(01) PhD Positions – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD in Governing African agrifood system transformations

Are you looking for a PhD position (4 years) in public administration and policy? Are you interested in how West African cocoa value chains can transform to be more sustainable and just? We are seeking a PhD candidate in public administration and policy who will combine their passion, skills and knowledge of sustainable cocoa value chains, bottom-up governance and critical methodologies.

Global agri-food systems are under increasing scrutiny for reproducing unsustainable and unjust outcomes. Despite decades of initiatives such as Fair Trade International and Rainforest Alliance certifications, evidence of transformative impact remains ambiguous. These schemes have often improved awareness but not necessarily altered the structural conditions underpinning environmental degradation, labor precarity, or the persistent poverty of peasant farmers. At the same time, the global political economy of agri-food is being reshaped by shifting trade alliances, geopolitical tensions, and evolving governance mechanisms. This conjuncture invites renewed theorization of how value chains might be governed differently to produce more sustainable and equitable futures.

PhD position summary/title: PhD in Modelling yeast metabolis and regulated cell death

Different yeast species play a vital role in industrial biotechnology for the sustainable production of a wide range of products, for example ethanol as a biofuel or protein ingredients for alternatives to animal-based products. However, also the lifespan of these yeast cells is finite, and their death negatively impacts processes: for example, with regards to process duration or product quality.

Therefore, we developed an approach that integrates the disciplines of fundamental cell and molecular biology, systems and synthetic biology with bioprocess and metabolic engineering to improve both our understanding of these cell death processes as well as the survival and performance of different yeast species in industrial bioprocesses.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position – Decoding One-Carbon Metabolism in Synthetic Acetogenic Cocultures

The project aims to elucidate how acetogenic bacteria, as well as defined cocultures of acetogens and chain-elongating partners, respond and adapt to dynamic syngas conditions. By combining steady-state cultivation, controlled perturbation experiments, and multi-omics analyses, you will unravel the metabolic mechanisms and microbial interactions that underpin robustness and resilience in syngas-fermenting systems.

You will work at the interface of microbial physiology, systems microbiology, and biotechnology, using chemostat-based cultivation and advanced analytical tools to link metabolic responses with physiological states. The insights gained will form the experimental foundation for metabolic modeling and bioengineering strategies developed in collaboration with international research partners.

This PhD position is part of the Novo Nordisk Foundation–funded interdisciplinary research program RECIPE (Towards Implementing Resilience: Identification and Mitigation of Chemical, Physical, and Biological Heterogeneity in Microbial Gas-Fermenting Bioreactors). The project is highly collaborative, offering opportunities to work closely with researchers at other leading European universities within the RECIPE consortium.

Deadline :  January 5, 2026

PhD position summary/title: Two PhD positions Functioning of intercropping systems -experimental & modelling

Position #1 – experimental
In this PhD study, you will evaluate and help optimize a highly diverse intercropping system. You will assess which combination of service crops and their management by robots can reduce the need for agricultural inputs, enhance biodiversity and diversity-mediated ecosystem services, while maintaining crop yields comparable to intensive agricultural systems. You will analyse the relation between different combinations of service crops and their effect on ecosystem services.  You will do this in part with a Danish counterpart by making use of large multi-year field experiments that will be running in both Wageningen and Copenhagen locations.

Position #2 – modelling
In this PhD study, you will work on improving our understanding of competition between cash and service crop plants in intercrop systems, and the underlying driving eco-physiological mechanisms. You will use 3D plant modelling (so-called functional-structural plant modelling) to address questions and generate hypotheses on the interactions between plants, soil, environment and management such as leaf pruning and root cutting. For this, you will consider both above- and belowground processes. For the modelling you will make use of data obtained in the experiments, and you will also play a minor role in acquiring that data.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position on reverse engineering Milk Fat Globules

As a PhD candidate, you will join a unique project aiming to deep-dive into the milk fat globule structure and the emerging properties at all scales. Your results will help to fundamentally understand the role of milk fat globules in the structure and taste of foods, and also assist in their replacement with healthy and sustainable plant-based counterparts.
