PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Behavioural Decision-Making in Supply Chains
The empirical focus is on global supply chains—settings in which buyers are critically dependent on suppliers’ expertise, even when that expertise cannot be directly observed. The project addresses questions that are both theoretically rich and highly relevant for contemporary organizations.
You will work on a multi-method research programme combining behavioural experiments, simulation-based decision tasks, and physiological measurements. A key element of the project is the development of an interactive supply chain simulation game that serves as an experimental research platform (https://msgames.in/).
In addition, you will design and conduct controlled behavioural experiments—both online and in the laboratory—to investigate how individuals infer others’ knowledge under uncertainty, which cues they rely on, and when these inferences succeed or fail. The project is designed to generate research suitable for submission to leading journals in behavioural science domains, such as judgment and decision-making, as well as in supply chain-relevant fields.

Osteoarthritis is one of the most prevalent and disabling chronic conditions worldwide. No effective drug treatments currently exist due to the poor predictive power of small animal models. Ombion (https://site.ombion-cpbt.nl/) – a national initiative funded by the Nationaal Groeifonds (NGF) – is focused on replacing animal testing with innovative, human-based cell culture models that better predict therapy responsiveness. This Ombion project brings together top-tier academic institutions (Maastricht University, Maastricht University Medical Center+, Utrecht University, UMC Utrecht) and industry partners to revolutionize preclinical research in musculoskeletal disease.
Within Ombion our Osteoarthritis/Rheumatoid Arthritis Transition Project, led by Prof. Dr. Tim Welting, aims to develop validated human-based in vitro cell culture models in 2D and 3D (on chip technologies). These culture models will be developed in a manner that makes then compatible with different levels of musculoskeletal biomedical research: from high-throughput assays instrumental for drug discovery programs to advanced organoid-like models for disease modelling. This PhD student vacancy specifically relates to the work package, led by Dr. Marjolein Caron, in which various culture models and measurement methods will be developed focused on cartilage cells and tissues for the purpose of target identification, drug screenings, response-to-treatment, toxicity, patient stratification, and diagnostics. These models will be developed in 2D and 3D to simulate the different levels of biological complexity within the joint cartilage tissue. These new approach methodologies (NAMs) will be used to generate preclinical data that reduce the need for animal testing and may be adopted by regulatory agencies. The development of these models will be catalysed by the unique availability of a large collection of primary patient cartilage cells, cartilage cell lines and cartilage tissue present in our department.

This PhD student vacancy specifically relates to the work package, led by Dr. Guus van den Akker, in which high-throughput reporter assays will be developed to study relevant processes in joint tissues (cartilage, synovium, etc.).
Previously we developed reporter element and promoter reporter gene assays (PMID: 33446782, 35176481). These assays provide rapid cell biological information that we used to predict cartilage repair in vitro (PMID: 34039008) or discriminate different types of arthritis (PMID: 39558621). Within the Ombion project, the PhD student will critically contribute to innovations in reporter assays and implement them to a multitude of joint cell types (chondrocytes, synoviocytes, immune cells and neurons). Genetic engineering using CRISPR/Cas9 will be used for endogenous tagging of relevant proteins (PMID: 27920208). We will use these reporters that reveal basic molecular processes that drive osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis and will be used by other Ombion members. This will pave the way for equipping new approach methodologies (NAMs) with state-of-the-art biomolecular readout to advance the field of drug discovery, validation and differential diagnostics for the arthritis field.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Positions – Lipids and Cardiovascular Risk (LipidBRIGHT Doctoral Network)
Lipids are of vital importance through integration in cell membranes, as energy source and in cellular signaling and function. As such, they also play decisive roles in cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, cancer and chronic inflammatory disease. These diseases affect 33%, 60%, 10% and 33% of Europeans, and are responsible for >60% of global deaths.
The European Doctoral Network LipidBRIGHT combines scientists, clinicians, companies and stakeholder organisations with expertise in these disease fields. By integrating expertise in lipids from the clinical, biomedical, technological and data science field across disease borders and by transferring complementary knowledge and technology, LipidBRIGHT aims to speed up innovations towards improved disease prevention, diagnosis, prognosis and therapy.
LipidBRIGHT will train scientists in a close cooperation between academia, SMEs and industry partners. Key objectives are to provide: 1) Excellent scientific training on interdisciplinary level, covering lipid biochemistry and pathophysiology as well as clinical application; 2) Excellent complementary skills in personal and career development as well as business training required to extend beyond scientific research; and 3) Exposure to both academic and non- academic environments, required to build bridges between researchers and entrepreneurs and support the future translation of research findings in innovative products and services.
LipidBRIGHT builds on available patient cohorts, advanced technologies and established cooperations and strives to synergistically improve structural training on European level. LipidBRIGHT will nurture the development of young, broadly-trained scientists able to successfully bridge clinical with basic research as well as academia and industry, which is a cornerstone in effectively combatting complex diseases as cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, cancer and chronic inflammatory disease.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in MIP-Based Sensor Engineering for Antimicrobial Resistance Detection
As a PhD candidate, you will develop a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based sensor for detecting antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in pathogens that threaten human health. Acting as artificial antibodies, MIPs have molecule-specific binding sites formed during synthesis, enabling selective detection of antibiotics and other biomarkers.
Building on the department’s pioneering work, you will design, synthesize, and test MIPs, integrate them into a point-of-care (POC) device, and validate their performance on real-world AMR samples. The ultimate goal: a functional prototype that supports faster, more accessible diagnostics and helps limit the spread of drug-resistant infections.
This project is part of a multidisciplinary research initiative at the Sensor Engineering Department, supervised by Dr. Bart van Grinsven, Dr. Valerii Myndrul, and Kelly Erven. PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate – Genetically Triggered Aortic Aneurysm Modelling Using 3D Vascular Tissues
Patients with genetically triggered aortopathies can develop extensive aneurysms and dissections at a young age, often affecting entire families. The consequences are severe, yet the genetic correlation remains poorly understood. To address this, we aim to create 3D in vitro vascular models that help predict aneurysm progression and vulnerability. As our new PhD candidate, you will contribute directly to this effort by developing patient-specific induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived vascular tissues to assess disease severity, drug efficacy and the potential of gene-correction therapies.
You will work in a highly interdisciplinary setting, bringing together vascular biology, genetics, tissue engineering and clinical research. Given that health, mortality, income and wealth are correlated, measuring inequality in terms of the income and assets of the current population and ignoring differences in health and lifespans could be leading to misleading results if the primary objective is to capture differences in lifetime welfare.
