PhD position summary/title: Development of origami-paper eDNA sensors for real-time surveillance of freshwater ecosystems – PhD

There is an urgent need for novel freshwater quality monitoring solutions to help mitigate the risks that contaminants pose to water security, human wellbeing, and biodiversity. This funded PhD studentship will work with conservation charities and citizen scientists to develop and validate innovative origami-paper eDNA sensors for the rapid detection of chemical and microbial contaminants in river water. 
 
The successful candidate will work collaboratively within a dynamic team, utilising cutting-edge technology to create low-cost and user-friendly sensors for deployment by citizen scientists. The project will involve co-designing the sensors with public stakeholders to ensure usability and accuracy, as well as conducting field tests to validate their effectiveness. Additionally, the research will explore the economic viability of these sensors to enhance real-time data collection and improve monitoring practices, and the social factors that influence their uptake.
 
This studentship offers a unique opportunity to engage in ground-breaking research with practical applications, promoting community involvement in detecting chemical and biological contaminants and monitoring biodiversity. (02) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Enabling space-based solar power: dynamics and control of large space structures PhD

This fully-funded PhD research opportunity, supported by EPRSC Doctoral Landscape Awards (DLA) and Cranfield offers a competitive bursary of £22,000 per annum, covering full tuition fees.  This PhD project will develop novel methods for modelling and controlling large space structures (LSSs), so that they can be reliably utilised in space-based solar power (SBSP) applications. Working with leading industrial SBSP experts, the candidate will explore the nonlinear structural dynamics of LSSs to fully understand the complexity of their control. They will use this foundation to explore idealised and realistic control laws to virtually “stiffen” highly flexible components and ensure their energy harvesting capabilities. Fully funded by the EPSRC Doctoral Landscape Award (including fees and £22,000 p/a stipend), this project will contribute to ambitious plans for SBSP as a vital part of the future Net Zero landscape.Applicants should have a first or second class UK honours degree or equivalent in a related discipline. This project would suit a candidate with a background in mechanical, control or aerospace engineering, physics, mathematics, or other relevant engineering/science degree. The ideal candidate would have experience with computational modelling and control of dynamical systems. Other useful skills include scientific programming (e.g., Python or Matlab), control system design, and uncertainty modelling.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Evaluating efficacy of supercritical water oxidation to valorise organic waste to achieve net zero targets and mitigate pollution PhD

This research addresses an emerging challenge of managing wet organic wastes, recovering resources and dealing with harmful contaminants such as PFAS, metals and microplastics.  Supercritical water oxidation [SCWO] of wet organic wastes is an emerging, low TRL technology which has demonstrated potential for effectively managing persistent pollutants, such as PFAS compounds and microplastics.

This PhD will aim to understand the mechanisms involved in the breakdown of wet organic wastes and contaminants during supercritical water oxidation.

Cranfield University has an international reputation in thermochemical conversion, including energy from waste utilising combustion, gasification and pyrolysis technologies.  Kairos Carbon has deep expertise in waste processing, carbon markets and technology development.  Cranfield and Kairos are working together on an Innovate UK-funded project to develop a pilot-scale SCWO reactor, presenting the PhD researcher the opportunity to work as part of a collaborative team seeking to demonstrate SCWO has a viable technology for treating wet wastes and recovering valuable resources.

PhD position summary/title: Extreme learning to handle ‘Big Data’ PhD

As aerospace platforms go through their service life, gradual performance degradations and unwarranted system failures can occur. There is certain physical information known a priori in such aerospace platform operations. The main research hypothesis to be tested in this research is that it should be possible to significantly improve the performance of extreme learning and assure safe and reliable maintenance operation by integrating this prior knowledge into the learning mechanism.

The integrating should enable to guarantee certain properties of the learned functions, while keep leveraging the strength of the data-driven modelling. Most of, if not all, the traditional statistical methods are not suitable for big data due to their certain characteristics: heterogeneity, statistical biases, noise accumulations, spurious correlation, and incidental endogeneity.  Therefore, big data demands new statistical thinking and methods. As data size increases, each feature and parameter also becomes highly correlated. Then, their relations get highly complicated too and hidden patterns of big data might not be possible to be captured by traditional modelling approaches.

PhD position summary/title: Phase changes in rapidly heated steel sections – PhD

The project will focus on steels (plain carbon, high carbon and HSLA) heated above their austenitising temperature under short, high-rate thermal cycles representative of industrial processing routes. The student will investigate how variations in induction-heating parameters, including frequency, current and heating rate influence phase transformations, alloying-element redistribution, and resulting microstructures. Advanced microstructural and compositional characterisation techniques will be used, alongside mechanical testing, to link processing conditions to material performance. Alternative methods of rapid heating such as additive manufacturing and flow forming will also be reviewed. Further to experimental work, the project may include computational simulations of heat transfer, diffusion, and phase transformation kinetics to support interpretation of results and enable process optimisation. The research will contribute to the development of more energy-efficient and predictable heat-treatment routes for steel components, supporting sustainable manufacturing and high-value production.
