PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Catalytic Materials for Sustainable Chemical Manufacturing

In this project, you will design and synthesize new microporous oxyhydrides and zeotypes for catalytic valorization of carbon dioxide and biomass-derived furans into green commodity chemicals. You will use advanced methods to characterize your materials and to understand catalytic functions and mechanisms.

Oxyhydrides are an emerging class of materials that contain both oxygen and hydrogen anions in the same crystal lattice, giving them unique physicochemical properties that have not yet been explored for heterogeneous catalysis. As a starting point, you will address the challenge of synthesizing microporous, large surface area oxyhydrides for use as catalysts or catalyst supports, and from there expand your research into new directions.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in AI in Higher Education

Artificial intelligence (AI), and particularly the rapid advancement of generative AI technologies, is transforming higher education and reshaping how knowledge is created, shared, and assessed. These developments offer opportunities for pedagogical innovation, but they also raise fundamental questions about the relation between technology, learning and human agency.

The project will contribute to the growing field of Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education by examining the pedagogical, cognitive, social, and institutional implications of AI adoption in higher education. We particularly welcome projects that combine empirical rigor with a reflective or critical orientation. That is, projects that do not only explore what AI can do for learning, but also what its broader consequences are for learners, teachers, and institutions.

(05) PhD Positions – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Spatial morphology, focusing on Street-building interface

The project investigates the street–building interface and its impact on street liveliness and liveability. The street–building interface, comprising the physical and social threshold between private and public space, has been recognized as a critical factor shaping both street liveliness (for example pedestrian flows and social interaction) and urban liveability (for example perceived safety and sense of place).

However, most previous research has focused mainly on commercially active frontages, overlooking the diversity of interface conditions found in mixed-use, residential, and transitional contexts. This project aims to describe, map, and classify street–building interfaces beyond the concept of “active frontage.”

The work will employ 3D visualization, geospatial analysis, and statistical clustering methods to develop a typology of interface conditions. The doctoral student will also lead an empirical study assessing how different interface types affect street liveliness and liveability, including the collection and analysis of observational data on pedestrian activity, social behaviour, and perceptual qualities of the street environment.
