Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Synthetic Chemistry for Redox Flow Batteries
Organic redox flow batteries are a promising next-generation technology for large-scale, safe, and sustainable energy storage. Their performance relies critically on the ability to store electrons in robust, cost-effective, and highly soluble redox-active organic electrolyte molecules.
Our project aims to advance this field by developing new synthetic approaches to functional organic compounds suitable for use as electrolytes in flow battery systems. The overarching goal is to expand the accessible chemical space and identify structures with improved stability, performance, and scalability.
At ETH Zurich, this work is embedded in an interdisciplinary research environment spanning organic and inorganic synthesis, electrochemistry, and materials science, with the added dimension of collaboration with an industrial partner who will evaluate materials in device-relevant conditions.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow in aqueous chemistry and thermochemical modelling
The following project, where ETH Zurich plays a crucial role, significantly contributing to various research and development aspects of nuclear safely. The focus of the project is to gather essential data on the liquid source term, improve our understanding of the associated phenomena and develop tools to simulate the relevant processes. In collaboration with PSI, ETH reviews data from previous projects, focusing on leaching tests of Chornobyl’s lava in various liquids, and also contributes to reviewing data from Fukushima-related research projects, with a particular focus on thermodynamic data for caesium and strontium compounds.
ETH is also actively engaged in developing and validating new simulation models. This includes reviewing other simulation tools and databases, such as thermodynamic solvers, to enhance our understanding of liquid speciation and dissolution process. ETH contributes to summarizing knowledge on the use of the GEMS thermochemical solver and HERACLES thermodynamic database, specifically dedicated to nuclear applications. These efforts are integral to developing and integrating new models into severe accident (SA) codes, which include assessing and validating thermodynamic data to predict the behaviour of fission products like caesium and strontium in liquid phases during accidents.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher: Experimental Fracture Mechanics
At the Professorship of Solid Mechanics (SMEC) in the Institute for Building Materials at ETH Zurich, we aim to understand how materials deform, degrade, break, and ultimately fail. Our research is driven by curiosity about the physical mechanisms that underlie failure and by the ambition to translate this understanding into more reliable and resilient materials and structures. By combining numerical modeling, laboratory experiments, and theoretical analyses, we seek to link microscopic processes with the macroscopic behavior of both engineering and natural systems and develop predictive tools for mechanical failure.
Our team is highly interdisciplinary and international, bringing together researchers with backgrounds in materials science, mechanics, and applied physics. We work across a broad range of topics, including the mechanics of particle systems (colloidal and granular), architected and topologically interlocked materials, the mechanics of fragility in collagen, the mechanics of earthquakes, fracture of soft materials, and modeling failure in multiphysical processes such as corrosion-driven degradation of concrete. What unites these efforts is a shared curiosity about why complex materials fail and a commitment to developing new concepts, experiments, and models that advance our understanding of failure mechanics.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position – Developing novel ways to control viruses for the targeted infection of cellular systems
Viral vector-based gene therapies are extensively explored in preclinical and clinical development for the treatment of genetic diseases by infecting targeted cells. However, elaborating the target cell specificity of viral vectors, called as tropism, is an ongoing and crucial endeavor in the field of gene therapy. Viral infection is triggered when a virus binds to cell surface receptors with certain thermodynamic and kinetic on/off rates at equilibrium, which could act as a limiting factor to further enhance or optimize viral tropism. In this collaborative project, we explore new ways to adjust this equilibrium so the on/off rates of viral vectors brought in proximity to target cells / tissues / organoids can be controlled to promote viral infection. To reach this goal, we will apply multiparametric approaches to quantify the interaction (on/off rates) of a specific set of viruses with desired regions of cellular systems such as cultured cells, organoids, tissues, and organs. Then, it is thought to characterize the parameters that shift the thermodynamic and kinetic on/off rates and viral tropism. Ultimately, this quantitative approach will open new ways to engineer and control the on/off equilibrium of viral vectors rather than genetically engineering viral vectors by optimizing the transgene cassette or capsid. Finally, we anticipate that this study will open new possibilities to increase transduction efficiency and viral tropism for successful viral gene therapy.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Experimental Rheology of Eclogites
The Structural Geology and Tectonics Group led by Professor Whitney Behr welcomes applications for a 3-year Postdoctoral position on subduction interface experiments, deformation, and microstructures.
Eclogite is a dense, high-pressure metamorphic rock that can influence the strength of subduction interfaces and the deep lower crust, affecting plate coupling, slab pull, crustal foundering, and how stresses accumulate and release at depth. Field observations indicate that, under certain conditions, eclogite deforms by diffusion creep—a weak, grain-size-sensitive mechanism that can accelerate deformation, enhance fluid transport, and help localize strain. However, the strength of eclogite in this regime has never been quantified experimentally. This project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, will deliver the first high-pressure/high-temperature calibration of eclogite diffusion-creep behavior and directly validate it against natural samples from Norway’s Western Gneiss Region using field and microstructural observations. The postdoctoral researcher will lead flow-law experiments on a newly installed Griggs-type apparatus (≥3 GPa) in the Rock Physics and Mechanics Laboratory and contribute to complementary field sampling and microstructural comparisons in the Western Gneiss Region.
