-5). Specifi-cally, an in-house designed flow cell is coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and the stability against dissolution will be assessed. The processes will be automated. This will be done with collaboration partners around the world. The workflow spans from analytical chemistry to material science and automation. There is no need for previous knowledge in the described fields but a strong motivation to learn and push the boundaries of our current knowledge further. We are looking for an individual with a high willingness to take initiative and motivation to start her/his career at TUM.

PhD position summary/title: PhD in Systems Biology
We are seeking applications for a PhD position in Systems Biology, with a focus on phage-bacteria and virome-microbiome interactions to join us at the Technical University of Munich and Helmholtz Center Munich.
Deng’s lab takes an integrated approach to study the interactions between virome, microbiome, and the human host. In contrast to the classical approaches commonly used in phage research, we are using single-cell technologies, multi-omics methods, culture-independent techniques, and machine learning to study phages and their interaction with the bacterial and human host for developing novel therapeutics. Ultimately, we are aiming to develop personalized phage-based treatments against infections by multi-resistant bacteria and for manipulating the human microbiome in dysbiosis associated diseases.
The successful candidate will explore the intricate interplay between viral and microbial communities and their impact on human health using advanced computational techniques. You will collaborate closely with wet lab scientists who will provide you with first-hand data. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in microbiome science, which has potential implications for therapy.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position at the Professorship for Global Health
This PhD position is offered within the EU-funded research project “Disentangling and Preventing Economic Violence against Women (ECOVI)”. Violence against women is a violation of fundamental human rights and substantially compromises women’s health, wellbeing, and empowerment. Globally, more than one in four women experience physical and/or sexual violence by a partner in their lives. However, existing research has so far neglected an important dimension of intimate partner violence (IPV): economic abuse. This form of abuse includes denying women the right to participate in financial decisions, taking away their income or preventing them from seeking employment. The consequences are profound – economic IPV compromises women’s economic welfare and independence, traps them in abusive relationships, and adversely affects their mental health. To tackle this major global health concern, ECOVI has three objectives: first, to establish the prevalence of different forms of economic IPV; second, to develop a theory of economic abuse by investigating drivers of economic IPV and linkages with other forms of IPV; and third, to design and test a community-based prevention approach. ECOVI will capitalise on a mixed-methods approach, including (i) systematic reviews and meta-analyses, (ii) conducting qualitative in-depth interviews and focus groups, and (iii) implementing a cluster randomised controlled trial and innovative survey experiments with husbands and wives in 150 communities across three states in India.
