PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate in jazz and improvised music

The PhD project will consist of artistic projects and results, supported by reflection material in the form of text and other multimedia formats relevant to the project. The position will qualify for artistic work and artistic development work at a national and international level.

New jazz research (so-called “new jazz studies”), improvisation research and the field of artistic research in general, have in recent years raised the level of knowledge, understanding of practice and discourse in the field considerably. Based on the idea of improvisational practices as an aurally based “language”, we want the candidate to develop new approaches to, for example, tradition, repertoire, culture, education, technology and instrumentation.

The candidate should be at the forefront of knowledge within key practices, trends and discussions in the artistic field. After graduation, the candidate should also be able to develop, articulate and implement artistic projects of high complexity and professional relevance, as well as communicate their own work in a way that is able to create attention around the topics covered in the work. Through the doctoral education, the candidate should be able to identify relevant ethical issues and exercise their artistry with professional integrity.
