(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher – Modelling Plant-Microbe Interactions

Plants constantly interact with the world around them—from light and water availability to the countless microbes inhabiting the soil. Our understanding of these dynamics is growing rapidly, and now is the moment to push the boundaries further. At Maastricht University, we aim to develop a computational framework that integrates plant development with microbial community dynamics. That’s why we’re looking for a postdoctoral researcher who brings curiosity, analytical strength and interdisciplinary fluency to this project.

In this role, you join the Plant Computational Biology group of Dr. Ruth Großeholz. Here, computational modelling, systems biology and plant physiology come together. You’ll be part of an ambitious research community where academic and industry partners work side by side. You thrive in a setting where ideas from different disciplines meet, and where integrating methods, perspectives and data sources is essential.

You will develop spatially explicit simulation tools, explore use-cases such as synthetic microbial communities, and collaborate on co-authored publications. You’ll share ideas, present work-in-progress in workshops and conferences, and contribute to the academic environment through teaching and supervision activities.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc: Multifunctional Biopolyester additive replacing PFAS and plastic in paper packaging

The project falls under the Biobased Circular theme of EKOO Part D3.2: Biobased Circular 3.2 Nieuwe generatie bouwstenen en biopolymeren. The project aims to create novel bio-based polyesters to replace fossil-based synthetic and harmful additives in food contact paper packaging. We aim to use fatty acid polyesters with various biobased diols/polyols (polysaccharides) to mimic the properties provided by polyacrylates, latex, PFAS, as paper additives. The envisioned additive is both biodegradable and recyclable, supporting closed-loop material use in packaging. For scalability, the applicant makes use of industrially available byproducts from agriculture (biomass), readily available in the Netherlands and Europe.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doc: chemical modification of starch

This post-doc position is part of the Interreg Flanders-the Netherlands project bioZet, where a consortium of academic and industrial partners work together. With the bioZet project, we join forces to create a sustainable alternative to traditional plastics. By valorizing sidestream potato starch – a residual product from the potato processing industry – we are taking an important step towards a green, circular and climate-neutral future. Our ambition goes beyond innovation: we develop biodegradable materials for a wide range of applications such as seed coatings, paper applications, packaging, rheological additives and biomedical 3D printing. At the same time, we are building new value chains that utilize local residual flows and strengthen cross-border cooperation. In this way, we contribute together to the realization of the European Green Deal – locally anchored, with European impact.

The task of Maastricht University is to do chemical modification of starch via green methods in order to prepare starch derivatives that are appropriate for specific applications like seed coatings, paper applications, packaging and rheological additives. The synthesis and characterization of the starch derivatives will be the core task of the post-doc. Samples will be exchanged with the industrial partners of the consortium for application testing, and new polymers will be developed based on the feedback of the application tests. Moreover, the post-doc will be involved in project management.
