PhD position summary/title: PhD in environmental epidemiology: chemical contaminants and reproductive health

Humans are exposed to a wide range of chemicals in daily life through food, indoor and outdoor air, and consumer products used on the body, in the home, and in the workplace. Some of these chemicals—including plastic additives and PFAS—disrupt the normal function of hormones (i.e., endocrine-disrupting chemicals) and can cause reproductive health problems and perturb child development. Growing evidence links several classes of chemicals to accelerated or delayed puberty, disruptions in menstrual cycles, impaired fertility, early menopause, and multiple child and adolescent health outcomes. However, major knowledge gaps remain, including underlying causal mechanisms, sensitive windows of exposure, and factors that increase susceptibility. In addition, only a limited number of chemicals have been investigated from the broad set circulating in the body, with sparse data on chemical mixtures. 

Our research group investigates how chemical contaminants impact reproductive and developmental health in human populations. We focus on epidemiological analyses that strengthen causal inference, integrate mechanistic and biomarker-based data, and aim to generate evidence that is relevant for chemical risk assessment and regulatory decision-making. 

In this PhD project, you will work with Dutch cohort studies to combine chemical exposure measurements with rich data on reproductive, child and adolescent health, as well as potential mediators and effect modifiers. You will also investigate predictors of chemical body burdens and inequalities in chemical exposures.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position JUST PRODUCTION: ART & REGENERATIVE ENTREPRENEURSHIP

As one out of ten PhDs within the JUST ART consortium, and one of the two positions located at VU/HvA, the focus of this PhD will be on regenerative economies. 

A climate-just approach to the production of life sustaining goods is crucial for all societal groups. It must ensure that these essential goods are produced and distributed equitably and sustainably. This PhD position is intended to explore solutions for the challenges that entrepreneurs face when they want to produce life-sustaining goods in a regenerative manner. Regenerative practices require business models supported by an organizational design structure that focus on restoring nature and communities, creating products that do not deplete but enhance the earth and social systems.

You will thus work in co-creation with entrepreneurs to develop artistic and art-based approaches to address the many challenges entrepreneurs find on their path to regeneration. You will closely collaborate with entrepreneurs of the Network Regenerative Practices, hosted by the Centre for Economic Transformation at Amsterdam University op Applied Science (Hogeschool van Amsterdam/HvA). You will explore how more-than-human agents can become active co-creators in regenerative entrepreneuring. Examples for research areas are regenerative business models (how to create, deliver and capture multiple forms of value – economic, social, and environmental, human and non-human – in a regenerative context); entrepreneurship (sensing and seizing opportunities for regeneration, fostering innovation and resilience in their practices); fair economic ecosystems (analyzing and visualizing the life cycle of life-sustaining goods, with a focus on ensuring traceability, transparency, and accountability across the entire value chain). Candidates are encouraged to motivate which of these focus areas aligns best with their expertise and interests, and why. Please, feel free to add a research area that is not listed above.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position JUST PRODUCTION: ART & SOIL ECOLOGIES

As one out of ten PhDs within the JUST ART consortium, and one of the two positions located at VU, the focus of this PhD will be on soil ecologies. 

Soil is a life-sustaining system that serves both human and non-human life. It is a vital site of multispecies conviviality and a highly sophisticated regenerative system. Challenging the conception of the ground as a neutral or passive backdrop, artists and environmental humanities scholars emphasize the fragility of soil as an entity that suffers, remembers, and “retains responsibility” (Fiske 2020). Through nurturing land care practices, cultivating “soil attentiveness” (Puig de la Bellacasa 2015), and experimenting with legal frameworks to defend soil against pollution, artists have been positioning soil as a foundation for environmental justice since the 1960s at least. This Phd position is intended to reflect and build upon such theories and practices by developing artistic and art-based approaches that contribute to more just relationships to and through soil—on and through the ground.

PhD position summary/title: PhD high-resolution modelling of past warmer climates

We invite applicants for a 4-year PhD position in research project PAST, funded by the Dutch Research Council.

Project PAST, “A proxy-model alliance to decode storms in warmer climates”, aims to quantify the occurrence of storms over western Europe during warmer climates. Climate change is known to increase the risk to societies and ecosystems from extreme weather events. But these short-lived events are notoriously hard to reconstruct and to model, so our understanding of their behaviour during warmer climates is limited. To learn from past warmer climates and better understand the link between climate and extremes, we can use proxy-based climate reconstructions and climate models for past warmer climates. However, the temporal and spatial resolutions of these have so far been inadequate. 

PAST overcomes this obstacle, both from the side of proxy reconstructions and of climate modelling. It develops the first reconstructions of storms in the geological past using fossil shells. In parallel, it produces new, high-resolution computer models of the warm Last Interglacial period. Finally, PAST creates new knowledge by synthesising these two approaches through advanced statistics.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position – Laser cooling and trapping Helium molecules

We are looking for a motivated and interested PhD-student, with a degree in physics or chemistry and with experience in laser physics, spectroscopy, and/or optical technology, who wishes to work with us in the international and stimulating environment of the joint Quantum Metrology group at LaserLaB Amsterdam.

This project aims to create the first ultracold gas of a directly laser-cooled homonuclear molecule, the helium dimer He_2. Starting from a supersonic beam, novel laser slowing and cooling techniques will be employed to create a trapped dense gas of ultracold molecules. Choosing the He_2 molecule constitutes a paradigm change in the field of ultracold molecules, as it will constitute the lightest and simplest molecule ever laser-cooled. This provides a controllable, simple 4-electron system at record low temperature, allowing quantum sensing and precision measurements to test QED and to study the quantum nature of collisions with unprecedented accuracy – while being accessible to highly accurate ab initio computational methods.
