We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will reside in the Materials Engineering Group in the Neutron Scattering Division (NSD), Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

This project will be focusing on the development of advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML) tools for the measurements of 3D tensorial strain in crystalline materials using neutrons at the Spallation Neutron Source VENUS beamline (https://neutrons.ornl.gov/venus). VENUS is nearing completion of its construction and will start commissioning in July 2024. One of the unique time-of-flight imaging capabilities enabled at VENUS is Bragg edge radiography. The measurement of the Bragg edge shift provides information of a lattice plane shift through a sample. This project aims at enabling the 3D reconstruction of the tensorial strain values in 3D using Bragg edge tomography.

Utilizing an advanced neutron imaging technique, neutron grating interferometry (nGI), to study nano-sized features in bulk materials at MARS (https://neutrons.ornl.gov/mars). By participating and contributing to this project, you will gain experience and knowledge in neutron imaging instrumentation and apply these in advancing nGI for material science research through novel instrumentation and computational methods. Then you will be applying nGI in addressing critical scientific questions in material science research. In this project, you will also have the opportunity to access other world class neutron scattering capabilities that would benefit this project and your own growth.

We are seeking a postdoctoral research associate who will study the dynamics of low-energy, high-charge ion beams. This project will use the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) Beam Test Facility, a front-end replica with advanced diagnostics. This position resides in the Accelerator Physics Group in the Accelerator Science and Technology Section, Research Accelerator Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

You will be part of a dynamic team working on multiple aspects of this problem. You will have a chance to learn about specialized diagnostics, particularly for high dynamic range and high dimensional measurement of particle beam distributions. This project is motivated by the limitation presented by uncontrolled beam loss to the performance of high-power accelerators such as the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). The goal of this work is to demonstrate predictive modeling of beam distributions in a realistic accelerator, and as such includes an emphasis on computation modeling.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate- Condensed Matter Theory

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will develop and apply computational methods based on electronic structure theory approaches, as well as artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques (AI/ML) with emphasis on electronic properties (charge and spin) of a range of materials important to the DOE mission, including the materials classes described below. The MEERA Group conducts techno-economic, value chain, trade, patent, and global analyses relevant to advanced energy and manufacturing technologies. MEERA is currently supporting a multi-laboratory DOE Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) project to develop an independent, objective, and publicly available geothermal well life cycle assessment analysis. This project will conduct research into alternative geothermal well designs that can improve the life cycle value of geothermal wells, reduce costs, improve productivity, and mitigate risks. The project builds upon previous MEERA work focusing on casing and cementing activities that identified the cost of casing, cement and cement additives, and annulus area as key variables in reducing total drilling cost. This project expands the analysis to other aspects of geothermal well development including well completion, production, and abandonment phases.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will reside in the Powder Diffraction Group in the Neutron Scattering Division (NSD), Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). NScD operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States’ highest flux reactor-based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world’s most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out more than 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will primarily support the Particle Fuel Forms (PFF) Group in the Nuclear Fuel Development (NFD) Section within the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division.

The PFF Group is a global leader in coated particle fuel research for advanced reactors (e.g., tristructural isotropic (TRISO) coated particle fuel) and emerging nuclear technologies (e.g., space nuclear propulsion). The PFF group supports activities related to both fabrication and post-irradiation examination of coated particle fuel and fuel forms. This position would support anisotropy and microstructural characterization of nuclear fuel materials to establish a link between nuclear fuel materials properties and performance. A focus will be on the use of novel ellipsometry techniques to characterize pyrocarbon and graphite-based materials. Analysis will be used to support larger irradiation efforts and interpretation of new fuel development. Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is a U.S. multiprogram science and technology national laboratory sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and administered, managed, and operated by UT–Battelle as a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC) under a contract with the DOE, located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Established in 1943, ORNL is the largest science and energy national laboratory in the Department of Energy system (by size) and third largest by annual budget. It is located in the Roane County section of Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Its scientific programs focus on materials, nuclear science, neutron science, energy, high-performance computing, systems biology and national security, sometimes in partnership with the state of Tennessee, universities and other industries.
