PhD position summary/title: Doctoral students in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics

The group of Egor Babaev at the Department of Physics of KTH Royal Institute of Technology has an opening for two Doctoral students in the field of theoretical condensed matter physics. The group carries a broad spectrum of research using analytical and numerical methods ranging from effective field theory, topological solitons, statistical mechanics of the phase transitions, topological systems to modern microscopic quantum many-body techniques.
One of our research topics is the emerging field of composite order: In a recent year, experimental
discoveries were made that revised half-century-old paradigms: the discovery of electron quadrupling condensate, and topological defects carrying an arbitrary fraction of magnetic flux quantum. The discovery opened up many fundamental questions on the nature of this new state of matter and its possible applications. Other topics include other new quantum symmetry-breaking and topologicallyordered states, unconventional phase transitions, and application of newly developed methods, such as Diagrammatic Monte-Carlo to understand the long-standing problems. Collaboration with local and international theoretical and experimental groups involved in the project is encouraged.

PhD position summary/title: Double degree PhD student in Chemistry with specialization in polymer electrolytes for batteries

Batteries are an important part of the global transition into a fossil free and sustainable society. Polymeric solid-state batteries, where energy storage and solid structure are combined, is an emerging research topic. This PhD project involves experimental studies of polymer electrolytes, primarily solid-state, for applications in Li-based batteries. Polymer synthesis, electrolyte fabrication, construction and testing of prototype battery cells are all parts of the project. The project also involves a number of materials characterization techniques (spectroscopy, structural characterization) and electrochemical characterization of both electrolytes and cells. The project is carried out within the centre Batteries Sweden, a collaborative effort combining Swedish universities and industry, and can therefore in part be carried out together with relevant industrial partners. Apart from the research project, which should result in a PhD thesis written by the candidate, the PhD studies also involves course work and possible teaching or other departmental duties to a limited degree (maximum 20%).

This present PhD project is carried out in close collaboration with Department of Chemistry – Ångström at Uppsala University. The project should result in a double degree PhD thesis, examined at both universities.  The period is divided between the two universities, with work during years 1 and 3 being carried out at one university and during years 2 and 4 at the other. The exact allocation between the universities is determined in consultation with the candidate offered the position.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Advanced characterisation/modelling of tungsten

Materials that can withstand extreme heat, pressure, and corrosion are essential for the energy, aerospace, and clean tech industries. Tungsten excels in all these areas, but its use is limited by its brittleness and very high melting point, which make it difficult to process with conventional methods. Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the ElectronsMatter network is addressing this challenge through electron beam powder bed fusion, a cutting-edge additive manufacturing technique. By combining modelling, process optimisation, and advanced materials characterisation, the project aims to produce crack-free tungsten components.

About KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden – Official Website

KTH Royal Institute of Technology, abbreviated KTH, is a public research university in Stockholm, Sweden. KTH conducts research and education within engineering and technology, and is Sweden’s largest technical university. Currently, KTH consists of five schools with four campuses in and around Stockholm.

KTH was established in 1827 as Teknologiska Institutet (Institute of Technology), and had its roots in Mekaniska skolan (School of Mechanics) that was established in 1798 in Stockholm. But the origin of KTH dates back to the predecessor to Mekaniska skolan, the Laboratorium Mechanicum, which was established in 1697 by Swedish scientist and innovator Christopher Polhem. Laboratorium Mechanicum combined education technology, a laboratory and an exhibition space for innovations. In 1877 KTH received its current name, Kungliga Tekniska högskolan (KTH Royal Institute of Technology). The King of Sweden Carl XVI Gustaf is the High Protector of KTH.
