(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Post-doc position in environmental law focus on marine environmental law

The discipline of environmental law encompasses those parts of the legal system (international, regional, and national) that aim to prevent environmental degradation, ,and pursue ecologically sustainable development in a broad sense. This includes, inter alia, protection of (parts of) ecosystems (ocean, water, air, land, species, biodiversity etc.), the production, use and disposal of chemicals, goods, waste management and transport, mitigation and adaption measures in the context of climate change, as well as a host of procedural and institutional issues that directly affect the effectiveness of environmental law. Further, the topic includes issues concerning the efficiency and adequacy of the legislation in relation to the purpose of environmental protection, including control, sanctions and instruments for voluntary action, the balancing between the need for environmental protection and competing interests, access to justice and the design of legal proceedings.

The post-doctoral position is situated within the project titled “Sustainable Carbon Capture Transportation and Storage: Liability and Governance in Light of International and EU Law.” It addresses the emerging practise of mitigating greenhouse gas emissions through innovative carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies. With a special focus on the sub-seabed storage of CO2, this project explores the legal frameworks and governance structures necessary to manage risks and long-term environmental liability of carbon storage in the sub-seabed. Identified risks include, for example, leakages during transportation and injection phases as well as migration and releases from sub-seabed geological formations, and risks associated with site closures and post-closure management.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctor in combinatorial optimization and/or theoretical computer science

The MIAO research group has a unique profile in that we are doing cutting-edge research both on the mathematical foundations of efficient computation and on state-of-the-art practical algorithms for real-world problems. This creates a very special environment, where we do not only conduct in-depth research on different theoretical and applied topics, but where different lines of research cross-fertilize each other and unexpected and exciting synergies often arise. Much of the activities of the group revolve around powerful algorithmic paradigms such as, e.g., Boolean satisfiability (SAT) solving, Gröbner basis computations, integer linear programming, and constraint programming. This leads to classical questions in computational complexity theory—though often with new, fascinating twists—but also involves work on devising clever algorithms that can exploit the power of such paradigms in practice.

Our most recent new line of research is on how to verify the correctness of state-of-the-art algorithms for combinatorial optimization. Such algorithms are often highly complex, and even mature commercial solvers are known to sometimes produce wrong results. Our work on designing a new generation of certifying combinatorial solvers, which output not only a solution but also a machine-verifiable mathematical proof that this solution is correct, has already led to several prestigious international awards, but many more exciting problems are still waiting to be solved!

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Migration Studies (2 years)

This postdoctoral position in migration studies is connected to the project “Faith-Based Refugee Relief in Europe: Connecting the Empirical and the Ethical (FABRIC)”, funded by a Starting Grant from the European Research Council.

FABRIC investigates the role of faith-based organisations in refugee relief across Europe. The aim is to understand the moral ideas and the moral insights that Jewish, Christian, and Muslim faith-based organisations develop when working with people on the move who have been forced to flee. FABRIC compares how faith-based organisations work both in mono- and in multi-religious settings. By studying their practical work, FABRIC aims to bridge the gap between empirical and ethical perspectives in research on forced migration. A central question is how faith-based organisations practice justice, i.e. what are the conditions, constraints and consequences of their work. FABRIC aims to conceptualise a new understanding of justice that considers cross-connections between social, racial, and climate justice on regional, national, and global scales.

(10) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral fellow in Eco-evolutionary shifts in bumblebee communities

Over the past century, climate and land-use transformations have significantly altered ecosystems, shifted species distributions toward higher latitudes and altitudes, and affected species’ phenology and morphology. This project investigates how bumblebee communities respond to climate warming and land-use change, focusing on shifts in body size and their implications for pollination services.

We aim to:

(i) analyse temporal and spatial shifts in body size among bumblebee species in Sweden, and assess whether these shifts are linked to species resilience to changing landscapes and climates,

(ii) determine the underlying mechanisms of body size changes – whether they are driven by genetic adaptation or phenotypic plasticity, and

(iii) evaluate farm landscape management strategies to sustain pollination services in light of changes in bumblebee community composition and body sizes.

The project will integrate data from historical bumblebee specimens housed in Swedish natural history museums with contemporary field sampling and advanced genomic techniques.

The research is funded by the BECC (Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in a Changing Climate) Incubator Grant “The role of bumblebee body size variation in resilience of populations and crop pollination to global changes” awarded to Prof. Bengt Hansson, Dr. Anna Persson, Dr. Romain Carrié and Dr. William Sidemo Holm at Lund University (LU) and Dr. Christine Bacon at University of Gothenburg (UGOT).
